RIP Chinese box office in the first half of this year.

RIP Chinese economy, actually.

RIP global economy, if you think about it.

The theaters on China are back in full force with not much age distancing measures I heard. They consider themselves free of this virus.

Not sure where you heard that, for the coming weekend all cinemas in Shenzhen are still just playing at about 65% capacity (up from the 35% from last week though).

Friends and neighbours though they are definitely not reliable source for these kind of information. 65% is still a good amount of theaters.

So...

Jurassic World: Dominion is up to $154 million after its seventh weekend (or 45 days). It is the highest-grossing Hollywood title of the year. The first Jurassic World made about $210 million. It won't come close. Fallen Kingdom made even more.

Lighting Up the Stars is over $230 million, with no end in sight. But it's strangely absent from the worldwide chart on Box Office Mojo.

And Water Gate Bridge (aka: The Battle at Lake Changjin 2) just got bumped down to sixth (and soon seventh) on the 2022 worldwide chart by Minions: Rise of Gru.

Surprisingly, with no notice or any build-up, and amid more COVID flareups ... The Lost City will be dumped in cinemas this Friday.

China has another big hit on its hands. The sci-fi comedy Moonman has a two-day gross of $101 million (including Thursday previews), so it's looking at over $150 million opening weekend.

The Lost City will have around a $200k opening weekend. It wasn't really given a chance, though, with so few showtimes.

Jurassic World: Dominion is currently at $156 million after eight weekends in release.

Minions: The Rise of Gru has been approved for release, on 19th August. Universal seem to be in Dictator Xi's good books.

Let's do a yearly gross list for China, and in true Chinese fashion we'll copy the format from another thread (sorry Corpse). It'll be a work-in-progress; adding movies when I come across them rather than having a comprehensive list from the get-go, though I think this is all the main ones:

Top Grossing Films: 2022
Gross in USD [Days In Release] - Film

$638.00 million [169] - The Battle at Lake Changjin II
$500 million ↨

$414.59 million [29] - Moonman
$392.76 million [F] - Too Cool to Kill
$300 million ↨

$253.26 million [64] - Lighting Up the Stars
$204.34 million [F] - Nice View
$200 million ↨

$157.01 million [F] - Jurassic World: Dominion
$145.86 million [F] - Boonie Bears: Back to Earth
$105.27 million [50] - Detectives vs. Sleuths
$100 million ↨

$89.79 million [207] - Sniper
$85.32 million [F] - Only Fools Rush In
$83.56 million [22] - Warriors of the Future
$72.76 million [F] - Another Me
$50 million ↨

$33.90 million [8] - New Gods: Yang Jian
$19.50 million [6] - Minions: The Rise of Gru
Other Notables ↨

Minions: The Rise of Gru opens today. It earned $400k in previews from only 527 showings.

I'm not sure what the movie could do but Minions as a brand is fairly popular in China. But as popular as they might be, only Despicable Me 3 broke out with $158 million. The second Despicable Me movie only made $58 million, and Minions made $68 million.

Well, Minions: The Rise of Gru's opening day was $3.2 million, which still put it third for the day behind Moonman's fourth Friday and a new release, New Gods: Yang Jian. It's the summer holidays right now, so it will most likely increase on Saturday and again on Sunday. Still, it's hardly going to push the film over a billion worldwide.

Chinese censors changed the ending to Minions: The Rise of Gru. In their edit, Gru becomes one of the good guys and lives happily ever after with his three girls, and Wild Knuckles was caught by the authorities and jailed, lol.

Because you can't let children think baddies get away. Authorities always win! And they need to start normalizing families having three children to boost their stagnating population! And all girls, of course, so they can each also have three kids. This is how little the Chinese government thinks of its people. They're all pawns that can't think for themselves.

Another random China release; The Mauritanian came out two days ago. Another film to make America look bad.

I don't think China will ever allow another foreign import that makes the West look powerful, heroic, good, etc. Every release is a political opportunity. They have to release 32 foreign movies per year, and they're going to try their hardest to make all 32 either make the U.S. look bad or edit them to support local policies (like they just did with Minions: The Rise of Gru).

Love the chart format!

And China becoming so selective, and even editing the films they do allow to be released, is annoying. Makes it difficult to really compare the OS/WW totals of today's films to those from earlier years.

Well its not like any Chinese movies ever get wide releases in the US.

Though with Top Gun couldn't they spin it like "the American Military is run by idiots and without Maverick that mission would have failed a millions times over"?

Not because they're restricted from doing so. It's because the distributors here know it would be a waste of money to go wide. They get platform releases all the time, and they make what they make. If there was ever more interest, they would expand, and they have. The most nationalistic Chinese flick ever made, Wolf Warrior 2, came out in the U.S. and made $2.7 million. It even expanded, but once the small Chinese diaspora had seen it, its run was more or less over. But it's still allowed to play in America because it's a free market. China is not, at all.

The Japanese film, Belle, opened yesterday. It seems to be called its full title in China; Belle: The Dragon and the Freckled Princess. Its opening day was $660,000, so including previews it's now at $710,000. It opened in 5th place behind Minions: The Rise of Gru's second Friday of $1.38 million (cume: $19.5 million).

Moonman tops the box office, still making almost $3 million a day after nearly a month. It's up to $414 million.

Other new releases aren't worth mentioning, but one is A Dog Named Palma from Russia. It isn't uncommon to see Russian movies playing in China, but they don't do very well. First day is just $260,000.

With Chengdu (population: 21 million) in complete lockdown and other cities like Shenzhen (17+ million) and Dalian (6 million) in partial lockdowns, the box office will take a hit this weekend. Already I can see some films being hit really hard, especially Belle: The Dragon and the Freckled Princess, which is down 97% from last Friday. There are also no major new releases.
