Post subject:  Re: Japan Box-Office: Golden Results; 2021 Charts Updated!

It likely would have resulted in it hitting ¥40 billion today, as it also would have picked up additional screens/showings for the day (at least) to accommodate the extra business. But, it's still going to exceed ¥40 billion in a couple weeks, so end result will be the same regardless.

Also, definitely can't take for granted that this minor delay as beening the only speed bump over a near 7-month run in the middle of a pandemic. Reaching ¥40 billion a little later given so many chances of other things affecting the run in all that time is, honestly, a miracle.

Cases were noticeably higher back in December/January, and something happening to theaters during that time would have been a pretty big blow for example. And there was a good chance that some stricter measures were going to go into effect during Spring Break, but that didn't happen either, and if they had, it would have spoiled the studio's push at the time (5th/6th giveaway events + Dolby expansion) to get it to the ¥40 billion milestone that's almost here now.

06 (05) ¥x12,362,360 ($114,000), -51%, ¥368,272,660 ($3.4 million), Nomadland (Disney) WK7
07 (06) ¥x8,966,950 ($82,000), -58%, ¥785,324,950 ($7.2 million), Signal: The Movie (Toho) WK6

Note: Besides the Top 2 films, the other holds are estimated since last weekend's full actuals weren't released due to the Golden Week holiday period.

So, clearly, the box-office is hitting a dry period now that the holidays are over, theaters remain closed in the two busiest prefectures (in addition to 4 others), and several delays in recent weeks due to the SOEs that drag the Top 10 down. May is going to be very uneventful, so expect to see the Top 4/5 films go mostly unchanged for awhile, while the lower ranking films will probably earn some extra weeks in the Top 10 as well.

But we shouldn't be complaining of the slowdown given how strong the box office has been for the past 8/9 months. I think we can accept a month of slowdown and delays.

Corpse, the giveaway weekend you were talking about yesterday for Demon Slayer has been postponed ? Or completely canceled and there will be no more event ?

It was only, presumably, for one-day only (May 10th) as it was advertised as the Rengoku Birthday Commemorative giveaway event. Technically, it's been postponed due to the SOEs, but the postponement announcement was prior to the SOEs being extended until May 31st. So it won't happen before then, meaning they'll have just 15 days before the home video release to reschedule it.

They could still reschedule it in the beginning of June, assuming the SOEs are lifted on May 31st, but given how close this will be to the home video release, I would bet they'll possibly tie it in with the home video release in some way. Perhaps by creating another expensive limited edition release with the birthday illustration giveaway included, or maybe as a retailer exclusive edition that could include it as well.

Lawson stores have already announced that if you buy the movie at their locations, they'll have a limited edition with some sort of book and exclusive towel. So partnering with various retailers to offer limited editions with their own exclusive items included with the home video release to further boost sales is reasonable as diehard fans would potentially buy multiple copies.

Was hoping Eva had enough left in the tank to hit $80m USD, but I guess those chances evaporated a couple weeks ago. Still, can't fault that performance at all.

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/08-09); Charts Update

Its performance is way more impressive than its USD total may indicate, at least compared to its predecessor (released in 2012).

It has earned 58% MORE in JPY, but "just" 20% more in USD due to the difference in the exchange rates. 2011 and 2012 were the two strongest years ever (since 1971 at least) for the Yen compared to the Dollar, so USD totals were very, very bloated in those two years. You could reach $100 million with less than ¥8 billion throughout the second half of 2011, and for the better part of 2012.

Demon Slayer would be between $480-520 million in Japan alone under the 2011/2012 exchange rates. :funny:

I'll post the Evangelion Box Office History data here shortly since the finale film is approaching its end. However, that said, since several films have been delayed this month because of the SOEs, and with Evangelion being the third best performer right now, it's probably going to have a respectable late run and could finish a little higher than expected from this.

