If the numbers aren't broken down when released, it should be fairly easy to get a reasonable estimate by subtracting the weekend gross from the 3-day total to discover the Friday + Dolby Cinemas showings from 11/03-25. We won't know the exact figures Friday + Dolby Cinema showings, but we'll have a decent estimate for Friday and can then take that away from the Friday + Dolby Cinema showings to get pretty good idea of what those added up to.

Does that make sense? It did in my head as I was typing it!

It does

Yeah, he's been working on it since 2016. A little late of Deadline to report it now. :P

No release date/year has been given yet, but it's taking him 1 month to animate 1 minute of the film, so it's currently on pace for a ~2026 release (~10 years of production) if the schedule remains the same. (Could certainly see it slowing down further towards the end though.) If I remember right, he announced back in March or April that he was about half way finished with the project.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Arashi: Are You Ready?
I saw! Thanks for sharing. Average ticket prices for the weekend were even higher than expected at ¥3,108 ($27), not far from the high end adult prices of ¥3,300. So very few young people/students made up the audience. It was very likely ~95%+ adults (25/30+).

And those previews were double rough estimates. Remember that's just from 7 theaters, too. (Dolby exec. did say it sold out all its shows for the month though, and our system often mistakes sold out showings as nonexistent...) But even then, its 3-day still came in above ¥1 billion.

With the previews included (note: allowed and being reported for the the 3-day, but excluded from the 2-day weekend), it ranks pretty high on the biggest 3-day OW list. I'll post that a little later. Off the top of my head, I think it's the biggest 3-day (plus previews) for a Live-Action film since... Harry Potter 8? (But it might have edged it out.)

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Arashi: Are You Ready?
Encanto debuted in a distant second place to ¥152,000,000 ($1.3 million) / 118,000 admissions over the weekend frame, and ¥176,546,010 ($1.5 million) / 136,377 admissions over the 3-day. And it was given a very wide release, too, no boycotts.

This is way better than Raya and the Last Dragon, but still way, way down from Disney's former standard in the market. (This debut is about 1/3 or 1/4 of their standard result in the last decade or so.) Encanto will need to go almost a full month without any holiday support, so legs will probably be less than desired due to very low weekdays for younger-skewing films during this time (you can see how low its Friday was compared to its weekend above, for example). And, of course, I presume theaters will drop it the week it debuts on Disney+.

I would expect a sub-¥1 billion (>$9 million) finish. You do get the sense that Japanese audiences have abandoned Disney at the box-office in pretty significant numbers. Surely something by now would have connected. They just shouldn't be struggling/failing this badly with all of their films when other studios and the box-office are doing, and have been doing, perfectly fine for almost 1.5 years now.

*Opening Weekend impacted by the Great Tohoku Earthquake.
**Opening Weekend impacted by theater boycotts of same-day Disney+ releases.

Note (1): Dinosaur's Opening Weekend is a rough estimate based on its #1 weekend ranking in admissions, and reported highest opening weekend for a Walt Disney Animated film at the time, 230% higher than the previous year's Tarzan.
Note (2): No Opening Weekend data for Mulan, but it ranked 2nd in admissions, so it had a decent debut. Impossible to really say how high, but I'd guess around ¥150-200 million or so. It didn't earn ¥1 billion in income revenue in 1998, so its total wouldn't have been more than ~¥1.5 billion or so.
Note (3): No Opening Weekend data for The Emperor's New Groove, but it ranked 8th in admissions, so definitely a poor debut. Almost definitely (considerably) below ¥100 million.
Note (4): No Opening Weekend or Total data for Home on the Range, it missed the Top 10, so it was very low. I'd guess below Winnie the Pooh and possibly even Raya.
Note (5): No Opening Weekend data available for any films before 1998.

Note: No Total data available on any other Walt Disney Animation releases. No missing films released between 1980-1998 earned ¥1 billion+ in distributor income, so none of their totals would be above ¥1.5 billion or so (and likely much less, with the exception of possibly Mulan and Pocahontas, which may have been near there).

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Arashi: Are You Ready?
Encanto's opening was far below pre-pandemic WDAS numbers in several major markets, so I don't think this problem is exclusive to Japan. Perhaps being marketed as on Disney+ in a month is keeping a sizable audience group from going to see it in theaters. Last I checked, there were close to 2 million Disney+ subscribers in Japan (not accounting for families sharing one account).

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Arashi: Are You Ready?
Certainly a possibility. Disney+ is indeed popular in Japan, so if a film releasing on it has a primarily younger target audience, it makes sense that many families/parents are just waiting until they're available to stream at home with their children when both their schedules more easily allow it. And the Japanese don't rush out to theaters for films anyway, one of the reasons the market is very leggy, so waiting 30/45-days for a Disney film to debut on Disney+ isn't much of a wait, really.

