Being a financial hub does not really mean that a movie will breakout even if it is HK and the movie's name is Wall Street. I mean it is in contention with Chen Zhen (though a bit far but not as much as I first expected it to be) I would say that the appeal of Wall Street is misleading. There is of course the business sector that will turn out in droves to see this. Then, those that aren't interested in business/financial markets might go for the romance factor and even still, they might just go for the premise alone. The premise itself is not strictly regulated to financial businesses but more about business in general. The movie is about the art of business wrapped around in the financial sector than just a pure stock market movie. They do not pigeonhole themselves into the niche market because they know they will not reach many people this way so they try to explain/make things as broad as possible to have any sort of connection. Not to mention that many foreign stock markets follow the US market religiously and that English is a major language and the global language of trade. Speaking of HK, it was always going to be big here. It is precisely the movie title (Wall Street) and how Hong Kong is like (very business oriented -- "time is money") is why the movie has succeeded here.

Romance factor applies to about 40% of movies so I don't see that making a difference. None of the lead actors is very well known romantic dramas. Again Malaysia is a big country unlike HK and Singapore still the appeal is quite high there.
Don't understand what point you are making but if the movies makes money even in the small markets and will definitely make bucks in bigger markets as all of them have one or another financial hub located.
Again the legs will be decent because it skews older people....so given that opening numbers are good and much more than expected

While romance is not a huge factor, there is still a romantic subplot in the movie. It will no doubt attract females. Expanding on my point about HK being a financial hub, it has been regarded as the financial hub of Asia because it has been able to tap into China's market without sacrificing freedom. You shouldn't be surprised that it is doing well in Singapore either. Singapore is ranked 4th (just behind Hong Kong) in the world's top financial centers. Hong Kong ranks as top finance hubHere's another article talking about why Hong Kong cannot shed its title of being a global financial center. Quote: With wide business experience, Wu gave a list of reasons for why Hong Kong cannot forgo its role as an international financial center. "Already the world's third largest financial center," Wu said, "Hong Kong is poised for greater accomplishment."
...
The first reason lies with Hong Kong's financial freedom, a distinction that has become dearer given that the city is part and parcel of the largest developing country, whose industrialization and modernization is a most recent thing.
The second reason concerns "the freedom of knowing", said Wu, referring to the information freedom deeply rooted in this culture. "Information matters, and immediate information carries far more weight in the financial industry," Wu said, adding, "A delayed financial decision can cost us really dearly, even if that delay is just a matter of several seconds. We are making decisions not by imagination but by immediate information."
The independent and full-fledged legal system in Hong Kong, together with its effective market monitoring mechanism, makes it a formidable player. HK as financial hub: promise, challengesWall Street is centered around finance. It's no secret then that with Hong Kong and Singapore as leading financial centers, this movie would do exceptional business. I don't really understand what you mean when you say that movies like Wall Street don't do well in Malaysia, Singapore, HK. What movies?

Excellent for Chen Zhen. That is an amazing increase from Friday. The fight between Wall Street and Resident Evil continues. The good thing for Resident Evil is that it has not been given any morning shows on the weekend which always does the most business for any 3D movie. It will have a better than expected hold next week because of this. Wall Street did fantastic numbers in the business areas but finished in 3rd in the non-business districts. I thought it will do better on the weekend due to the long runtime but it looks like it is been increasing in a typical manner. Nice of Devil to at least match its Thursday admissions. Not as frontloaded as I thought.

Good increase for Chen Zhen. Somewhat alarming decreases for Wall Street and Resident Evil. Both should have held better.

Weekend Summary: Chen Zhen opens powerfully with 100,000+ admissions. It should be around $700,000 in gross (unless if The Expendables opening weekend admissions is wrong). Resident Evil just nicked Wall Street for #2 even with no morning shows for the weekend. This bodes quite well for next week as the heavy business from the weekend mornings will soften the drop. Wall Street opened in a very good 3rd place. I actually find the admissions number slightly disappointing considering how business oriented HK is. Devil opened to a soft #4 and Killers dropped heavily.

