BOM does update most international charts quite regularly now, they just foolishly don't update the links to them, heh.

Hmm, how close will Avatar get to Howl's Moving Castle? The wekend numbers are ahead and the gap between the two shrunk by almost $5 million since last week.

I think $185+ million is becoming possible...

What Avatar will need to do is have it's weekdays beat it's weekend numbers. That's why films have such huge legs, it's the weekdays which match or are greater than the weekend for films with longevity.

April 17th will be interesting, and we'll likely know where it's going to finish after that week/weekend.

Wherever it will end up now, I think Avatar's performance is probably the 3rd-most impressive ever in Japan, behind Spirited Away and Titanic. Especially considering the slight decline of Hollywood films' sucess in recent years.

If Admissions weren't going to be so much lower than the other $150m+ films (less than half Spirited Away, 50% less than Titanic, and likely around 40% less than Howl/Ponyo/Potter1/Bayside2) , I might put it in the Top 3. But there's also The Last Samurai which opened over $8m on 57 screens and finished over $119m. BOM is low on it, no way was it pulled from theaters after being No.3 the previous week.

But it had a huge advantage of starring a Japanese actor and dealing with Japanese themes.

I'd say Avatar's tickets ($26 avg) being almost double the avg. ticket balances that out. Admissions are "only" going to be around 10m. While nothing to sneeze at, films that grossed in the low $100m had that.

But then again, The Last Samurai was released during the time in which Hollywood movies were doing much better.

If Avatar can gross over Y15.5b, I'd consider it being the 3rd most impressive run.

Well it grossed approx Y1.3b in 2 weeks. If it stays at this pace for about 5-6 more weeks, I guess Y15.5b is possible. Don't you think ToyCorpse?

I think so, but I want to wait to see how it performs this week first. I don't think losing Best Picture will hurt it exactly, but post-Oscar week might change the course of it's run (as interest in the Oscars was big this year). I could see it lose some screens a bit faster now, and I can imagine some chains have waited until the Oscars to decide to keep it longer, renew contracts, etc., and some interest among the public could die down some.

Slumdog opened on twice as many screens (a month after the BP win though), and grossed just over $1m it's first weekend and finished with $11m, according to BOM. The Hurt Locker should see a surge (No.1 on Eiga now) for the next few weeks seeing as it just opened very well the weekend it won BP. $10m is probably a fair enough goal, imo.

As reported last month, Shueisha is publishing 3 million copies of the 57th volume of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga on Thursday. This record first printing tops not only the previous manga record of 2.85 million copies set by the 56th volume last year, but also the all-time Japanese record of 2.9 million copies made by J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2004. The first 56 volumes of One Piece have sold 185.6 million copies since 1997.

Update:

Quote:

One Piece sets all-time record

The 57th volume of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga sold 1,690,932 copies in its first week of sales — a new record in first-week sales for any book sold in Japan. The 57th volume's sales topped the previous record-holder, the 56th volume's 1,363,868 copies which were sold in the first week of December. Shueisha printed a record 3 million copies of the 57th volume, which is more than any book ever had in its first printing in Japan.

By comparison, Volume 57 sold more copies than the combined admission sales for the Top 10 at the Box Office this past weekend, which was a big weekend.

If Eiichiro Oda decides to produce/direct the next One Piece film like he did for the first time with Movie 10 Strong World this past December, which grossed 4x the previous biggest film in the series, despite less screens, broke the opening PTA record, became Toei's biggest film, it could potentially become an even bigger hit next year or so.

Was The Cove released in Japan?

As Lecter said, it's scheduled for a June release playing in 20-30 theaters.

There's a great deal of controversy surrounding the film as one might expect:

Quote:
The Japanese fishing village featured in "The Cove," which won an Oscar for best documentary, defended its practice of hunting dolphins Monday as a part of a long tradition.

The movie, which mixes stunning underwater shots of gliding dolphins with covertly filmed grisly footage of their slaughter, also claims that dolphin meat is laden with toxic mercury.

Taiji, a quiet fishing village on the rocky coast of southwestern Japan, kills only a small fraction of the dolphins hunted by the country each year. But it has long been a target of environmentalists and animal lovers because it uses a method called "oikomi," in which the dolphins are chased into shore, making the hunt more visible.

Though few residents said they had seen the film, there was universal disgust at its portrayal of the town. Taiji proudly bills itself as "Whale Town" and a main bridge is adorned with dolphin statues, but after years of what locals see as unfair treatment by the foreign press, few are willing to talk on the record. One young dolphin trainer turned and ran away when asked for her opinion.

