Director James Wan has just revealed that “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” will be the title for the upcoming sequel to his “Aquaman” movie. How do you think it will do?

Aquaman 2 vs Avatar 2 in Dec 2022

Two boxoffice behemoths with aquatic themes going head to head.

Would be insane if both opened in December. Maybe that's the time box office will feel normal lol

Not sure about opening but I expect a small dip from the original but I guess let's see how box office is next year.

If Avatar 2 releases on this date then Aquaman will move. As for its potential I believe it will do less domestically than the original but might do almost the same numbers in China if it does not have big competition against it.

EDIT: I meant less domestically

Agree that they'll move if faced with Avatar 2. I'm sure James Wan will be in no super rush to finish the film knowing the studio will move his release date anyway from Dec 2022 - April/May 2023.

Aquaman is trending. Reports are coming out that preview screenings were TERRIBLE with many people walking out. Mamoa is furious and doesn't want to play the role anymore.

No surprises here but going to be very hard to get the general population onside of this too with Amber Heard. She may not be the star but this may be lucky to make half what the original made.

Yeesh. Would really be something if this is like WW1984 and it just fails with general audiences.

They’re going to overhaul it completely before December like with Multiverse of Madness

Amber being in this is poison

Is it really worse than Ezra being the star of Flash? Ambers role is far smaller than his.

Even though what Ezra did is worse, Johnny Depp was so beloved by the general population that I feel like Heard got 10X more vitriol than Ezra ever would. They blame a lot of his moviegoing demise on her and the trial was also probably the most watched among the general population since OJ. It broke viewing records and went viral everyday.

There are people that won't see a project with any association with Heard imo.

I think Heard was the bigger story (most people wouldn't know who either are, but at least it's attached to Depp) and there is a misogyny factor. Miller's role being bigger though could cancel out some of it.

Forget it. Your draft is dead, dude. ;)

WB missed their earnings expectations after the market closed today so lets see how much they are willing to spend to fix this. Watch it become a 2023 tax write off if its unfixable. :P

The DC universe is cursed. Justice League bombing. Suicide Squad sequel and Birds of Prey stand-alone bombing, killing that branch of the franchise. Wonder Woman killing its franchise with the sequel. Aquaman 2 delayed for years and apparently is awful and might bomb. Amber Heard. Ezra Miller.

The only thing that seems to be working flawlessly is Joker but with the sequel being a musical maybe that will be a flop mess too.

It feels like we've been waiting forever for this sequel, and not in an anticipatory way like with Avatar: The Way of Water. It feels more like "ugh, get it over with already. Release it so future sequels can be cancelled!". To push back a film like this a whole year really shows what Warner Bros. thinks they have here. But they don't realise that the first movie doing over $330 million was a fluke like Wonder Woman doing over $400 million. Their sequels didn't/won't do the same. There just doesn't seem to be the desired buzz for these characters.

I don't think the first WW doing $400M was a fluke. It was a genuinely very well received movie by moviegoers and pulled a 4X multiplier in summer.

It definitely benefitted from The Mummy disappointing weekend 2, Transformers disappointing in weekend 4 but moviegoers all in all liked it.

Aquaman was more of a fluke but took full advantage of a pre Christmas OW.

Mary Poppins + Bumblebee were both under $25M OWs and Vice, The Mule, Holmes and Watson and Second Act all underwhelmed so pretty much Aquaman was the main film for the holidays in 2018.

Ironically, Spider-man: Into The Spider-verse opened the weekend earlier and Aquaman nearly doubled its OW. In 2023, I expect we could see a scenario of Spider-verse 2 outgrossing Aquaman 2.

If they can't replicate the success, it's a fluke by definition.

Aquaman just finished its THIRD round of reshoots. Interesting insights on how this has regularly been testing badly in test screenings too. They also went from having Keaton as Batman, then replacing him with Affleck with reshoots then deciding they don't want Batman in it at all.

If WB manages to turn this one around its 90% thanks to the holidays. :funny:

Another knee jerk reaction it seems. Probably removing Batman because of the Flash’s failure.

They may as-well just release this and get it over with!

The recent DC results, Amber, etc. make this as easy a bomb call as it gets.

The good thing for DC is this is the final clusterfuck project to just get rid of. Once it's out and they survive another round of ridicule, they can hopefully get on with more successful projects.

How in gods name did WB manage to screw this one up? Potential is there for this big a sizable hit though

I feel like Jason Mamoa's Fast villain character wasn't actually a character but him acting out his frustrations of the Aquaman sequel and DC universe. He enjoyed it far too much to be pure acting.

Not getting a trailer out in front of any of the summer releases is a pretty bad sign. I know they just wrapped even more reshoots this month, but they have NOTHING to show? No footage to put together even a simple "this film exists" teaser?

It originally finished filming almost 20 months ago now. The $205m budget was announced 8 months ago... surely that's ballooned up toward $250m or more now.
