>Suzume holds well atop the box office, selling another 612,000 admissions over the weekend, bringing its three-week admissions up to 4,603,925. So far, it's running quite close to Shinkai's previous film, Weathering With You, having comparable second and third weekend holds while maintaining roughly the lead in total its had since opening weekend. However, that is about to change since Weathering entered Obon Festival in its fourth week so it's going to pull ahead quite soon, and I'm not too sure if Suzume will be able to catch it since it's still a month out from any holiday support.

The time of year also seems to be impacting its weekdays now too as holds have been barely good so far this week. This was the risk of opening in early November, but let's wait and see the numbers in a week or two. But it really needs to hold as strongly as possible since any slippage is going to expose it to screen/showtime cuts from the December openers (namely Slam Dunk this weekend, and then Avatar 2 two weeks later).

>That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Scarlet Bond, the first film in the popular light-novel/anime series, had nice debut in second place, selling 225,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 322 screens, and 313,094 admissions over its first three-days in release. I'm not 100% certain, but I believe this is Bandai Namco Arts' highest debut at the box office (at least as the solo distributor). This opening should get it around ¥1.5 billion, but being reasonably close to New Year could give it a boost so that it approaches and/or reaches ¥2 billion.

>Motherhood didn't open well, selling 64,000 admissions over the weekend on 340 screens, but since it opened well ahead of the weekend on Wednesday (national holiday), it's not all bad since it sold 172,391 admissions over its five-day opening. Still pretty bad, just noting the weekend number looks "worse" because of the early opening.

>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever saw another massive decline and is proving just as frontloaded as the other recent MCU films. They've always been among the most frontloaded films in Japan, but since Disney+, they've become even more frontloaded and are basically the most frontloaded franchise now (or at least fighting for that dishonorable spot with Kamen Rider). Probably likely to finish around ¥1.3 billion ($9-9.5 million). I'm now beginning to wonder if this added frontloadness of MCU films, and even Disney films in general, is because once the most interested check them out in the first couple weeks, everyone else just decide to wait for the Disney+ release.

>One Piece Film Red achieves a 17th consecutive weekend in the Top 5 thanks to an excellent hold, achieving the ninth biggest seventeenth weekend on record.

>Strange World... nothing to say except it's the worst opening for a Walt Disney animated film ever recorded. As for NOT on record... No opening weekend numbers are available for The Emperor's New Groove which debuted in 8th place in admissions, so it's possible Strange World came in above it, but I don't think that's so because the bottom half of the Top 10 is pretty weak right now. That'd only leave Home on the Range which failed to debut in the Top 10 altogether.

So yeah, can't be a more epic bomb than that! Across its 5-day opening (opening on Wednesday, a holiday), it only sold 62,998 admissions across 437 screens. Weekdays will be terrible as they are for younger-skewing films this time of year, and given it's awful opening, it'll suffer immediate screen/showtime cuts to where the weekends won't be able to help any. And, as mentioned above with Black Panther, Disney films have become frontloaded since I think some people just wait for the Disney+ release. Therefore... I'm only expecting a total around ¥150-175 million ($1.1-1.3 million).

I have a feeling that Suzume total gross will be either ¥10 billion or between ¥11-13 and b/c of that is will not beat Weathering With You total gross.

This upcoming weekend when the hugely anticipated Slam Dunk movie comes out Suzume will also enter the the top 100 grossing films in Japan. Corpse, do you think its likely either Saturday or Sunday Suzume joins the top 100?

I haven't estimated the dailies yet this week, so can't say with certain yet. I'll let you know when I get around to the Suzume Daily Tracker update though!

And yes, very much looking forward to how Slam Dunk does this weekend. Reservations are looking quite impressive right now, and I think some theaters have added several more showings (unless I missed this and some of them haven't gone live yet). Glad Toei has gone back to the traditional Saturday openings for their bigger films.

