They did over $800 million after losing the main character & actor. They did good

WF gross: $840.131M with no China
BP1 gross without China $1.245B
67.5% retention

A lot depends on preceding Marvel movie. Strange benefitted as the Spidy follow up and jumped from $232M to $411M between sequels. Thor then $343M bump over the last Thor's $315M. There's wasn't a lot of upward spring either for WF in terms of momentum.

CM2 for instance I'd be shocked if it outgrosses its predecessor, which opened six weeks before End Game so gained much of that halo.

Hypothetically, what would WF have made if it had followed Spider-man and had some type of tie in? Still wouldn't be enough to match BP1 but probably could have done another $75M-100M for $950M maybe.

Chadwicke of course was the biggest reason but $850M overall total won't be a franchise ender.

They can always juice up the next one with another Avenger if they're concerned about it waning.

I see The Marvels performing closer to Eternals than its predecessor. Captain Marvel's performance always baffled me. It was the biggest overperformance ever. So not in-keeping with reception, similar to Black Panther's overperformance (but we know why that happened).

No conspiracy or anything, but the film was obviously greatly helped by the BLM movement and white people being guilted into caring about black things. Being a Marvel movie just made it easy to sit through than, say, BlackKklansman or A Wrinkle in Time, lol.

The opening was fine, the legs and overseas numbers were disappointing. Bassett winning for best supporting actress would make it a success though. All their other movies and shows have had a middling reception this year. So getting that prestige back is probably worth more to future projects than an extra $50-100M for one film.

why is that even a thing? black people never have to be guilted to watch white things

Black things are always so samey. It's just one strain of culture, so it becomes boring. It's usually always about slavery or rights or the hood or blackness in general, which a lot of white people cannot relate to or have no interest in. "White things" is way more broad. White movies aren't 100 minutes of pointing out the differences between black and white people. There's just more options.

It's still a huge franchise, but Marvel is on the decline. But when your peak is like $2.5 billion WW, even a big decline is still a great success. But I think we will see more Eternals style underperformances. We shall see how the rebooted X Men does. Same with Fantastic Four, which never had a truly successful adaptation.

I take it films like moonlight don't exist to you?

Of course it does. But that just proves the point. An exception goes on to win Best Picture. Just shows what they can achieve when they venture beyond the hood.

Your viewpoint of African American film is astonishing. 90% of every culture’s films are the same. Your viewpoint seems to be only from barbershop, car wash, Friday, and 12 years a slave. And every other movie is them varied.

Most of Moonlight takes place in the hood though. :P

Yet you're also ignoring things like the 10+ year Tyler Perry run or The Best Man's Holiday randomly opening to $30M. It's only the black-led oscar bait that has you thinking they are all similiar.

You guys are probably correct. Let's just believe that black films are highly popular and there is no difference between them and the rest.
