Bizarre, seems really good and would indicate a weekend around Fallen Kingdom

Wow. I was kinda expecting a disaster. If this manages Fallen Kingdom #s kudos to the franchise.

Re: JW3 Weekend - Thursday previews
it will end up with worse IM than FK considering lot earlier start and we are into June when folks can go on a thursday. Walkups also indicated that. Its WOM is questionable. 79% verified rating at RT is lowest among blockbusters. I am thinking 140-150m range for OW. But let us see how friday goes.

Re: JW3 Weekend - Thursday previews
A big opening at least near $150m shouldn't be that surprising. It's still a big summer blockbuster in one of the most well-known franchises ever. And even if it lost a decent amount of Fallen Kingdom's audience, inflation will largely make up for that. I think O said it could lose 1/3 and still earn as much.
And the market is pretty dead. Yes, there's Top Gun, but I don't think there's much overlap there. And even if there was, there's still plenty of space for both to thrive right now.
Lastly, reviews were still over 80% as of Wednesday (I saw it at 88%), so anyone who checked at this time or earlier would have seen that number before all the negative reviews came rolling in. Doubt many casual moviegoers/families who check reviews would go back and recheck. Also, the marketing was pretty outstanding, if only in terms of exposure. It had so many partnerships (beginning with the Winter Olympics), most TV channels were running spots for it, and most store aisles had some sort of promoted merchandise/groceries, etc.

Re: JW3 Weekend - Thursday previews
The Jurassic Park franchise has held the OW record for 3 out of its last 5 movies. Like Batman, there will always be people that show up and there isn't much else to see over the next 4 weeks. Only 2 non-family films for a month leaves this a lot of room so it will take full advantage of the empty marketplace.
As much as they were well received, my feeling is TGM potentially doing $700M, Spider-man doing $800M+, we're clearly starting to see the effects of inflation here very pronounced. Since inflation overall is at a 40 year high with things like gas prices up 50%+ year over year we're not paying as much attention when movie ticket prices have gone up 32% over 4 years.
I expect we'll next see this with movies like Minions which have 7 years of inflation and could very well do $300M+ again.

Movie ticket price inflation is barely any since before the pandemic

Go dinosaurs!
I believe this will be the first $150M opener to have a meta score below 40 though? Revenge of the Fallen and Age of Extinction are the only other triple digits I can think of.

Re: JW3 Weekend - Thursday previews
Deadline is saying 55.5m friday for JWD(including previews) and 14m for TGM. I think both of them will go up a bit. JWD closer to 60m and TGM 15m+.

Looks to me like $59.5m+ for JW3 (scratching $60m not being ruled out) and $14.25m for TGM...

Re: JW3 Weekend - Friday
Jurassic # is decent. I was expecting a disappointment, maybe if they didn't bring in the original cast it would've done worse. Too bad the movie is pretty eh.
Top Gun's run is so crazy still.

Re: JW3 Weekend - Friday
TG looks like it will just eek out $50M in its third weekend. Still amazing off of a $127M OW to have that level of hold but clearly got hit by loss of premium screens. Also, given how much it's making, it LOST 500 theaters? It's per theater average dropped 37% but I guess some theaters only have 1 screen or have exclusives and fully went to Jurassic Park? It should stabilize and I would not be shocked by a weekend bump on July long weekend 3 weeks from now. I'm seeing a $600M finish now given the completely light market for a month and expected July bump.
Sonic dropped 58% this weekend so looks like $200M is fully out the window. $193-194M is still amazing and it's the top video game movie of all time (until Mario comes out)!
Everything dropped 37%. Looks like it will finish at $70M but what a run!
Bad Guys is holding well but can it get to $100M with an expected wave of Lightyear next weekend? Will be close.
Jurassic Park is a funny franchise of box office grosses. It's yoyo'ed from having too high or too low expectations and breaking the OW record 3/6 times.

Re: JW3 Weekend - Friday
Deadline is reporting that the core fanbase of Jurassic films is getting older. For Fallen Kingdom 56% of viewers were 25 years or younger. But it was only 41% for Dominion (so far). The caveat is for Top Gun, it attracted a lot of viewers 35 years or older in its first weekend. More younger viewers showed up for Top Gun's second weekend. So nostalgia for the original cast definitely helped Jurassic World Dominion.

Re: JW3 Weekend
Looks like six drive-ins chose to pair JW3 with TREMORS which did around $60k in the first two days...
Biggest drive-in winner is of course FIRESTARTER...

Re: JW3 Weekend
You know its a good weekend when we can even say good things about Firestarter's performance, even if no one stayed to watch it in drive ins after Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park and TGM both co-existing this weekend is a great sign for the box office overall. If JP somehow manages to hold well enough to get to $400M I believe that's the first time I can recall seeing the top 3 movies all made of eventual $400M+ movies, though may just miss out. This weekend was 31% ABOVE 2019!

Re: JW3 Weekend
So it is disappointing compared to our (well some of us) post-No Way Home mammoth predictions, but pretty damn decent compared to the signs from the last few weeks. How long will the IP rest now?

Toy Story 4 But that was a previous high-water mark as I think the first time we had three $350m+ films in the Top 10 at the same time, so impressive for the market to match that now.

Re: JW3 Weekend
EC is saying 18.1m sunday for TGM. Its back to insane holds now that losing Imax/PLF is taken into account. I am believer in 600m domestic for it :-)
