Post Kicking & Screaming Predictions
Kicking & Screaming

Release Date: May 13, 2005
Studio: Universal Pictures
Director: Jesse Dylan
Screenwriter: Leo Benvenuti, Steve Rudnick
Starring: Will Ferrell, Robert Duvall, Mike Ditka, Kate Walsh, Jim Turner, Jarrad Paul
Genre: Comedy
Official Website: KickingandScreamingmovie.com
Plot Summary: Will Ferrell ("Elf," "Old School") stars in a lively comedy about the cutthroat, hyper- competitive world...of little league soccer.
"Kicking & Screaming" stars Ferrell as Phil Weston, an average Joe who's had to put up all his life with his overly competitive father, Buck (Robert Duvall). When Phil decides to coach his 10-year-old son's soccer team, he goes head-to-head for the league championship against Buck, who coaches his own young son on the preeminent team of the league. Old scores come into play as Phil and Buck find themselves going to extreme measures to win the championship trophy.

Okay, so I saw this trailer twice today when I went to the movies, and both times, great reactions. Lots of laughs with the new, funnier trailer. I think with the Daddy Day Care like release date it has, it can pull some good numbers. It has no competition until Madagascar comes out, and as we saw with The Pacifier, Robots didn't hurt it much. I think we're looking at another Will Ferrell hit here.

Opening: $28 million
Total Gross: $112 million

Gonna say that this one isn't a hit. It doesn't have a lot of appeal to older audiences since it looks very childish. Hell, even some teenagers wont' want to see this. My friends loved Anchorman but definitely weren't hot about this. And legs won't be great either since there's Star Wars second weekend and Madagascar third, and no summer weekdays until about week five or six. I'd go with 22/70

This isn't really that much of mainstream comedy, not much laugh-out-loud stuff. It will still do good though.

Opening: $17.5
Total: $60.0

I'm going to watch the trailer, but based on that premise, I don't see it being a huge hit. Will Ferrell doesn't possess the Midas Touch. He can't make everything a smash hit.

Opening: $22 million
Total: $78 million

Edit: Will Ferrell looks to be the only good part of the movie. Looks comical, but not spectacular. My prediction didn't change upon viewing the trailer, either.

Yeah, why will this open better then Anchorman? That got good reviews and had the middle of the summer, whereas this doesn't have the same teenage and adult appeal, not to mention this looks a lot worse. I love Ferrell, but he has to be a bit more selective then this if he wants to get anywhere.

I don't think it's aimed at teens. It's aimed at kids. Similar to The Pacifier and Daddy Day Care, this should be a decent hit.

Yeah, but both of those had hillarious trailers that got tons of laughing in my theater. When I saw the begining of Robots, it was extremely muted for Screaming.

Kicking & Screaming should do decent numbers, but will be effected a lot by Madagascar. (More than The Pacifier was by Robots)

My thoughts

You know what? Look at the marketplace at the moment and tell me how many family flicks are out there right now? While Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is partially marketed as one, most of us know it isn't. Sahara is the only movie doing well right now, that somewhat appeals to families and children.

But what I am talking about are full-blown family flicks á la The Pacifier, Are we there yet? or Robots. The answer is: There are none! Look at Robots' performance over the last few weeks. Its last three drops were 22.5%, 5.2% and 22.5%. Now let's take a look at The Pacifier's performance. Its last three drops were 34.1%, 12.6% and 22.6%. These numbers are telling us one thing: the market is in a need for family flicks. Next weekend we have three new movies coming out. One of them is a heavy R-rated drama, the other one is an R-rated horror flick and the last is an R-rated historical epic. Needless to say that none of them resembles an family film. These circumstancs will most likely give movies like The Pacifier, Robots and Sahara good holds even, despite constant losses of theatres and screens.

Kicking and Screaming looks to be pure family entertainment and the last time Will Ferrell was in a family flick, the movie in concern was Elf that opened with $30+ million and ended up with $170+ million. Movies like Anchorman as well as his cameo in Starsky and Hutch certainly lifted his profile, but I don't think these movies matter too much in this case. I doubt that all The Fast & The Furious/xXx-fans went out to see The Pacifier, yet the movie became a hit.

The situation reminds me of the time when Shark Tale came out. It was release when the market was completely devoid of any family flicks. Despite horrible reviews, it opened north of $40 million. Now, I am aware of the fact that Kicking and Screaming ain't no Shark Tale, but it has big family appeal and that is what most movies in wide release are lacking at the moment. There is a gap that needs to be filled and at least for the weekend before Star Wars comes out, Kicking and Screaming will fill this gap. I can't possibly see this movie not performing well whatsoever.

My predictions:

Opening weekend - $29.8 million

Total gross - $103 million

I'm just not feeling it ... small opening and somewhat big drops because of STAR WARS and MADAGASCAR ...

Huge count. Not surprised though, since there has been no kids film released since late March.