Suzume - Daily Tracker

11/11 (Fri.): ¥478.8 million ($3.4 million) / 339,417
11/12 (Sat.): ¥665.6 million ($4.8 million) / 467,788
11/13 (Sun.): ¥720.3 million ($5.2 million) / 514,843
11/14 (Mon.): ¥263.0 million ($1.9 million) / 195,000
11/15 (Tues.): ¥201.0 million ($1.4 million) / 150,000
11/16 (Wed.): ¥272.0 million ($2.0 million) / 203,000
11/17 (Thur.): ¥158.0 million ($1.1 million) / 121,000
11/18 (Fri.): ¥186.0 million ($1.3 million) / 166,000
11/19 (Sat.): ¥527.8 million ($3.7 million) / 382,000
11/20 (Sun.): ¥619.1 million ($4.4 million) / 447,000
11/21 (Mon.): ¥174.0 million ($1.2 million) / 135,000
11/22 (Tues.): ¥186.0 million ($1.3 million) / 137,000
11/23 (Wed.): ¥665.0 million ($4.7 million) / 532,000 *Holiday* / *All-Time Wed. Record*
11/24 (Thur.): ¥110.0 million ($0.8 million) / 82,000
11/25 (Fri.): ¥147.0 million ($1.1 million) / 109,000
11/26 (Sat.): ¥409.6 million ($3.0 million) / 297,000
11/27 (Sun.): ¥433.1 million ($3.1 million) / 315,000
11/28 (Mon.): ~¥119.0 million ($0.86 million) / ~92,000
11/29 (Tues.): ~¥103.0 million ($0.74 million) / ~76,000
11/30 (Wed.): ~¥133.0 million ($0.96 million) / ~102,000

Cumulative Total (20-Days): ~¥6,624,316,300 ($47.0 million) / ~4,873,925

**********

So, there's been a big change to last Wednesday (at least in revenue). I was ~¥85 million too high (compared to just 11,000 admissions) in estimating the week as a whole, and adjusting the weekdays (excluding Wed.) just doesn't make up that much of a difference, not even close. I adjusted them just slightly, but the bulk of that has definitely to be from the Wednesday. Which would make sense. Wednesday being a holiday (bringing out kids/families) and Toho Cinemas Day likely drove the avg. ticket price down a good deal more than I was predicting.

The recent weekdays have been a little lackluster. Not bad or anything, but a film that's going to make a run at ¥15-20 billion would be doing better than this. As mentioned in the weekend analysis though, weak weekdays is common this time of year and why November isn't an ideal month to release your major films in. Frozen II suffered from this back in 2019, and even if the weekends were quite strong, that just can't offset going through November and nearly all of December with poor weekdays.

Suzume has been able to keep its lead over Weathering With You since opening, though we'll see where the difference in release dates (questionable vs. optimal) makes a huge difference in the market since I expect Suzume will not just lose its lead this week, but likely fall too far behind to catch back up.

But we'll see! It is still relatively early, it's just signs aren't looking too good. Still, even if the worst cast happens, it's still going to gross over ¥10 billion. But whereas I was pretty confident it would end up closer to ¥15 billion than ¥10 billion last week, that's flipped this week, or is undetermined. I'm expecting ~¥12/13 billion now.

And ¥7 billion looks good for Saturday, Chaplainfan.

No problem. And quick note just in case any recent members or lurkers are unaware:

The Japan Box Office Year runs approximately from December-December (technically it's around the end of November, but the exact date varies by year), so the 2023 Box Office Charts will begin next week. So, The First Slam Dunk's OW this upcoming weekend will be on the 2023 charts (as well as any December release), and some late November films also get bumped to the 2023 total chart.
Thankfully, I believe the only release that's currently on the 2022 charts this year that'll get bumped to 2023 will be That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

This is why you see some December 2021 releases (like Jujutsu Kaisen 0, 99.9 Criminal Lawyer, and Matrix Resurrections, among a couple others) on the 2022 Charts.

