This is a difficult film to predict. It looks good, and I actually intend to see it, however at the same time it does not look like it will appeal to a wide audience.
I'm going to predict the following:
Weekend 1 (450+ theaters): $3.75 million ($8,300 per theater)
Weekend 2 (2000+ theaters)*: $12 million ($6,000 per theater)
*I'm not certain what the release format for this is. As far as know it is planned for a wide release on November 5th.

It won't have $8300 PTA the first weekend. It's only getting 1 screen and 4-5 shows per theater. There hasn't been enough buzz about it, and I believe it will gross less than 2M this weekend.

I'm curious, is the 450+ theaters the official release or more of a preview release?
I thought it was originally supposed to be receiving a wide release on November 5th?

Anyone else think this movie might hurt Kidman's career?

Im thinking the same thing to, Archie. Not only does Nicole look like a man in the movie, the subject is rather creepy and will bring bad controversy in the movie. No one would really want to see the movie since it borders on pedophile. The reviews its getting seems to border on rotten and I think the movie will garner a razzie nomination for Nicole. I can't see how this movie will do well at all

Yeah, there are a lot of controversy surrounding the film. It was booed at Venice Film Festival for the scene where Kidman and the boy were naked together in a bath tub. I think this will perform similarly to Meg Ryan's In the Cut, which was released in less than 1000 theaters around the same time last year.

Archie, no i dont think it will hurt Kidman';s career ny any means at all. I think it will do her good, shows she's an actress, and a good one at that
Ill say:
Opening: $14 Million
Total: $50 Million
Pretty all round legs really, nice enough opening, and a better than average finish for the opening weekend.

If Nicole Kidman looks like a man to you, I'd hate to imagine what your idea of a beautiful woman is!
This is an adult science fiction movie that addresses mature issues on the nature of love and relationships. It's not going to appeal to the fanboys because they are too close to separating from their own mothers as it is. But it will definitely appeal to adults who are mature enough to enjoy it's serious treatment of a underexplored theme.
I would guess it'll make close to $50million total - there aren't a lot of serious movies out until closer to Xmas, so it's got the market to itself for a while...

I was one of those.
I've changed my predictions, by the way:
Opening: $1.5 million
Total: $12 million

Should make more than $3 million, but not much more. With an opening weekend of only $1.75 million, its PTA was a decidedly low $3,300.

Nope, not really. This movie is too small to make a dent in her career. With hits like Cold Mountain, The Others and Moulin Rouge behind her belt and the oscar for the highly acclaimed The Hours, she should remain one of Hollywood's leading ladies for a long while.
As for Birth, well, I was pretty close with my $1.8 million prediction. It should cross $4-5 million eventually. As I said before, this movie has "The Human Stain" written all over it.

It certainly will be one of the lower grossing films in her career, but I agree it shouldn't hurt her career.

Well, it will definitely not make less than Birthday Girl and that even opened in over 1000 theatres.
