Re: West Side Story - Spielberg, 2021
Reviews are stellar as expected. Think they will definitely drive interest in the film.
Hoping it can hit 20m OW.

In the Heights was way overrated by critics so I'm not sure I 100% trust yet

I still don't see this doing over 20m opening weekend but it'll probably play well through the month if it's as good as these reviews are suggesting.

But its going to get crushed on screen space front in its 2nd weekend. Spidey is taking away all good screen space for now. So it will see a steep drop during its 2nd weekend and then recover. I wish it released post Spidey than before it.

Re: West Side Story - Spielberg, 2021
I think opening the weekend before may be a good thing. If it opened on Christmas it would've gotten no premium screens but it's getting both Dolby and Imax opening weekend, and maybe WoM will make this be the big adult film for the holiday season. If it's total is below $60m with this release date then yeah, Christmas day maybe would've been better.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to watch it solely based on the reviews if there wasn't someone in the cast I like. But him coupled with reviews I'm sure I'll go opening week. Same I will probably go shortly after it's released

Re: West Side Story - Spielberg, 2021
Between Ansel Elgort rape accusations and Spielberg loudly telling the world the Spanish won't be subtitled, this has a lot of negative buzz. Wouldn't be surprised at a huge bomb. Also In the Heights showed that audiences aren't that into musicals with Latinos. Latinos themselves (speaking as one) are not into musicals at all.

Re: West Side Story - Spielberg, 2021
I haven't heard any "negative buzz". At worst I've heard "I don't care". My guess is the spanish sections are incredibly small percentage of the film and we'll be able to understand regardless.

Re: West Side Story - Spielberg, 2021
You're still able to understand what's going on in the Spanish scenes, it's usually a mix of Spanish followed by a line of English or something like that. But it does take place very often throughout the film and I could see it being off-putting to some, not going to lie.

Re: West Side Story - Spielberg, 2021
Told y’all this was a bomb. West Side Story is ancient and irrelevant in 2021, and the only people who were going to care, old white people, were already alienated by Spielberg going hyper woke. Their bid for Hispanic audiences failed because Latinos don’t like musicals and most Latinos in the US are Mexicans, who don’t identify with or very much like Puerto Ricans.