Can't wait to see how Slam Dunk is gonna perform. I feel like it's going to need to deliver strongly and get good word of mouth to counteract whatever ambivalence that a lot of people seem to have about the CG since otherwise I think it might perform more similarly to the live-action adaptations of the likes of AoT rather than the Shonen Jump anime movies

A big opening is assured already as reservations are strong at most of the key locations. Don't want to guarantee an opening over ¥1 billion yet, but it looks like it's headed in that direction.

But yes, what happens after this weekend seems to be up in the air. CG over traditional animation and voice actor changes (although it has been over 25 years since the anime ended...) has caused some concern that WOM might be mixed.

Nice Thursday, up around 45-50% in admissions over last Thur. thanks to it being the first (discount day). It's possible it hit 5 million admissions on Thursday too, but I'd bet on Friday being the most likely case unless an official announcement comes in soon.

Damn did Independence Day (1996) have an insane average ticket price b/c in the top 100 grossing films in Japan list it appears over ¥10 Billion but on the 5 million admissions list it does not appear at all.

There are still a few major films without an admissions figure reported. Or rather, I haven't checked up on them in many years.

It likely did have a high avg. ticket price though as many films in the mid-late 90s did. General tickets were only ¥100 less than today, and I don't believe there were nearly as many discount opportunities for cheaper tickets. It also probably skewed heavily adult meaning most sales were full price (¥1800).

Wouldn't be shocked if it was around ¥1500 (or a bit more). Several films are around there from back then, and that's even higher than the avg. ticket price today excluding films that have high premium shares which can do ¥1500-1600.

I'd estimate 7-7.5 million admissions. I'll look into it again this weekend though. It's been a while.

This is probably going to lose all the advantage it has over Weathering with You this weekend, possibly even fall below it before we even get to it entering Obon. I guess something like 12-13b is a more likely finish now.

I'm also thinking ~¥12/13 billion. Which, of course, is still amazing. That'd be enough to win most years.

It's just going to look maybe a little disappointing, if it does indeed finish around there, due to the extraordinarily strong past ~11 months we've had with JJK0, TGM, and OPR all putting up Top 20 numbers (Top 10 in OP's case). That's very unusual for this market, and is, in fact, the first time 3 films in the same year (or 11/12 month period) have ever made the All-Time Top 20 since 2004. And that could even be 4 films if Suzume does a little above ¥13 billion, and maybe even 5 films in a 12 month period (which would be a record, at least in modern times 2000-) if Avatar 2 gets there too.

Note: Presales exclude Aeon Cinemas and some small chains, so they account for ~45% of the market.
Note 2: Presales counted up until ~30min to 1hr before the first showings begin (~07:00-7:30am).

Very good! Doesn't lock up a ¥1 billion+ opening (Endgame, a few spots higher, managed to miss it), but it's more likely than not.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: The First Slam Dunk - Sat. Presales
This is going to be a great first weekend start to the 2023 Japanese box office with Suzume joining the top 100 and The First Slam Dunk grossing possibly ¥1 billion on its OW.

After its Saturday, it'll easily break ¥1 billion now. Might be on track to hit ~¥1.2/1.3 billion.

And Suzume held very well, down around 15% vs last Saturday. The weekdays still put its upper potential in doubt, but strong weekends can still get it pretty high if they're consistent like this (or better) throughout December.

My Saturday (OD) Estimate:

¥690-750 million ($5.1-5.5 million) / ~500,000-525,000 admissions

Toei releases usually play strongly outside of the usual locations, so I'll be surprised if it missed 500,000 admissions (or came super close) for the day. Revenue is a little harder to determine since I'm not too sure on its audience. I mean, obviously the fans are the biggest share, but what of the ages? If it consists mostly of fans from the 90s, then it's probably in the ~30-50 age range I'd presume. This would suggest a relatively high avg. ticket price as it's the age group that typically has to pay full price due to little discount opportunities (no longer students = no discounts, not seniors yet = no discounts).

Anyone have an educated guess on who the core demo might be, assuming it's skewing towards one?
