Kicking and Screaming Box Office Analysis
Okay, so after the disasterous BO analysis from two weeks ago ( xXx: State of the Union), I'm going to give it a second go. Karl recommended that I try this movie, so here it is. I guess it's better I did a movie that I have absolutely no bias about.
Any comments? Objections? Criticism?
All are welcome before, during, and after the weekend. #-o

I have little to no interest in seeing this movie. I'm a Will Ferrell fan, but this doesn't look all that great. But, if the little sister must see it, so do I. #-o

Good article, Zingy, but I think you're shooting a bit too high. I think this looks absolutely terrible, and i'm a huge Ferrell fan. I was thinking somewhere around the mid-teens for the opening weekend.

I think Daddy Day Care looked much worse than this movie, I see it topping 30 million

I don't think it looks that good, either, but when you consider Daddy Day Care (which looked, and probably will be 10x worse), I think that this can't do under $20 million this weekend. There hasn't been ONE kids movie since Robots. Hence Robots excellent week-to-week drops. Kids need a movie to watch until Madagascar. This is it.

Is this really a kids movie, though? I'm not sure if it's being pitched as one or not. I've seen the trailers in front of more adult aimed movies, so I dunno...

You don't think they will all be going to a movie that opens 8 days sooner than Madagascar?

I think the demographic for this movie is very wide. It ranges from children to seniors. It's mostly aimed at kids, but I can almost guarantee that adults (whether they want to see it or they have to take their kids) and elders will go, too.
Teens; I'm not so sure about. Will Ferrell is a draw, but I think this is being marketed as a kid's movie.

Oh, yes, I do.
It's all in the analysis, Mav.
That's why I'm thinking this will drop around 40% because of Sith instead of a possible 30% without it.

That's just it, though. The potential demo's on this thing are huge, but I don't think they are going to be able to attract anyone fom those demo's with the piss poor trailers and TV spots they've put together thus far. I've been wrong before, and i'll be wrong again, but this one just *feels* like a bomb to me, or at least a disappointment.

It's just as much a kids movie as Robots. But, as Zingy said, it's been a while since the last kids movie. To get coverage, Universal (right?) has to try and get it shown in the teen aimed movies.
I'm expecting around a $26m opening. It's got less appeal than The Pacifier (partly because of the reason you mentioned. It's definitely a kids film, but it isn't directing the trailers towars ANY demographic and that's a problem), even though it's probably 10x better.

After seeing Monster-In-Law, I think the ball is in Kicking and Screaming's court. Based on early reviews I would guess it will be end up with mostly positive reviews vs MILf which aside from stunt casting, is garbage and will be reviewed as such.
Good reviews for Kicking and Screaming will bring in Will fans who hate kids. Enough to capture the weekend.

As you notice, The Pacifier was a bit lowballed, too. People expected high teens to low $20 million's, and it ended up opening over $30 million. Its legs were questioned throughout its entire run, yet it grossed a great $100 million. Daddy Day Care was extremely lowballed, too.

Oh, and I'm not saying that Kicking and Screaming is a lock for $30 million. I'm also not saying that it can't make less than $25 million this weekend. It can. I just highly doubt a weekend below $20 million for this.

I pretty much agree on everytghing you said in your analysis including your prediction. Personally I predict an opening of around $29-31 million and a total of $100-105 million.

It's certainly a possibility.
I mean, take a look at the theater count now. It's estimated at 3,300+. I said in the analysis that with that kind of theater count, a $30 million weekend is achievable.

I hope it breaks out. Seriously, the weekends have been very boring lately. I can't even remember the last time a movie crossed $30 million in its opening weekend. Was it The Ring Two? And only one single $40+ million opening this year so far...
ROTS is up for a $130+ million 4-day opening.

comingsoon.net predicts $21.4 million for Kicking and Screaming this weekend.
I think that's kind of low considering that their predicted PTA is smaller than Are We There Yet?'s PTA from January.

Kicking and Screaming should easily pull high 20s. This is an offseason "Cheaper by the Dozen" if you ask me.

Only good movies deserve to break out - let's wait for SW.
Hope none of the movies do well as none deserve it.

OK, The Pacifier is not a good comparison. The Pacifier's trailers were enjoyed by kids. Kids don't really get Kicking and Screaming's trailers, it appeals more to parents. Plus, there's really no premise to Kicking and Screaming. Will Ferell becomes a coach. Vin Diesel as a babysitter wasn't exactly original, but it was hilarious (to me  ). Kicking and Screaming is just going to benefit from a lack of family movies, obviously.
Opening: $22.5
Total: $70.0
It is also going to be hurt by Episode III, which some small kids want to see. It see a 42-50% 2nd weekend drop.

From the reviews I've read, Will Ferrell saves this movie. Of course, the movie isn't aimed at the reviewers, but that's good to know that Will Ferrell is going to be great in this movie.
It's currently at 60% on RT.

So, I guess you have seen Kicking and Screaming. What about posting your review, since you didn't think it was good...