Evangelion Box-Office History

OPENINGS:
¥1.177 billion ($10.8 million) / 760,882 admissions - Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (2021)

TOTALS:
¥8.35 billion ($76.5 million) / 4.47 million admissions - Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (2021) [9 Weeks in Release]
¥5.30 billion ($64.0 million) / 3.85 million admissions - Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo (2012)

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time was almost subtitled "You Can (Not) Release" because it was delayed 7 times I believe (2013, 2015 (or 2014?), 2018, 2019, 2020, and twice in 2021). :mer:

I don't have opening weekend data for the 1990s films. Weekend data pre-1998 is pretty scarce.

Thanks for sharing. Hadn't realized End of Evangelion was a nice little success in its own right at the time (I've probably seen it 10x at this point).

Our press reported today that Russian drama Palma (ハチとパルマの物語, Hachi to Palma no Monogatari) already has more than $500k in presales two weeks before its release (May 28th). Already 45 000 tickets sold. Some japanese producer is talking about the new record for presales. Is there any way to confirm it?

Indeed. Thank you. Edited the original post to include the updated total. And a small independent film debuted in #8 as well. For the next several weeks, we may see a small opener here or there actually rank inside the bottom of the Top 10 since their numbers are typically released until Tuesday or Wednesday.

It's a Japan/Russia co-production, right?

It's being released by Tokyo Theaters, Co., and has a preliminary theater count of 81. I didn't check all 81 theaters, but the dozen or so I checked don't have online reservations up yet either because many places have suspended them until the day-of sales right now (in case more SOEs are declared last minute), and/or the screening schedule just hasn't been updated to May 28th yet.

Unfortunately, I don't have any presale information since I can't find any locations with reservations available yet. 45,000 tickets in presales would be very impressive at this stage though, especially for a smaller release that's currently in under 100 theaters (could expand to/above that after the SOEs are scheduled to end on May 31st). Not disputing the report as I really don't know, and don't really understand how it (or any film) has any presales yet unless they're through the distributor or something. But all theaters in Japan are reserve seating, which is largely unavailable in advance nationwide right now, so I don't know how any ticket sales purchased without a reservation would work. I mean, you could take the ticket to the theater and probably select your seat the day-of sales, it just seems unusual.

I watched the trailer, and it looks like a film that could do well. In general, heart-warming/emotional films with a story featuring a dog tend to attract a decent audience, especially if the ending is emotional. Emotional endings, especially if they're sad or bittersweet, are generally successful in the market, too.

So I'm guessing DS will add another 6 weeks inside Top 5 and Top 10 and even after home media release if the restrictions do not close it might continue because the numbers are too small anyways.

It's common for anime home video releases (among others) to have special items that you can only get from that store if you buy from there, so the only thing new here is that they're actually charging the audience for them directly instead of including it in their standard retail price. That's been getting somewhat common lately with print publication releases. I've seen titles at Animate/Gamers having things like tapestries/acrylic stands where they charge that in addition to the book price for the bundle.

I wouldn't say this would increase sales since people that would've bought multiple copies will still buy them and those that wouldn't won't.

My guess is that they're referring to the "advance ticket" where you buy a generic ticket at 1500 yen or so in advance and trade the stub in for a seat when you go to the theatre (or use the movie ticket code in that format now when buying online). That would make sense for "presales" but not quite in the phrase you're used to using. I've gotten a fair amount of them for bonus items in recent years and it's quite nice (and a little discount if you know you're going to see the film multiple times).

At least the headline didn't cheese out the article title for some clickbaits or something.

Also, 17 years old, so cut her some slacks. When I was that age, I still think that running in Naruto ninja style is effective and cool lmao

Well, proper breathing technique is a good practice for athletes (or anyone, really), for both the mind and body.

But I'm afraid the Naruto run has been deemed ineffective. Sorry. ;) Personally, I blow a lot of air into the body to expand the muscle structure and boost blood flow in order to get 110% out of daily activities. But it doesn't have much use outside of sex. So I call it sex-on gear, inspired by Luffy's second gear.
