Snake Eyes - 13.35m

Oof. I don't think this would've done more than $25m in regular times so oh well.

Old - 16.5m

Honestly ok opening. Don't really see it having any staying power though, expecting total in the 40s.

55% drop for Black Widow, 69% drop for Space Jam. Awful.

bad, bad weekend.

Old opening is really not good given how likely bad its legs will be. I don't see it breaking 40m total.

Snake Eyes is one of the most pointless IP productions ever and deserves its failure. Henry Goluding is the British/Asian version of Armie Hammer (minus the cannibalism i hope).

The holdovers outside of F9 are all bad. Black Widow is not going to break 180m which means it won't be beating Ant Man. I honestly wonder if the film would have actually done well in normal times in 2020. It very likely would have easily fallen below 275m which would have shocked all of us.

Eh as the first MCU property since Far From Home (Wandavision wouldn’t have premiered yet), it likely would have opened to $125M. In a pretty weak May (F9, Scoob, Spiral, Spongebob, Artemis Fowl…) that should be more than good enough to get $300M.

If we’re thinking this way, the entire last summer could have been a disaster even without covid. We know WW84 had bad wom. We know Tenet was too confusing for many to even bother with. We know In the Heights had very little mainstream appeal. Soul would have needed to save the entire summer.

Also, Old’s gross is shit, yet still the highest an original film has opened since 1917…

i think we all were very worried about last summer pre COVID and rightfully so. It was a very open summer because there was no sure-fire mega-blockbuster. BW and WW84 had the biggest potential but neither were locks for 350m (and likely wouldn't have done it). The whole year had a very 2014 vibe to it (which was not a good year at the box office).

I think a big problem with the way things have gone this year is that we are trying to get audiences to come back to the theaters with a very mediocre crop of films. If COVID happen a year earlier, I think we'd see a way different reaction when the films that try to lure people back into theaters are Endgame, Lion King, TS4, Frozen 2, Spider-Man, etc.

Black Widow isn't gonna go pass 400m WW if China doesn't releae it or it does slim pickings there. Embarassing but hopefully this looks more like a loss to Disney if they didn't make enough from PA.

BW lack of success really doesn't mean much to Disney IMO. The film isn't important setting up anything really for Phase 4.

I think Shang-Chi and Eternals bombing would be way bigger deal cause they're all supposed to be new heroes that will be vital to the new stories moving forward.

Marvel is def. feeling some over exposure it seems. Disney+ isn't helping with this, either.

Shyamalan back to being panned and flopping

I guess his comeback only lasted The Visit/Split because Glass was a mess.

Shyamalan is an excellent director, but as a screenwriter he is hit or miss - he needs (screenwriting) help...

At the risk of sounding conspiracy theory-ish, didn't this supposed Delta variant come out of nowhere? Just when things were returning to normal...

Not really, Delta started its world tour in India some months ago, went to the UK and spreaded everywhere later...

Delta is having a miniscule effect on box office as of now. We'll see if breakthrough infections start killing people at a high rate, they currently are not

Forever Purge is having a good run. 3.5+ multiplier and not that bad a drop from the last film.

F9 late legs are decent. May not hit 2.5 multiplier/175m but it's run has been ok.

Aside from Friday Snake Eyes hasn't held on to #2 position. I feel BW's weekday numbers are stronger in comparison to weekend it wouldn't have reached $150m mark without those weekdays.

Viruses mutate, that's normal.

When they really fucked up was at the very start. If the whole world had acted like Australia and completely shut their borders, it could've been over quickly. But no, flights kept coming in worldwide and here we are.