Re: HK 9/23 WKD: Chen Zhen powers to #1; RE4 nips WStreet for #2
Top 10 of 2010 and October schedule updated.
Release Date | Movie Title |
October 7 | Grown Ups Flowers Reign of Assassins Liar Game: The Final Stage Brooklyn's Finest I Am Love |
October 14 | Confessions The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Eat Pray Love Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole 3D Child's Eye 3D 22 Bullets (L'Immortel) |
October 21 | Charlie St. Cloud The Other Guys Jackass 3D Perfect Wedding The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec Bayside Shakedown 3 |
October 28 | Paranormal Activity 2 Saw 3D Life As We Know It Lover's Discourse Let Me In |
October 31 | Tetsuo The Bullet Man |
Several interesting weekends this month. Starting off the month is a fairly dead week. Grown Ups should take this one. Reign of Assassins might surprise though. The October 14 week is the most interesting week of the month for me. You've got 1 standard children's flick, 1 suspense/thriller, 1 action movie, 2 well-received limited release movies and 1 Julia Roberts film. I think Ga'Hoole will lead all new releases but the gross won't be anything outstanding since it's not an American-voiced film. Eat Pray Love doesn't look like it will do much and people are exhausted from all the suspense thrillers that come out last month so Child's Eye won't grab people's attention. Out of the 3 foreign language films, I think Confessions will come out on top since it has gotten good reviews and there are a lot of Japanese speakers here. Dragon Tattoo will probably come close thanks to rave reviews but I don't think it will win. 22 Bullets won't make much of a dent. October 21 will see The Other Guys finish first and the battle for horror supremacy is once again highlighted on the Halloween weekend. I think Saw will finish first for the weekend. Part of Paranormal Activity's hype was that you've never been freaked out like that before. I'm not sure if audiences will respond to another ploy like that again. In terms of gross, Paranormal Activity was released in early 2010 but only made half of what Saw VI banked. Other release dates: 11/4 - The Girl Who Played With Fire, Takers, Red 11/11 - The Kids Are All Right, Under the Hawthorn Tree 11/18 - Skyline 11/25 - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World 12/2 - The Social Network, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest 12/9 - Narnia 3: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader 12/23 - Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Tron: Legacy, Megamind, The Borrower Arrietty (Christmas Day) 1/20/2011 - Never Let Me Go 2/2 - The Green Hornet 2/3 - Little Fockers 3/31 - Sucker Punch 4/7 - Rio 4/21 - Rango 5/5 - Thor 6/30 - Transformers 3 7/21 - Kung Fu Panda 8/4 - Captain America

That is a spectacular number for Resident Evil. That should make it one of the top 3 openings of the year when you factor in last weekend's previews. Detective Dee more than held its own against Resident Evil. It's poised to hit $700,000 for the weekend. Chen Zhen fell by 65% this week after another similar action film opened and stole its screens. It looks like 2 Chinese action films cannot survive alongside each other. Wall Street had a very nice drop after it's slightly disappointing opening weekend. This is on its way to over $1m. Devil had a good drop after its soft opening. Holidays last week and this week have inflated the drops/totals a bit. Next week will see a lot of huge drops. Weekend of Sept. 23-26, 2010: 1. Legend of the Fist: The Legend of Chen Zhen Media Asia $835,725 1 41 $20,384 0 $1,066,727 2. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps Fox Int'l $451,415 1 34 $13,277 0 $451,415 3. Despicable Me Universal Int'l $7,644 8 4 $1,911 -35 $1,487,549 Resident Evil's preview numbers were not listed so it looks like they will be added in next week. Here's where the top 10 OW's stand as of right now. 2010 OW: 1 Toy Story 3 $3,239,287 2 Alice in Wonderland $1,902,019 3 Ip Man 2 $1,736,771 4 Inception $1,674,990 ($1,779,352 incl. previews) 5 Shrek Forever After $1,555,601 6 Iron Man 2 $1,529,782 7 Clash of the Titans $1,379,653 8 72 Tenants of Prosperity $859,854 9 Legend Of The Fist: The Return Of Chen Zhen $856,973 10 The Twilight Saga: Eclipse $815,355 ----- Salt $778,132 Knight & Day $768,860 Predators $760,039 Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time $729,883

Where did you go?
I saw your Top 10 of 2010 post in Cinemania, and want to know your thoughts (or a review) of Confessions.

