$9.6m opening day for Godzilla!

No clue what this means for the weekend as it should be frontloaded, but the sellouts with limited seating may make it less so. Finally something to be excited about!

...and let's not forget, that's from 2,409 theaters - GvsK will add 655 theaters on Friday...

Very nice. I'll have to see if the Regals in the nearby region have opened this weekend so I can check it out.

^ Indeed. Who would have thought it would come from GvK of all the movies. I really hope studios take a chance and release a big blockbuster in theaters now. People are ready to go back to theaters.

So we can all agree that the backlash against WB decision was mostly because of Hollywood folks being pissy about potential royalities and not really about theatrical system right?

Cause between T&J and GvK, WB has single handily resurrected the theatrical system and has set us up for a fairly "return to normal" by July.

Top Gun is going to do insane numbers over July 4th.

i think we're going to see a lot of shuffling in the next few weeks now. The rest of the studios were scared bitches who let WB take all the risks for them the last few months. now they'll all come running.

I really hope that happens but unfortunately Disney is too greedy. Hopefully other studios will finally put a good schedule and let Disney die as theatrical studio.

Looks good to me, maybe close to great since some of the streaming releases have dropped rather hard initially. It's adding 600 or so theaters today, so maybe it can get up to/over $10 million for Friday. Normally that'd miss $30 million over the weekend, but probably can't rule it out given the unprecedented nature of the market right now.

$40 million, at least, over its first five days looks almost guaranteed. $50 million would be great, really great, but don't wanna get too greedy/raise expectations too high.

Also, hate the streaming thing even more now. It's almost impossible to not get spoiled if you're on the internet in any capacity, really, especially on social media. People posting images, actual clips or scenes, or full on reactions (uploading 10, 20, 30+ minute videos). What I'm assuming is the last battle is all over the place. Very annoying.

fantastic hold indicating no significant frontloading. Looking to do at least 45m 5-day if not maybe 50m.

Are people forgetting this is Easter Weekend? Whatever it makes Friday will probably only lead to barely over a 2 multiplier. I’d say it’s looking more for 37-42 5 day. Bright side is it should avoid a 55% drop next weekend like most pandemic openers.

based off Thursday releases, films with no heavy frontloading are usually flat on Saturday and drop 30% on Sunday. These are abnormal times so I guess we'll see but the film isn't showing significant frontloading.

HBO Max does seem to impact staying power, but that A Cinemascore is higher than the B+ from the other Monsterverse' and April's only wide releases are Voyagers, The Unholy and Mortal Kombat - which was just delayed a week to April 23rd.

Amazing hold for GvK. I do not think it will do much more than $40m 5-day but that is a BIG win at this point.

I'm happy for Godzilla vs. Kong. It's a fun, crowd-pleasing movie that does benefit from the theater experience in a way that even Wonder Woman 1984 didn't (and I thoroughly enjoyed that film). I saw it in theaters and hopefully it is a good reintroduction to others that do as well.

I love how everyone that bitched about the HBO deal is eating their own words.

Go GvK
