2021 Superhero box office discussion
Aka theater's last hope lol
So here's the upcoming schedule for 2021, let's discuss possibilities even though we have no idea how the fuck this year will play out. Honestly glad we got WW already, idk how it'd be if we waited another months only for reception to be... that.
Morbius - 3/19 (this seems like it's gonna move but idk) Black Widow- 5/7 Venom 2 - 6/25 Shang-Chi - 7/9 The Suicide Squad - 8/6 Eternals - 11/5 Spider-Man 3 - 12/17
Maybe by SM3 we will have sense of "normal" box office? We'll see.

Re: 2021 Superhero box office discussion
Fair or not, theaters will continue to face a stigma even with a widely distributed vaccine. Black Widow will likely top out around $60M and all the other Marvel movies will be pushed back to 2022. Morbius and Venom might stick it out since Sony doesn’t have their own streaming platform (maybe it will be on Playstation Plus?)

Re: 2021 Superhero box office discussion
60m total for Black Widow? Mmm I think unless a good majority of theaters close permanently (which is certainly a possibility) Black Widow should do considerably more than WW1984, and even with horrible legs that may get to $40m+ with a streaming release.

Re: 2021 Superhero box office discussion
Yep I agree. Black Widow AND MCU appeals to a lot more families which at this point will help it. It should be the first movie to do $100m domestic.

Re: 2021 Superhero box office discussion
BW open near 100, leg out to maybe 300ish, 900+ WW. Similar for Shang-Chi. Eternals if the reception is great can go for 400/1.1, and Spider-Man should be 450+/1.3+.
Morbius I really son’s know what to expect other than a delay. Venom 2 thinking a small drop, maybe 750ish. The Suicide Squad will be hurt by the first’s reception but if Gunn delivers another crowd pleaser as expected should have good legs. Maybe 250/600 if it doesn’t go Max, more like 150/350 if it does.

Even under current conditions both BW and Spidey 3 will easily surpass $100m. Not sure about the others.

Re: 2021 Superhero box office discussion
I just don’t see how you can say anything is locked for $100M. It could be even worse by May for all we know. It might be too late to reform the habit of rushing out for a movie. The vaccine could prove leas effective than we hope. I think $60M is reasonable and Disney will proudly boast they have the #1 movie since covid started before putting it on D+ in late June/early July.

We can never know as it depends on the situation but if conditions were the same as for when Tenet opened - I'd suspect a major Marvel film could at least double Tenet. Though you are right - it also depends on how soon they decide to release on D+

At this point I hope Disney sticks with their releases... if vaccines are still slow by March and we're still in this shit they'll probably do Premiere Access for Black Widow.

Re: 2021 Superhero box office discussion
Even when a sizable portion of the population gets vaccinated, social distancing regulations will probably remain in effect for a few months more. I'm of course assuming that widespread vaccinations mean very low new COVID cases. Ugh, it would suck if that wasn't the case (due to strains, misreporting, vaccine effectiveness).
I'm hoping Spiderman, by the time it is released will enjoy decent boxoffice numbers. With all this talk of a multiverse I think some of the MCU movies have to be released in a particular order. Not sure about that.

Re: 2021 Superhero box office discussion
I think even with Disney+ Black Widow will open with at least 75m.
The Suicide Squad would be nice if it would open close to F9 did but with HBO Max and the R rating I'm thinking opening will be like $40-50m.
Shang-Chi will open with at least $70m.

Re: 2021 Superhero box office discussion
Shang Chi has a good chance out-opening BW. I see it doing $80m-$100m OW. BW should be at $80m-$85m even with D+.
TSS will flop at $20m-$30m. This would have struggled even with a traditional release date