Notes: - Harry Potter moves up to December 16. In response to this move, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader moves up a week to December 2. - Little Fockers has a date set. Set to be released on February 3. It will do battle with The Green Hornet. - The Town has now been moved to December 9. Corpse wrote: Where did you go?
I saw your Top 10 of 2010 post in Cinemania, and want to know your thoughts (or a review) of Confessions. Been busy with life. Thoughts: - Great movie. It was gripping, entertaining and thought-provoking. I considered putting Confessions ahead of Inception but I felt that the movie was a bit empty at the end...meaning it lacked a certain feeling of emotion that these movies tend to do whether it's anger, sorrow, etc. - It really touched on certain issues like the child protection laws or bullying, discrimation and it felt as if you were the student being bullied. It really brings to life your own memories and preys on them if you get my drift. It sucks you in before you can get out. - I felt there was a moment in the film that was slightly ridiculous which was the revelation of the bomb blowing up the university. First of all, wouldn't there be security to check for explosives? Second, shouldn't the mother have seen the bag left there and given it to security? . Other than that, no real ridiculous moments. - I loved the confession parts and I thought it was brilliant. Not only is everything revealed bit by bit but we get up close and personal with the characters highlighted in the film. I also loved that the movie did a fake-out with the whodunit? beginning scene. In fact, we find out who the killers are twenty minutes into the film which makes the film more engaging as now we look into the psychological aspects of the characters involved. - Although I didn't find any parts disturbing, it can be too much to handle for those unprepared. It's dark but it's not gory and the classical music just adds to the haunting revelations/scenes. - The actors were brilliant and I can't find any faults here. - The theme is pretty much about retribution. How far will someone go to seek revenge over those lost loved one? As a teacher, Moriguchi-san is bounded by the child protection laws that exist. What and how she does to exact revenge is fascinating and disturbing at the same time. This is a must see movie and it'll be one that will stay with me for awhile.