"This is a close-knit group of fishermen. The more they feel squeezed, the more they will close off to outsiders. They won't stop this hunt because of such pressure," said Hisato Ryono, a local councilman who appears in the film.

The mayor's office handed out a statement that said Taiji's dolphin hunt is lawful and argued that the movie contained statements that were not based on science. Otherwise, most town officials refused to talk.

"There are different food traditions within Japan and around the world," the statement read. "It is important to respect and understand regional food cultures, which are based on traditions with long histories."

Director Louie Psihoyos said "The Cove" isn't meant to bash Japan but that it is "a love letter to the Japanese people."

"Our hope is the Japanese people will see this film and decide themselves whether animals should be used for meat and for entertainment," Psihoyos said backstage after receiving the Oscar at the Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

The town of Taiji kills about 2,000 dolphins every year for their meat. Some are captured and sold to aquariums.

The Japanese government, which allows about 19,000 dolphins to be killed each year, acknowledges that dolphin meat is contaminated with mercury, but denies it's dangerous unless consumed in huge quantities.

In September, amid an international outcry following the screening of the movie abroad, villagers released several dozen dolphins that had been caught. But locals say they will continue with the hunt.

The movie has not yet been released in Japan, but it will start showing here in June at 20 to 30 theaters nationwide. It was shown at the Tokyo International Film Festival in October, where viewers gave it mixed reviews.

Still, most Japanese don't know about the annual dolphin hunt, and dolphin meat is hardly eaten in Japan.

Takeshi Kato, president of Unplugged in Tokyo, which is distributing the film in Japan, said the faces of dozens of Taiji residents are being blurred out for the Japan version to ward off possible lawsuits under Japanese law that protects privacy.

"Our purpose is not to attack the people of Taiji," he said.

"If this movie can serve as an opportunity for people to find out, it would be great," he told The Associated Press on Monday.

He said he hopes the film will help open the debate in Japan on preserving nature, including dolphins and whales.

"Receiving the top award in the movie industry will work as a big plus for our efforts to show this movie in Japan," he said.

Ryono, the local councilman, and Tetsuya Endo, an associate professor at Health Sciences University of Hokkaido, both appear in the current version of the film and say they were interviewed under false pretenses. Both say they have asked the filmmakers to remove footage, and Endo says he hasn't ruled out legal action.

"I feel that they should have declined the award," Endo said.

Psihoyos was unable to get permission to access the cove where the dolphins are killed. Fishermen blocked it with barbed wire and fences. So he and his film team secretly broke into the restricted area - which is in a national park - at night to set up cameras that capture the slaughter.

Japanese government officials have defended the fishermen's right to hunt dolphins and called the film unbalanced.

"There are some countries that eat cows, and there are other countries that eat whales or dolphins," said Yutaka Aoki, fisheries division director at Foreign Ministry. "A film about slaughtering cows or pigs might also be unwelcome to workers in that industry."

The film is the 7th most searched for right now on Eiga.com, but it has a very low "will see" rating of 2.2/5.

Eiga's Most Popular Films - 3/13

1. The Hurt Locker
2. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2010)
3. Hana No Ato

4. Avatar
5. Sherlock Holmes
6. Liar Game Movie: The Final Stage
7. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lighting Thief
8. Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, March 19
9. The Blind Side
10. Nodame Cantabile Movie: Final Score II, April 17

Blue - Opening this Weekend.
Red - Future Release.

Both The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2010) and Hana No Ato appear to be in great shape this weekend, with the former looking to perform a little better than I originally thought. It likely has a fanbase from the highly acclaimed Animated Version a few years back. Sherlock Holmes also looks good.

Cirque Du Freak has been pretty popular for months now, and I'm not exactly sure why. I guess it could be well known due to the manga version of the novels. It's been looking quite strong for months now (it almost has as many ratings as Avatar).

The 14th is White Day also, which could effect the box office in some way. White Day being the opposite of Valentine's Day. Men give gifts on Valentine's Day, while Women give gifts on White Day.

