Post Re: China Box Office
Do you guys remember that cheapie crappy suspense thriller that came out a few months ago called Fall?

China has allowed that to be released this week, lol. Just so at the end of the year they can say they've let such-and-such number of foreign movies be screened in the country. China is very much a numbers game. Everything is run on quotas. Context or quality isn't important. As long as they can spout that the same or a similar number of foreign movies have come out, that is what their propaganda department will push.

Where the Crawdads Sing previewed at the weekend, so I added its gross to the chart. It seems China is rushing to use up the quota of foreign movies on unpopular, small titles. Again, all political.

Estimates are in for One Piece Film: Red's opening day. It did 560k admissions, about $2.93 million.

Not bad for how the box office is now, but still not as good as Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween ($3.2m and 652k adm), though that opened on a Friday, not a Thursday. But I am not sure there's a huge difference in China. I guess we'll see tomorrow when the Friday estimates come out.

With China barely releasing any imported films (Hollywood in particular), how are theaters holding up? Is the Chinese movie industry enough to keep them going?

Frankly, I do not know. But I will say this: COVID has been the perfect litmus test for all businesses in China, so any product they receive they'll be grateful for. If they managed to scrape by through three years of lockdowns and venue closures, not getting Strange World won't be a problem. China produces a ton of films, and this is precisely what the CCP wants, too, for Chinese people to see Chinese films with Chinese [CCP controlled] narratives.

I'm no longer in China but when I was there I didn't observe any cinema closures during the pandemic, though I'm sure they occurred. I heard about some businesses being given grants and subsidies, but on the other hand it is quite known that the Chinese government gave no financial aid to any private business during the pandemic.

Some big Chinese movies are coming out on 31st December; Post Truth and Better Man. I'm not sure how big they'll be but judging from their "want to see" scores, they're bigger than most (though only about 10% of Avatar: The Way of Water).

Some good news!

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will come out in China on 23rd December. Also, Avatar will have a short re-release from Monday 12th December, in around 80 cinemas, to further build anticipation for the sequel which opens on Friday.

A very good weekend, which I'm going to attribute to the relaxation of the COVID policy across China. While it's still largely in place, there have been significant changes to the draconian measures of the last three years. This can only be good news for Avatar: The Way of Water.

9-11 December Weekend Chart

1. (1) One Piece Film: Red - $4,970,000 -40%, $18,800,000 - Week 2
2. (2) Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween - $2,440,000 +30%, $20,410,000 - Week 3

I think Avatar 2 is going to make over 800m+ in China.

It practically has 5 weeks to itself and then the Chinese New Year onslaught on its 6th week. I think it will recover on the 7th and 8th weekends after the Chinese New Year films collect most of their revenue from 1 week.
