Post Re: China Box Office
There are currently no foreign films in release, and I don't expect there to be any added for the next few weeks either. It is China's National Day on 1st October, which lasts for seven days and is also called Golden Week. Nationalist propaganda films are released at this time or a few days before, and it looks like older nationalist films will also be playing. At least the top ten will look different!

There are four new releases coming out on 30th September. I expect two will be big, and those are China's rip-off of Top Gun, called Born to Fly, and the war/disaster movie called Homecoming. Interest is high on these.

The others are the Li Bingbing medical drama Ordinary Hero, which has about 10% of the buzz of the previous two, and a revisionist war drama called Steel Will, which has zero buzz. Steel Will previewed last Saturday and made $140,000, which isn't much, but let's see how it does. It will be interesting to see if they fudge the numbers to make the historical propaganda movie seem as though everyone is watching it.

Give Me Five is top of the Chinese box office but opened in 19 U.S. cinemas with a poor $1k average.

Next week Wolf Pack opens, also via Well Go USA. Nobody in China even cared about that, so I don't expect many to care in America either. But it is an action film, so perhaps more cinema-friendly than a film about a father suffering from Alzheimer's. It looks pretty rubbish. Let's see.

Out of the four new releases, Born to Fly seems to have been pulled from release. It's showing at no cinemas and it's no longer even on the schedule. Not sure what happened there. But a new Chinese animated movie has been added which is out today, New Happy Dad and Son 5: My Alien Friend, and Come Back Home on 3rd October, with Donnie Yen among others.

As expected the top three spots go to the new releases, in this order: Homecoming ($7.4m), Ordinary Hero ($2.3m), then Steel Will ($1.2m). Not huge blockbusters or anything, but the busiest two days in the Chinese market are Saturday and Sunday, so we should see some sizeable increases, and it's Golden Week for the next seven days so all movies will benefit hugely. Warriors of Future will finally reach $100 million.

Weirdly the Friday top ten was updated with numbers for Born to Fly. Though something is strange. It apparently had 33,000 showings, but it's not playing here. So maybe it's just out in Beijing and/or Shanghai. Anyway, it also didn't do much. Just $80,000. The numbers don't make sense. It had a $5,378 per screen average, so it seems it was playing on just 16 screens on Friday. How does 16 screens have enough time in the day for 33,000 showings?? Let's say they can play the movie 10 times per day on one screen, they're accounting for a further 32,840 showings. Something is off with these numbers, but then it is China, and all numbers are just made up to fit a narrative (and it is a military propaganda film so I'm sure some number-fixing will take place).

Anyway, it's better to check back after the weekend when all mistakes and such have been ironed out.

Huh? But it came out on Friday, as I said above it had 33,000 showings.

Perhaps that was just a preview of sorts, then? They may be expecting a much bigger release later on?

Something is not right here. There's only a handful of reasons you pull a movie a day before its release. If the CGI was bad, then it's to save face, and as this is a propaganda movie being released at a time of national pride (National Day was on 1st October), that is very important to the CCP. But it's weird because it obviously got to within a day of release and nobody had flagged the bad CGI, which makes me wonder if they only realized after bad online feedback, then (as is usual in China) they quickly rush to solve the problem at the last minute, and all they could do is pull it and release it later. Everything is so cha bu duo (means "good enough") in China, so it doesn't surprise me that the bad CGI actually made it to cinemas before being noticed.

This movie, I suspect, will be pushed to beat Top Gun: Maverick's total, so the CCP can manufacture a win over the United States. But I suppose they'll have to wait until Spring Festival 2023 for that now.

Warriors of Future will definitely cross $100 million today (day 63). I thought it would have been yesterday, but it only made $40,000 when it needed $50,000.

Here's an update before the weekend. It's currently Golden Week so there are some moves. Homecoming enters the chart and Warriors of Future crosses the century mark, but this has been a subdued Golden Week by normal standards. There's just one movie doing well, and it's not an uber-blockbuster. It will likely finish in the $200 million bracket.

Post Re: China Box Office
There does not appear to be a single new release next weekend (starting 14th October), which makes sense. The CCP wants the nation to focus on economic output after having seven days off for Golden Week, and especially because the economy is struggling. So the next new releases are on 21st October, and they are also absolute junk; Serendipity Love and The City Beautician. The CCP won't allow much to be released during this time, also, because it's the People's Congress where Dictator Xi will be given a third term, and everybody must be focused on being patriotic.

There's nothing interesting entering the market until November.
