The biggest comic-book release of all time is just over a year away and already has a mountain of hype thanks to a teaser poster, a (bootleg) teaser trailer, and a predecessor with some of the best WoM for any blockbuster in recent memory. With that in mind, I think this film is a lock to shatter the OW record (whatever that may be by then :) ) So... who's with me?

I will say 200 Million, a much nicer sounding number.

Also, I guess doesn't matter it HP 7.2 gets this record, as he won't be holding it for long.

In In In fo sho. For real...forget spiderman, star wars, potter, matrix, etc. Forget the olympics, forget anything....The Dark Knight Rises on opening weekend will be the hottest, most in demand ticket of summer 2012.

This will be in what, 4,500 theaters, and around 2 1/2 hours long?

This will sell out, literally, every showing opening weekend.

I'm in and sure it'll top 200m OW with a 100m OD.

No chance. Definitely out. It won't even beat TDK.

Yep. The Dark Knight is pretty much the most 'beloved' movie of this generation.

Your really setting yourself up for a fall on this one Excel.. One can certainly appreciate your fanaticism over this, but again, you don't have the media selling an actors death around the movie like you did last time.. Remember that..

Again, this movie is not going to make a 100 Million dollars opening day.. I'm one of the biggest MARVEL fanboys out there and no matter how good the trailer for the AVENGERS is, you'll never hear or see me predict 100M opening day with this movie.. That's just downright absurd

I was definitely contemplating $200m at first, but kind of assumed it would be far too outlandish at this point. If people continue to join at such a pace, I'll definitely think about upping the bar.

Anything Rises loses from the lack of Ledger will be more than made up by the goodwill the last one generated for the franchise.

^ I agree with this. Even without Ledger TDK still gained enough legitimate goodwill from the fans and I can't see why they wouldn't line up in droves for this. The same thing happend with SM3. Eventhough that sucked it still had a HUGE opening due to the goodwill of SP2.

And there's still time before it opens for Tom Hardy to kick the bucket.

There is definitely a very good chance for it to break OW record but I don't think it will come this far out specially when TDK seems to keep its OW record by the time this comes out.

No.. Your suggesting TDK made it's 533 Milion Domestic without the help of Ledgers death and the media selling it around this and you folks know this isn't true and the only way you'll get this through your thick Nolan loving skulls is when TDKR doesn't come anywhere near TDK without that, goodwill or no goodwill.. I mean hell, I've been to other websites, RT included where even fans there admit it helped.. What's it going to take for you folks to finally accept this?? What?? Name it??

Not in. $175-180 million, yes...but $190 million seems too high for any movie at the moment.

Last time such an opening weekend record increase took place was when Spider-Man crushed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's record...so I suppose it is possible..but no, I don't see it happening.

Seems a bit of a stretch from $160m all the way to $190m+. Even Spiderman 1's ridiculous record setting opening was JUST $20m above HP1 back in 2002.

With TDKR not being in 3D will limit its potential, had it been in 3D i would've bite the bullet and gone for $190m+.

At this stage, i'm with Lecter, more around the $175-180m mark.

Though saying that, whenever there's a breakout on opening...it's usually very big.....we saw it with TDK, and TDKR may just do it. It's got pretty much everything in its favour....the best WOM you could ever hope for and what a way to kick off proceedings debuting your teaser with the last of the largest film series in history.

I see $500m pretty much certain. I can't wait for battle between The Avengers vs. Spiderman vs. The Dark Knight Rises. While we know who's going to win at the end, it's still great to see three of the largest comic book movies in the Domestic market (Avengers for me is Iron Man 2.5+) going at it in one Summer.

Will they eat each other?

I think most people are underestimating the Heath Ledger effect on The Dark Knight. The massive media around his death and his performance made a lot of people anxious for that film. It became a "lets go with a bunch of people" type movie, even for women (which is not the norm for comic book movies). Then there was the immediate amazing WOM that fueled new and repeat viewings the same weekend. TDKR does have the WOM of TDK to help, but like it or not, many people did go to TDK because of Heath Ledger and won't necessarily go to the new one regardless of how good it was.

If I could only see one comic book movie that summer, it would definitely be The Avengers, not Batman or Spider-man.

You don't know who's going to win next summer, no one does so let's not get ahead of ourselves.. You've put this movie on such a high pedestal that you and everyone else refuse to believe that a movie like the AVENGERS has no chance when in fact, it has an even better chance of making more $$$$ than TDKR for the simple fact that it's never been done before, it's out the gate 1ST in May and in 3D whereas TDKR isn't.. I get so tired of repeating the same shit over and over that it's like talking to a fucking wall.. TDKR is the 3rd movie and we know how 3rd movies perform and rarely, RARELY do they outgross there predecessors and without Ledger in this or his death and the media spinning it that way, I just can't see how TDKR will gross more than 400 Million AT BEST.. You folks really are setting yourselves up for disappointment if you act this way a year in advance.. Just saying

Geeze, 1 individual on this whole site agrees with the Ledger effect.. Your not going to make it.. ;) Really though, the only way this point is finally going to be hammered home is wait for next summer.. If this doesn't gross over 533 Million domestic like TDK did, then all of you have no choice but to conceed and admit I was right about it... If it's the other way around and it makes more than TDK, then I'll admit it myself, but it's just not going to happen unless something terrible happens to it's stars..

Here's another thing to consider: Why didn't BATMAN BEGINS make the $$$$ that TDK did, especially since Nolan made it?? Why??? Because Ledger wasn't in it nor his demise, so without Ledger in TDKR or the crap surrounding him, what the hell makes you think this is going to gross over 533 Million to top TDK???

I don't think anyone is arguing that Ledger's death didn't contribute - but it wasn't just the death, it was the mystical combination of many factors:

A promising young actor died before the film's release
The Joker is the keystone villain of the franchise
The young actor who died was playing that villain

As for the opening weekend, 160m seems about right for now.

I'm just wondering...why 190m and not 200m?

If this gets over 190m, I'm sure WB will buy out $10m worth of seats if necessary. :funny:
