It also became the highest-grossing Ultraman film ever in just three days. Over the weekend frame, the film sold 450,000 admissions across 401 screens, and 641,802 admissions in its first three days of release. I don't want to call it reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion (~$40 million) quite yet, but there's a good chance it'll either come close or hit it. The last May release to achieve blockbuster status was 2012's Thermae Romae, so if it manages it, it'd be a major achievement done for the first time in a decade. >Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween held well in its fifth weekend. Unless Toho does something in an attempt to boost it later in its run, we can rule out it breaking the franchise record now though. I'm also a little doubtful on it getting up to ¥9 billion again, but it should at least reach ¥8.5 billion (~$67 million) or so on over 6 million admissions. So, it *appears* that the franchise probably peaked in 2018/2019, but for an annual franchise, 25 films later, to be posting numbers this high is insanely impressive, and obviously unprecedented. >Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness drops hard in its second weekend, but I was actually expecting a bit worse since it opened on the tail-end of Golden Week which boosted its first five days in release. It should be safely able to reach ¥2 billion from here, but not too much higher (maybe like ¥2.1 billion). ¥2 billion is pretty difficult for any Marvel/DC film to reach (Spider-Man/Avengers aside), and it'll outgross the original, so pretty nice success here. It'll also become Disney's first film in 2.5 years to reach the ¥2 billion mark. >Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is starting to slow down now, and any slim chance it had of getting to ¥5 billion are gone (they technically were last week). However, and this is a biggie, it outgrossed Spider-Man: No Way Home to become the highest-grossing Hollywood film since 2019 in Japan! Becoming the first Harry Potter/Wizarding World film to miss the blockbuster milestone is unfortunate, though, and makes Hollywood's 2022 outlook more grim. Jurassic World: Dominion is their only likely blockbuster now, not accounting for Avatar: The Way of Water in December. Maybe Top Gun: Maverick can do Mission: Impossible numbers though and make a play at the milestone, but that won't be easy. *Fingers crossed* |

I haven't really had time to work on it. I have a Biggest OW Chart for almost every month except for the few weaker months, which May is one of. Shin Ultraman achieved the biggest May OW in 11 years this weekend, if that tells you anything about how weak May openers have been over the past decade. Here's a quick preview of the biggest openings since I have them readily available: Biggest May Opening Weekends (1998-) ¥1.471 billion ($12.2 million) / 1,186,413 - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) ¥1.258 billion ($11.3 million) / 923,711 - The Da Vinci Code (2006) ¥1,226 billion ($9.6 million) / ???,??? - Spider-Man (2002) ¥1.225 billion ($12.9 million) / 987,387 - Rookies (2009) ¥1.208 billion ($10.1 million) / 921,341 - Spider-Man 3 (2007) ¥1.205 billion ($14.8 million) / 773,184 - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) ¥965.3 million ($8.5 million) / 674,345 - Umizaru: Limit of Love (2006) . . ¥703.3 million ($5.5 million) / 450,000 - Shin Ultraman (2022) And this should be the Top 7. I'll do a bit of research into the month over the week and update it. I think Shin Ultraman will make the Top 10. There might be a one or two films between it and Umizaru, but I don't think they'll be three or more. Since Golden Week begins on April 29th, many big films avoid May for an April slot so they can benefit from the holiday period. This has been a huge factor in May not having any big openings over the past 11+ years. GW didn't seem quite as big a factor before 2010 or so. |

May can produce big openings, it's just that studios avoid it. Passing up Golden Week (April 29-May 5) is unwise if it can't be helped (Conan becoming so big makes it a little tricker to schedule in recent years too). And after GW ends, the rest of May and June are largely dead months in Japan as between holiday period months. Summer Vacation begins in mid-July and Obon Festival is in August, so May and June are pretty weak since casual moviegoers, students, etc., are often too busy. If you plan to release a tentpole between April and August, then May is your last option, followed by June (since it's a bit closer to summer). However... If the schedule is noticeably weak in May/June, some films can benefit in the emptier market than compete in the much more crowded months of April, July and August. Like Ultraman is and should. Pirates 1 opened in August, and Pieates 2 and 5 opened in July. |

Also, it's crazy that even if A2 does put out a solid sequel performance and becomes the first hollywood uber-blockbuster in a while (say it does a flat 10b) it'll translate into a massive drop from the first one for its international numbers. 10b would only be a 36% drop in yen, but it would be a...59% drop in usd? Brutal. So to even come close it would have to dramatically outperform the first film, something like 24b to match the first one's 15b. Currency exchange is nuts sometimes. |

I would hope the exchange rate becomes a little more favorable in the next 6-7 months, but bouncing back after a 20 year low is going to take much longer than that, I feel. Hollywood films (or any film, but local films don't care about USD figures) may be able to perform as well as or even better than their predecessors in JPY/Admissions, but that's still going to be a huge decline in USD. And as you mentioned, films will need to see huge gains in JPY (which is very unrealistic) to just match their predecessors in USD. |

Shin Ultraman's weekdays are looking promising. Could end up being ~80% of its opening weekend (Sat/Sun), which is pretty impressive by itself, but even more so for a film that could have had some frontloading due to a fanbase/fanbases. So, so far I don't really see any hints of it being exactly frontloaded even if the Sunday drop was a bit high. If the second weekend drop is below 30%, chances are pretty good for it to make a run at ¥5 billion. |

They'll probably be a double-feature admission option at some locations. I don't know anything about the franchise and films above though. Are the films entirely different, a Part 1 and Part 2 thing, or just some differences in each film? The only time I can recall two different films being released at the same time, and clearly the most high-profile/widest release, was the first Pokemon Black & White movie in 2011(?). There were two different films released on the same day, but rather than splitting the box office, the individual film admissions and earnings were combined. The two films had minor differences (some different Pokemon, a different villain and maybe supporting character, etc.), so it might be a different case than two entirely different films. |

Early estimates I've seen point to Shin Ultraman around ¥2.03 billion. (~1.3 million attendance). ¥4 billion seems likely, but is ¥5 billion still in the cards? |

¥4 billion, I believe, is about as close to a lock now as you can get unless some very unusual decline happens in the next week or two. Most films manage to at least double up on their two-week totals in the market, so if it's above ¥2 billion now, that puts it a good position to exceed ¥4 billion. ¥5 billion is still possible, but probably remains at 50/50 for now. As mentioned, May/June are generally poor due to no holiday support, so it will have to rely largely on the interest of its fanbase and typical moviegoers to keep it going versus the casual moviegoers who rarely go to theaters outside of holiday periods. |

Very cool Shin Ultraman's performance. I kinda like these surprises in the BO. Also as I can see a respectable OW for Gotoubun no Hanayom movie, it managed to increase on every day, what can we expect for it ? DC held quite good, this is normal o it's besting previous entries ? |

Strong Saturday, yep. Don't think it has uber-blockbuster potential right now (few openings really ever guarantee ¥10 billion), unless you meant ¥5 billion and not ¥10 billion because JW3 won't get to ¥10 billion (neither of its predecessors did). But the opening for Top Gun 2 here should be high enough to give us another potential ¥5 billion earner. For reference, most of the Mission: Impossible films gross around this in the market. And Hollywood desperately needs a ¥5 billion hit, it's been 2.5 years... No Way Home and Fantastic Beasts 3 did pretty great, but ultimately missed. And apologies for not posting last weekend's actuals. It's been a busy week, to say the least. I'll post them and this weekend's on Monday/Tuesday. |

Very good. Pretty comparable 3-day to No Way Home (a little below) and Fantastic Beasts 3 (a little above), but it shouldn't be as frontloaded as them (not to say those were frontloaded, well, NWH was), so this *should* become Hollywood's first film in 2.5 years to reach ¥5 billion (~$40 million), and figure it can do a little better, maybe like ¥5.5/6 billion (~$45-50 million). It won't have any real holiday support in its first 50 days or so, so that's unfortunate, BUT... sometimes a bigger film can counter the lack of holiday support from less competition in the deader months like May and June. |
