Post Passion's Re-Release...
...clearly indicates to me that the controversy was the cause for its tremendous performance in 2004. I'm positive the film would have struggled to gross 1/10th its total without it.

Think about it: the film got free advertising for over a month. That is priceless. Not even Spider-Man 2 with its $100m ad campaign had the kind of publicity that Passion had in February/March.

As Mel Gibson would say, "Thank Jew!"

Sorry for the play on words...

If F9/11 would be released right now, it's performance would be equally piss-poor.

Just some thoughts...

No, it's more of a film that you see once and never want to see again because of its sadness / drama. This is what I heard about it, along with other movies like Million Dollar Baby.

Then how do you explain the millions od DVDs?

Anyways, most would not have given it a chance in theatres were it not for the controversy. Why? Because they would never have heard of it.

I guess people just thought they should buy the DVD to have around...

I think a Christian movie studio would really do good if it captured the Passion's audience. There's tons of Bible stories that could be film adapted with big budgets, plus they could just make normal movies with a lighter theme, kinda like National Treasure since it is only PG.

Woops, I think that was a bit off-topic.

I think people are reading too much into it. This has nothing to do with its controversy. This is all about the stupidity of re-releasing a movie after it's gone to DVD. Fans of the movie have already bought it. And if anyone else wants to watch it again it's much easier, and cheaper, to go rent it.

I think the whole concept of re-releasing movies is dead. Once a movie is on DVD these days, that's it.

I didn't include 2005 release, except for TPOTC, assuming any made it. But I don't think so.

Anyways, OMG, this is the first chart I've posted in months

Yeah, but that statistic is meaningless. Nearly all releases are automatically locked in for 2 weeks at a theater. If theaters were allowed to ditch them, there would be tons of movies with huge theater drops in their second weekend. The only thing that makes Passion's drop significant is that it didn't have a 2-week guaranteed run.

That's a given. Nevertheless, it now holds the record for the worst second weekend theatre count drop.

A number of the other films on the chart are re-releases too, and in the case of the SM1/MIB2 double, very close to the initial release. DP is right; once it's on DVD, scratch it off the re-release list.

Btw, welcome to KJ's. Are you from BOM?

I didn't realize so many films have been dropped in their second weekend, but most of them are relatively old.

Context is the key.

Without the controversy, Passion is just another bad movie by Mel Gibson.

I guess I just don't see why it needed to happen? The Passion was an inspirational movie, but also the story behind it was quite interesting. This just seems like a quick money grab, you know?

The movie about the greatest man to ever live and the son of god needs to be grand, well made and should not be pretentious.

How was it pretentious? It showed the final twelve hours of his life in graphic detail?

That is the whole point. Instead of focussing on what Jesus lived and died for, we get a wes craven version of christ's final 12 hours. Pathetic.

There are hundreds of movies that focus on the life of Christ and present his death in very much a G or PG rated version. I think Gibson should be commended for showing his death as it was, though many historians believe it was even worse then shown. Perhaps Gibson could have used the Recut version as the original release and added a few additional flashbacks of his ministry, but I felt that what was released is commendable.

I don't think it caused a huge problem for the movie as a lot of people liked how graphic/real it was, but it would've been better if the movie included some other scenes/flashbacks. I think that would put the story in a better context for those who are unfamiliar with it.

Without getting into the whole controversy about its quality (because regardless of the quality, the first film had an audience), I would say that the primary reason is... after seeing The Passion of the Christ in theaters... and then some people buying it on DVD just a few months ago... how do you then again sell a product... and not only sell the product but sell LESS of the product.

It would have been one thing if it was a special edition with 15+ minutes of extra footage... it probably would have been another thing if the film had been cut MORE and made a PG-13 rating and opened itself up to even more people.

But Gibson is trying to sell a cut of the film which is apparently less impactful, to the same audience (still rated R) who probably didn't end up missing it the first time. I understand he got letters requesting a toned down Passion of the Christ, and I'm sure all of the 100 people who wrote those letters saw The Passion Recut, but there is just nothing to suggest that anybody should go see it.
