I can tell you one of these are wrong. No movie ever plays in both of these theaters.

Anyway, I'm glad I'll be able to see it at one of those two on the 17th. :)

Also look at all those theaters we get for the movie in the Denver Metro area. Nearly as many as Chicago (which is like three times our size) or the state of New York. Basically, we rock. :P

It will get a high PTA this weekend, but not an astronomical one. I definitely do not see it getting the hype that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon got.

I predict around $0.555 million for this weekend for a total gross of around $15-20 million in the end.

Cool, there are 3 theaters within a couple of miles from me.

I want to see this movie - I saw a review where it said - Something about Hero and this was better.

Just can't wait.

Thats what Im thinking too. Crouching Tiger had at least some stars and director that were at least known to american audience and Hero too. House of Flying Daggers will only have Ziyi Zhang's name and the director of Hero's name to rely on.

I knew we had to agree on SOMETHING!
Basically, it doesn't have that much of an appeal to American audiences. No famous director, no Chow Yun Fat and no absolute rave reviews.

Weekend 1: $417,000, $27,800 PTA

As expected, not as great as CTHD, but not a bad number at all.

From HOFD's website, it appears they will expand it to more major cities in 2 weeks, but CTHD did double its theater count the second weekend, so I'm not sure.

Nice opening for House of Flying Daggers, but this has no chance of reaching $100m like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

I think that it even has no chance to gross more than HERO.

Nobody expects it to, so that's really not the point. Out of all the late foreign film releases that include The Motorcycle Diaries, The Sea Inside, Bad Education, A Very Long Engagement, it will be an achievement by itself to be highest grossing film among them.

Not astounding, but decent, I'd say. Without an expansion this weekend, I expect a drop of around 25%. In its third weekend, provided it expands to 155 theatres, I expect a gross of around $1.3-1.5 million.

I find it kindof dissappointing, but still decent, I was expecting a 30,000+ theatre average.

I'm planning to see this film as soon as it plays near me. I also want to see Hero, which I missed in theaters. I'm rather glad the DVD has an english-language track (I'm not a big subtitles fan).

1000 screens on January 14th.

http://www.indiewire.com/biz/biz_041208boxoffice.html

Sony Classics launched Zhang's "House of Flying Daggers" at 15 locations, taking in $397,472 for a $26,498 per screen finish, giving the Chinese/Hong Kong feature a second placement on the chart.

"I think it's really terrific [and] we're getting a little bit of everybody [attending the film]," said Sony Classics co-president Michael Barker in a conversation with indieWIRE yesterday afternoon. "We're counting on word-of-mouth to make the film a very big holiday picture." Sony Classics will have the film on 200 screens by Christmas, and up to 1000 by January 14th.

Barker conveyed his company's excitement with their recent releases, and praised the film's directors. "If you were to count on one hand the top directors [working today], I believe Almodovar and Zhang Yimou would be on that short list. Having the number one and two films is very gratifying." Continuing, Barker reiterated previous comments regarding the viability of foreign-language films he has made to this column earlier in the year. "Today, there's more of a [commercially successful] possibility to have subtitled movies. It's not just for the 'high art audiences' anymore."

Weekend 2:
Friday - $59,000
Saturday - $83,000
Sunday - $63,000

Weekend Gross - $205,416, -48.3%, $13,694 PTA

Total after two weeks: $723,017

Not a great second weekend comparing to other limited foreign releases such as Bad Education and A Very Long Engagment. Hopefully the awards it had won since Saturday can increase its visibility and help the PTA to stay in the $8,000 range when it expands this weekend. I'm going to see it either on Friday or Saturday.

Here are all the awards it has won:
Boston Film Critics Best Foreign Language Film
Boston Film Critics Best Director
Boston Film Critics Best Cinematography
Los Angeles Film Critics Best Foreign Language Film
Los Angeles Film Critics Best Cinematography Runner-up
Los Angeles Film Critics Best Production Design Runner-up
New York Film Critics Best Director Runner-up
National Board of Review Outstanding Production Design
6 Golden Sattelites Nominations
Nominated for Golden Globe Best Foreign Language Film

If they will expand it to 155 theatres next weekend as planned before I see a weekend take of around $1 million.