Re: HK: Narnia 3 opens. +American, Girl Played With Fire, Gr
Schedule for December:
Release Date | Movie Title |
December 2 | The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader The American The Girl Who Played With Fire Revenge: A Love Story The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya In Case of Love Police Dog Dream Grease [1978] (Sing-a-long version) |
December 9 | With Love...From The Age Of Reason Outrage The Town Natali 3D |
December 16 | Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I |
December 18 | Beyblade: Metal Fight |
December 23 | Tron: Legacy 3D Megamind 3D Gulliver's Travels 3D |
December 25 | The Borrower Arrietty |
December 30 | Norwegian Wood Love and Other Drugs |
Dec 2: Narnia wins here. No surprises. I think Narnia 3 will decrease over it's predecessors. It faces immense competition as Harry Potter comes out its third week and had to move up a week after Harry Potter moved up. 2 weeks should be enough to make most of its gross and I expect a final tally of 2.5-3m. If the movie is as good as the reviews advertised, it could make more than 3m but not much more than that. It should open with more than $1m. For comparison: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe - $3,915,444 Prince Caspian - $3,266,786 Dec 9: Narnia will win here. The Town will steal adult viewers, however. Dec 16: Harry Potter mania. IMAX presales have been buzzing. Overall grosses (Harry Potter series): HP2 - $4,907,373 HP3 - $4,339,688 HP4 - $5,966,462 HP5 - $6,650,517 HP6 - $5,873,659 Opening will be no less than $2.3m and it should do around $2.6-2.8m. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes the OW of the year away from Toy Story 3 though. It's last film did open to over $2.9m for the weekend but that was in the summer. In fact, the last Harry Potter film to open in December was HP4 but unfortunately, there was no data for the opening weekend of HP4 so we have to go back to HP2 to get any comparable data. That movie opened with $2.3m. Signs point to a huge opening with IMAX presales and scheduling to go on. IMAX presales have been great so far and the premium showtimes are more than 50% sold out after only a few days. As for the scheduling, it will face 3 huge competitors with Tron, Megamind and Arrietty all stealing away screens the following week. Still, Christmas has shown it can handle competition before. Christmas and New Year's will help with Harry Potter's legs but I see it ending up with over $6.5m total with it challenging and (most probably) winning to take the crown away from HP5 as the biggest HP film to date. Dec 23 - Another huge week. The three openers will all be very huge but I expect Arrietty to have a huge opening due to the immense popularity of Japanese anime here. Howl's Moving Castle opened to $1.6m but was frontloaded and only finished with $2.8m. Megamind could be in some trouble as it might be overshadowed by Arrietty. Tron will do a decent amount of business as the only non fantasy/animation flick. It may even open to over $1m. Harry Potter winning a second week is almost certain although with Arrietty's great reviews and the Japanese anime fanbase here, I would not count anything out. Dec 30 - Dead week. This could be a switcheroo week. If Arrietty opens like how Ponyo did (low opening but great legs), we could see Harry Potter give up the crown to Arrietty. If not, then I expect Harry to take it for a third week/or Arrietty for a second week if it opens above Harry's 2nd week. Great weeks ahead. I will definitely cover this week, Harry Potter week and Christmas week so expect a lot of updates from now till then. Notes: Harry Potter IMAX presales are now ongoing. Ticket sales have been brisk. Harry Potter regular presales now on sale.

Re: HK 10/2 THU: Narnia #'s missing. American #2
I completely forgot that Arrietty is coming out on Christmas Day and not on December 23. Harry Potter will win easily then 2nd week while Arrietty's numbers should spike up the following week.

Re: HK 10/3 FRI: Narnia rules over all.
Wow I thought it was just SK and France getting Potter late. This is by far the latest market.
Not sure what piracy is like in HK but surely it has to hurt coming out a month later than the rest of the world?
SEA and Asia as a whole are infamous for downloads, piracy and the like.

Surprisingly good numbers for Narnia. I did think it will open with good numbers but these are very good numbers.

SEA and Asia as a whole are infamous for downloads, piracy and the like. It will have little effect. Harry Potter is very popular here and people are willing to pay to see it in theaters. The only people who will download movies with this amount of hype are people that cannot afford to see it in a theater. Presales back me up on this. In regular theaters, this is selling out much faster than what Narnia's presales did for opening day. While Narnia started pre-selling just 3 days before, Harry Potter is still 2 weeks away. Harry's going to be huge, regardless of its release date.

Bluebomb how is that comparing to past Narnia movies? I mean the admissions increase ? Because I am sure that this being in 3D helped its admissions a lot..... and I am guessing these Sunday admissions are not complete yet

Re: HK 10/5 SUN: Narnia crosses 100k admissions (Fri-Sun onl
I for once am surprised that it did so well than Caspian. It wasn't expected to open ahead of Narnia1, still this number is pretty good. It dropped on Sunday which is quite worrying no matter what little it dropped, then again this is also expected to be frontloaded though not as Twilight or HP movies

Re: HK 12/10 FRI: Narnia has impressive hold; The Town opens
Notes: - The Cantonese 3D version of Narnia was released on December 9. - Tron: Legacy IMAX pre-selling has started. It will be shown in both IMAX theaters. - All theaters have started to sell tickets early for the English version of Harry Potter. However, pre-selling for the Cantonese version has not been released. Expect a possible redux of Narnia with Harry Potter.

Even though there was no competition to be found, it still held well and is benefiting from the good word of mouth. I think at this point, 3m has to be assured. The Town opened mildly.
