So Pixar’s Coco opened in the Thanksgiving slot which is when Tangled in 2010, Frozen in 2013, The Good Dinosaur in 2015, and Moana in 2016 opened. Toy Story 2 also opened in that slot way back in 1999.

Coco opened to $50.8M OW for the FSS 3-day frame, and its 5-day frame including Wednesday and Thursday was $72.9M. Moana made $56.6M ($82.1M 5-day) and closed with $248.8M. However, Coco couldn’t quite get that high, but it made a solid $209.7M. It started off about $8-10M or so behind Moana and its 2nd and 3rd weekends were very similar to Moana, but soon it fell behind and never caught up. I’ve often heard some label its domestic performance as ‘underperforming’ (this may be because it is the 3rd lowest grossing Pixar film adjusted for inflation, despite being the best-reviewed since Toy Story 3 and Inside Out). On one hand, its gross was on the lower end of Pixar DOM grosses, but on the other hand, it still made them good enough money after Cars 3 was a theatrical flop in the summer of 2017.

So was Coco really an underperformer or were the predictions (A lot of people on BOT said $240-250M after the 2nd and 3rd weekends) too high after its 2nd and 3rd weekends which were roughly the same as Moana’s?

It suffered against Jumanji Star Wars and Greatest Showman.

The opening was about expected with less appealing marketing and subject material than Inside Out, the previous well received original.

Kind of. The marketing for this movie was pretty light, and while it had good legs one might expect more from Pixar’s best film. Still, for a children’s movie about death, $200M domestic is pretty decent.

I think it had great legs. You have to remember that this was second Pixar movie of the year which is still not a tried and tested release strategy specially when coming from yet another Cars sequel.

It also crossed $200m which is good enough for Pixar movie. Probably could have reached $250m but the competition that December was big which limited its legs.

It is the greatest Pixar movie ever so yes. I mean, the fact it made over $60mil in México , that's nearly 1/3rd) of its total in the us! That's just not meant to happen
