Post Summer 2005 Will Suffer
Here's the deal:

There is no major film that has gotten people into their seats to watch the trailers.

In a lot of cases, people simply have no other way to catch up on previews.

Believe it or not, most people don't give a hoot about movie websites or checking movie info on the net, especially not all of the 70m or so that a Shrek 2-like film needs to get into theatres.

In 2004, we had The Passion. That got 60m people into the seats! And not only that, we had Mean Girls and Man on Fire.

We have nothing of the sort this year.

As if that's not enough, both Kingdom of Heaven and that Wax film are not filling many seats, if my more than half empty theatre was any indication.

And, the SW3 trailer got a really nice reaction! Too bad so few were in the seats to watch it.

Anyways, yah, this is going to be a crappy summer.

Something like SWIII doesn't need a trailer.

ROTK got its trailer out three months before the release, in September, when most big movies were already gone to be played in front of. Secondhand Lions is hardly a blockbuster.

Didn't hurt the movie.

It's the smaller films that need it. As 2005 is not going to have a Shrek 2 AND SM2 double-punch, it needs the smaller films to make up for them.

But, as there is less exposure, it likely won't happen.

This will not be a good summer.

Ohhhhhh, btw, I saw the WOTW trailer in theatres, it was wonderfully done.

Btw, most people don't care about SW3. Most will not give it a chance anyways. That's where trailers come in. A lot of people know SW3 is coming out, but so what? A lot of people won't care for it.

Consider that, even Shrek 2 got 'only' 77m people into theatres. The other 230m North Americans passed on it. Heh.

Was that the teaser with the lighting and then driving away with the highway exploding behind them, or is there a new one? It's just that I heard there'd be a proper trailer out sometime this month.

Most people aren't gonna care about SW3 huh?? Is that why it's selling out Midnight show after Midnight Show left and right and getting very good reviews this early from those who have seen it?? In 2 weeks, you'll be backtracking on this statement..

Summer 05'

Chance at 100m

Kicking & Screaming
Longest Yard
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Bewitched
Fantastic Four
Stealth
Wedding Crashers
Dukes of Hazzard

Chance at 200m
Madagascar
Batman Begins
War of the Worlds
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Chance at 300m
ROTS

13 movies with the shot at over 100m is pretty damn good, obviously there will be no HUGE 400m movies this summer except ROTS has a slim chance, but theres gonna be plenty of hits.

bleh, this slow start will only help Sith as it did for shrek 2 last year, and we do have a doiulbe punch this year Box, Star Wars (which ticket sales proove that people do indeed want to see the greatness thus making your statement false), and War of the World. I would also like to mention that the true double punch this year will most likele be Narnia and King Kong, both having great shots at 300m

the Summer is so dead so far that that chance is becoming greater by the day.

People have liked War of the Worlds trailer, but the awareness about it isn't high.

Summer is really suffering this year.

Winter, with Potter, Narnia, Kong and Oscar movies is going to be the insane time this year.

Wow, total deja vu. After Van Helsing and Troy both dissapointed, everyone was saying the summer was doomed, but we still had a record breaking one. I just think that the first two weeks have been getting weaker lately, whereas there's a lot more solid product later in the months.

The Big Summer movie will have a Trailer/teaser with EP3. They should be safe. I expect something from War of the Worlds, Batman and FF4.

At the moment we dont have that much 100 Mio grossers. But we had already a strong surprise with Hitch.

Something is telling me that 2005 will make more than 2004. ( Isnt there also a Harry Potter????)

Yeah likely that not the summer will make the difference, but winter will.

What? No they didn't. They said May, and not summer, was doomed.

Everybody knew HP3 and SM2 would be huge, and they were.

There is no June release that's guaranteed to do as well as HP3 did. $250m is still hard to achieve. And nevermind about SM2. WOTW won't get within $100m of it.

What the hell are you talking about? In order for my statement to be incorrect, the film will have to make $1,031,250,000 domestically, which would correspond to more than half of N. America's population having seen it.

I doubt I will retract any statement.

You, however, will. Which is why I'm quoting you, as insurance.

Well i personally have a huge feeling Fantastic Four will make over 200 Million. So that might help if it does.

Well, of course, there could be some surprise just waiting to shock everyone.

There is one almost every summer, and I don't expect 2005 to be different. We just have to wait and see.

This year will likely be a year with more $100 million movies. Last year, we had about 3 $3 million+ million movies, which made the year seem huge, but actually, we had less $100 million movies.