3 Howl's Moving Castle ¥22b
4 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ¥20.3b
5 Princess Mononoke ¥19.3b

7 Bayside Shakedown 2 ¥17.35b
8 Ponyo ¥15.5b
9 Avatar ¥14.1b
10 The Last Samurai ¥13.7b

Yet another strong week for Avatar. It's going to challenge Bayside Shakedown 2 and Princess Mononoke in USD the weekend of March 27-28. And it'll reach Ponyo the first week or two of April. Howl's Moving Castle is becoming a better comparision now. In it's 13th week, which Avatar is about to enter, Howl grossed approx. $4m staying flat during that weekend. It's probably going to depend on how Alice in Wonderland effects it on April 17th whether it can reach Howl which it has a good chance at the moment with these drops. Though there is also Clash of the Titans before Alice opens, too, and Avatar's remaining 3D screens make up about 75% if it's total count.

Sherlock Holmes opened to $4.6m. Nice opening (not sure if it was No.1 for the weekend yet) which should lead to a total in the high teens with an shot at $20m.

50/50 chance I'd say, the other being China.

And another great thing about Avatar's box-office is that all of it counts towards the 2010 box office in Japan, unlike several other countries where what it made in 2009 was included in the 2009 yearly totals.

New trailers for two highly anticipated sequels (one being perhaps the most) have been released: Bayside Shakedown 3 and Nodame Cantabile Part II.

Bayside Shakedown: The Movie 3

Quote:
The third film again follows Shunsuke Aoshima (Yuji Oda), who’s recently been promoted to Chief Detective only to be saddled with eight difficult cases including murder, burglary, and a serial bomber.

“Bayside Shakedown: The Movie 3” will be released in Japan on July 3, 2010.

Nodame Cantabile: The Movie II

Quote:
The new film picks up where the first installment left off—Nodame (Juri Ueno) and Chiaki (Hiroshi Tamaki) mutually decide that it would be for the best if they parted ways for a while so Nodame can practice for an upcoming competition. However, when things don’t go her way, she gets impatient and depressed. While Nodame is away, Chiaki’s former pianist Rui Son (Yu Yamada) returns to take her place. To make matters worse, Rui and Chiaki are set to play the song Nodame dreams of playing with Chiaki herself: Ravel’s “Concerto in G Minor”.

“Nodame Cantabile Saishu Gakusho Kouhen” will open in Japan on April 17, 2010.

March 13-14th Est Admission Rankings, Top 7

1 1 Doraemon 30th Movie: Nobita's South Sea Adventure - Battle The Mermaid King 2
2 - Sherlock Holmes
3 2 Liar Game Movie: The Final Stage 2
4 4 Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief 3
5 - Did You Hear About The Morgans 1
6 5 The Princess and the Frog 2
7 3 Avatar 12

http://sparx.blog4.fc2.com/

It surprises me that neither Hana No Ato (could be limited) or The Girl Who Leapt Through Time made the top 7 (at the moment, these are estimates) in admissions. And Morgans performing well is also surprising. Can't wait to see more full numbers.

Edit - White Day may have inflated Morgans (is it a date movie? ).

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box Office (2010); March 13-14th

March 13-14th Rankings:

1 1 Doraemon The Movie: Nobita's Mermaid Legend Toho 2
2 NEW Sherlock Holmes WB 1
3 2 Liar Game The Final Stage Toho 2
4 3 Avatar FOX 12
5 4 Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief FOX 3
6 9 The Hurt Locker Broadmedia Studio 2
7 NEW Did You Hear About The Morgans? SPE 1
8 5 The Princess and the Frog Disney 2
9 NEW Hana No Ato Toei 3
10 8 About Her Brother Shochiku 7

Doraemon - 1b (11m) total after two weeks. By comparison, last year's film was at $7.5m after 2 weeks and finished with about $25m. So $40m isn't out of the question here.
Sherlock Holmes - 330m (3.7m) 2-day.
The Hurt Locker - 179% increase (I think), so about 1.2/1.3m weekend.
Hana No Ato - 31m (335-350k)

The 30th overall film in the Doraemon movie series is very likely to become the biggest film in the franchise.

To beat Sherlock Holmes (4.6m est weekend, but that COULD be 3day and not 2day since it opened on a friday) it needed to drop under 25%. But I don't know yet if the 4.6m figure for Sherlock was for the 3day long weekend or the 2day.

Admissions vs Rankings differed greatly this week. The Hurt Locker (surging after winning BP as expected) missing the top 7 in Admissions, yet ranks 6th, Avatar being 7th in admissions, but 4th in ranking.

Did You Hear About The Morgans? opened much better than I was expecting.

And I thought Hana No Ato may have been in limited release since it wasn't in the top 7 admissions for the weekend yet having strong signs, and it appears it was in limited release since this is it's 3rd week. First weekend in the Top 10.
