Conan's last movie did 179,626 admissions at the usual locations (independents not included) on its opening Friday. About a third of that was after 7 pm though so given current restrictions this movie might not be able to replicate that performance. |

The Detective Conan films have become very strong after 7pm, largely because the 7pm-9pm timeframe is the strongest part of the day on Friday and Saturdays (excluding young skewing films). But nothing can really benefit from this now that most theaters in urban prefectures are closing by 8/9pm so the last showings at around 6pm. However, to counteract this, theaters are scheduling more showings throughout the mornings (by opening an hour or two earlier than normal) and the overall day with more screens being given than normal due to little/no Hollywood films to schedule. Evangelion 3.0+1.0 was still able to match its predecessor's opening weekend because of this. And in Detective Conan's case, it has more than double the number of showings for the day versus the last film, so it's probably like 3x more before 7pm, to counteract that disadvantage. This will be more noticeable on Saturday and Sunday though since Friday mornings/afternoons are the weakest of any day of the week. And ymblcza reported yesterday that Friday reservations at Toho Cinemas were already near 50,000, so factoring in the extra sales since then, and every other chain, chances are good it's likely close to half (if not higher, which I'd bet on it being) of last year's Friday admissions from just reservations. |

Also, this film might be very hard to predict this weekend since it's in SO many theaters. Almost all major openers are in 350-375 theaters, give or take a few. And the usual locations for these releases (typically 250-265 theaters, give or take a few) tends to account for around 70% of that total. Detective Conan broke the theater count record and is opening in 498(!) theaters, but the usual locations still account for somewhere around the normal 250/260. So there's A LOT of locations that are going to be unknown this weekend, and trying to predict anything from just using the usual locations (barely 50% of its total versus the normal 70% or so) is going to be unprecedented. It's not a simple matter of taking the extra theaters and applying the average admissions from the usual locations or anything. Its theater count is so high due to opening simultaneously on every premium format, making it the first film to ever do this. It's typically a process throughout a film's release to expand to premium formats, such as 4D/MX4D or Dolby Cinema. And most of these are unaccounted in the usual locations, so projecting their share is very difficult. |

A film just doing a third of Demon Slayer's business is top-tier level numbers that few films manage, and just half as well is all-time best level prior to Demon Slayer. |

Indeed just because Conan broke the theater record we shouldn't expect it do perform like DS. Half of DS will give it unprecedented record breaking numbers compared to rest of movies before DS. |

Big first day for Detective Conan, pretty easily beating the franchise record (over its predecessor). There are actually a few locations in/around Tokyo that are open until 10pm or so this weekend, namely Toho Shinjuku, which helped it put up some impressive sales after 8pm. Toho Shinjuku, in particular, is the busiest theater in the entire country, so it definitely added several thousand admissions after 8pm just by itself. This is great news for the weekend, strongly suggesting it'll open higher than its predecessors, thus setting a franchise record for the ninth-consecutive year and aiming to make a big impact on the all-time opening weekend list. This isn't 100% guaranteed, there's a possibility that the year-long delay with this release could have promoted a higher degree of frontloading, but that's an unknown at the moment, so it's more likely it'll surpass the last film's opening weekend. |

Also, regarding Demon Slayer. It's numbers are going to be dropping more and more for the rest of its run (Golden Week aside, where it'll get a boost). The initial drop today and likely over the weekend will be a little misleading, just like it was back when Evangelion hurt it in its first week before it recovered again. That said, do expect it to start its gradual decline down the charts, and it'll likely fall outside the top 10 in the next 2/3 weeks. And yes, ¥40 billion is still locked, so don't be worrying about every single days impact on that goal. It will get there in time. |

Yes, it's in the top 10. And don't worry if it does fall out once in awhile before permanently doing so in a few weeks. It's basically going to be coasting for the rest of its run, and each day doesn't really matter. It got to where it needed to be to reach ¥40 billion. These shouldn't continue to be questions moving forward. It just needs to play out now. |

Just some repeat viewers here and there (the Dolby Cinema expansion is still fairly fresh), and just some who just haven't seen it yet. Of course, neither group has very many people among them at this point, but they'll keep it alive until the home video release in June. And closing in on 29 million admissions is more than a lot. It's almost 5.5 million admissions higher than the previous all-time record, and almost 10 million admissions more than any film in history besides Spirited Away. |

It means the demand is strong enough to keep theaters reserve showtimes for the movie. For other international markets, I only see Demon Slayer has weekend showtimes, like in South Africa or Australia. |

Alright, so upon request and feedback, I'm going to track the latest Detective Conan film on a daily basis! And here are some notes and answers to likely questions: >The first week of estimating a film is the hardest and most inaccurate. Namely, it takes a bit of time to work out how a film typically performs on each day of the week (remember they behave uniquely from one another), and where its average ticket price ranges on overall and during each individual day. >This film is also unprecedented in that it's the first film to ever open simultaneously on every premium format, thus boosting its theater count to a new record level that's far beyond the norm (over 100 theaters higher). It's just going to take a bit of time to see how this effects the process of estimating it. >For this weekend specifically, I'll be using the last film to help in estimating it. Though I am making an immediate adjustment by increasing the previous film's avg. ticket price by ¥100 already since this year's film is playing on all the premium formats. Last year's film only had IMAX I believe, when it opened, later expanding to some of the others much later in its run. And yes, this is a new record opening day in the franchise, and suggests that its opening weekend will follow suit. But just some caution: This film was delayed from last April, meaning it's the first one since 1997 to NOT open every year. So there's the chance that it built up some extra demand that could have inflated its Friday a bit, which could potentially taken a little weekend business away. I don't think this is likely to have occurred, but since it's an unknown factor at the moment, we can't rule it out yet. In SHORT: Don't take the estimates during the first week to be very accurate. They could be, I'll try to read it as the days play out, but it simply takes a minimum of a full week to see how it'll perform on each day of the week before estimates become closer to the actual figures. |

Demon Slayer isn't the #1 movie of all time, having achieving this title by record margins, in those markets.  Japan is also generally a very backloaded market. Audiences don't rush to the theaters to see a movie in their early days. The average multiplier is almost 7, and films can go well beyond that. And big performers and/or WOM hits and such can easily play in wide release for up to half a year or more. |
