I sort of consider next weekend, the calm before the storm.. I'm gonna say the weekend of the 13th-15th will be surprisingly low on everything all around.. On a side note: I just purchased my EPISODE III tickets.. 3 of them starting Friday the 20th at 7:15, Saturday the 21st at 7:15 and Sunday at 7:15.. My lucky showtime numbers and I figured that's when there's a large crowd is right at the peak of the evening.. I hope my donations to this movie will help Lucas buy the house he's always wanted?? :yikes:

Lucas might really cash in on a starving audience who is dying for a blockbuster/franchise type summer film. Nothing this upcoming week is going to break the bank at blockbuster levels. It'll be interesting to see if the soccer moms will be piling the kids in the car to see Kicking and Screaming, and I really think Monster-in-Law will surprise a lot of people. I don't expect much at all from the other two new releases.

I tend to agree with those that the lackluster May will help SW: ROTS. I mean, seriously, look at this year. What movie, Simn City aside, did really generate lots of hype and anticipation, just as SC did? Sure, Hitch was big and so were Robots and The Pacifier, but none of them had the must-see aspect and the hype and the anticipation. This one is the first "real blockbuster" since, um, I don't even remember... Meet the Fockers was much more of a surprise and didn't have the hype. Ocean's Twelve was horribly marketed. Probably the first hyped movie since The Incredibles and if you want only live-action, then probably the first since, well, last summer.

As for the upcoming weekend:

Kicking and Screaming stands a chance at breaking $30 million with an utter void of family flicks at the marketplace. I see a $9,000+ PTA as entirely possible.

Monster in Law will generat decent business, but it won't do much better than Lopez' previous flicks. I think around $19-21 million.

Unleashed seems undermarketed, but the PTA's of Kiss of the Dragon, Cradle 2 the Grave and Romeo Must Die have shown that he has a fanbase. I see an opening PTA of around $5,000, so probably around $9-11 million.

Mindhunters was dumped. As simple as that. About $2.5 million should be right.

I think 40M is possible for Kicking and Screaming, and 25M is possible for Monster-in-Law. Let's remember, people are ready for some fun, and what is more funny than laughing? The PG rating will definitely help K&S to the top, but I think the Jane Fonda factor will add more than many believe, and 25 is a strong possibility. I'll be starting a thread about this sometime during the week to cover my points better, and maybe even have some insights since I'm taking my mom to see it tomorrow afternoon.

I really think its going to be a race next weekend for the top spot.

I see it like this
MIL-23
K&S-28

I think its interchangable.

Now I agree that K&S has great potential, but $40+ million is a wee bit too high. When was the last time we had a "simple kiddie picture" open that high? Not that I can remember. I think the highest possible is $35 million, but since neither The Pacifier nor Daddy Day Care made $35 million, I don't think K&S will get $35 million either. But it will probably cross the $30 million mark.

Aghhh! Actually I typoed that, and the rating is PG. I edited a minute before you posted, but it was too late...lol

30 million is pretty much a given. He has a fanbase that has opened in that range enough times, but I think the lack of summer fun and family films could possible drive it a smidge higher.

An anecdote about Kicking and Screaming

A little paper, distributed for free to everyv house, in Grand Rapids, MI and surrouding areas, the second largest Metropolitan area in MI, was giving away passes for an advance screening next Tuesday. The first 90 people in line when they open at 8 get the passes. On a warm May day years past even lower end movies usually have enough people in line by 7:30. For Kicking and Screaming there were maybe 30 people in line at 8:00. Even on cold winter days when there is often not enough people in line at 8 the papar has a policy no person can go through twice. Here there were so few people there they let people go through two to 3 times. They still had some left!!

If they cannot give away tickets, who is going to pay? If the demand is so small there is no way it will get over 20. I bet it does not match XXX.

I don't think $30 million is a "given" for Kicking and Screaming. It's a great possibility, but it can make just under $30 million.

Yeah guys, honestly, 30 million? I don't think parents are that starved to take there kids to a comedy. Hitchhiker's Guide was by almighty Disney and had family appeal (the ads disguised it's eccentricness) but only opened to 21 million. Why would Kicking and Screaming do 50% more? It's not even trying to get the older audiences, just little kids. The thing that I think will hamstring it is that Will Ferrell appeals to older audiences much more then kids. Are We There Yet? and The Pacifier were both huge hits because the trailers were full of laughs and the main actors were playing against type. Will Ferrell is just doing his manchild dime a dozen routine, and I really think having the main character look like a complete asshole doesn't always pay off (it's probably why Anchorman did noticably worse then Dodgeball despite more hype and the trailer getting more laughs), especially when parents are taking there impressionable kids to this. That and I've seen barely any ads for this. I dunno guys, I mean maybe audiences are still in the spring mindset rather then the summer one, that seems to be the case to me. Just like Shrek 2 last year, Star Wars is going to get a huge advantage from such a weak slate before it. I do find it interesting though how we seem to have this pattern where the summer opener was huge (Twister), died down and receded to later, then slowly grew bigger and bigger until it reached the heights of Spider-Man, and afterwards slid back down until it's as monumentally low as it is now.

We shall see. I haven't really begun to really look into next weekend yet, just throwing ideas out right now. I'm waiting until Monday to have a better fix on the situation, but Monster-in-Law will be more of my focus.

Kicking and Screaming will most likely open around 20m-25m and have good holds like Pacifier to get it close or passed 100m it's almost a given considering the genre and the lack of children movies.