And as a result of Japan's rapidly declining population, there are, of course, fewer and fewer kids/teens to attract to the theaters for certain films every year, which many/most animated Disney films rely on.

None of this has been as immediate a factor for younger-skewing local films because theatrical local releases aren't available to stream during their theatrical release. So films like Crayon Shin-chan (posting its usual numbers again earlier this year), and the currently playing Sumikko Gurashi, are still performing perfectly fine in part, perhaps, because there's no alternative option (and likely won't be anytime soon especially since many distributors also own theater chains in Japan).

>Arashi Anniversary Tour 5x20 FILM "Record of Memories" tops the last weekend of November, and delivers a mighty debut over its first three-days in wide release. Playing on 200 screens, it sold 149,512 admissions over the weekend frame (for a staggering average ticket price of ¥2,955), and moved 544,146 admissions over the 3-day when its Dolby Cinema previews throughout the month are also included. This all resulted in a massive ¥1,787,960,000 ($15.5 million) gross, which is the 7th Highest 3-Day Opening Weekend on Record, and the biggest for a live-action film since Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. The ample previews really boosted it to that achievement, it's not much different from the early/mid-00s films having previews sometimes equal/greater than their opening weekends also added to their debuts.

It's hard to say where the film is headed from here, but it did earn a pretty nice Monday (and Tuesday is looking decent/good so far), so it could develop surprisingly good legs that are in contrast to how it behaved from Friday to Sunday. It's pretty much exclusively attracting fans of the band, but there are many of them and a sizable number could wind up returning to theaters to watch it again and again since the band went on hiatus following this tour and their 20th anniversary, meaning this film is possibly as close to a "final concert" as possible.

>Encanto comes in second place, selling 118,000 admission over the weekend frame on 395 screens, and 136,377 admissions over the three-day. This is almost 2.5x above Raya and the Last Dragon, but the number speaks for itself--it's still significantly below what Disney is capable of in a market like Japan. Be it because it's coming out on Disney+ in 30 days in a very leggy market (suggesting plenty of Japanese are willing to wait that short time), the declining population (as the number of children drops more and more), or whatever else, Disney continues their very rough run in what was one of their best markets before the pandemic. Look for a total below ¥1 billion once again for the House of Mouse.

>Sumikko Gurashi: The Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night continues its surprisingly strong run, and as I mentioned last weekend, it's receiving a rare expansion next weekend as a result. So expect many more weeks of seeing this one hanging around. (I wouldn't be surprised if it manages to hold just inside the Top 10 come the lucrative New Year holiday period.)

>And, the Baton Was Passed is giving Warner Bros. a needed Fall success after Dune bombed. Its been doing well over the weekends, but even better over the weekdays, as it's becoming one of the leggier films of the year (multiplier is up to 8.18). Audience scores are also very high for the film. I wouldn't be overly surprised if it exceeds ¥1.5 billion ($13/14 million).

>Dear Evan Hansen bombed, but no surprise there. Its weekend frame gross is an estimate above, but it sold 47,202 admissions over the three-day across 220 screens.

>Eternals keeps falling hard, but... it exceeded ¥1 billion! This gives Disney their FIRST ¥1 billion earner since 2019, and it's their highest grossing film since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in Japan.

>I Don't Have Any Money Left in My Retirement Account! also exceeded ¥1 billion, largely thanks to its very impressive weekdays. I'm not going to go back and calculate how much its weekdays account for its total, but I'm pretty sure it's around two-thirds. The title (and low avg. ticket price) suggests its appealing very heavily towards senior citizens, and they mostly go to the theaters on the weekdays.

>Lastly, I'll close this Weekend's Analysis with No Time to Die. It's nearing the end of its run, and it had a serious of just so-so holds early on, but for the most part it's been holding relatively well in its later weeks and is going to finish perhaps just ¥50 million shy of Skyfall. So, not quite the sendoff for Daniel Craig, as it'll also finish below Spectre (his top grossing film), it's a respectable finish.

Lol, seeing an almost 1.8B 3days weekend(+previews) with only 400M coming from sat+sun is honestly funny. Is this the most skewed release ever from this aspect?

Yes, I believe so, at least in a decade+. Studios could no longer include previews in the Opening Weekends of films after 2010 (shenanigans, mostly from WB, to earn #1 debuts). And while there were a few cases of previews/midnights afterwards (on a much smaller scale), they pretty much became a thing of the past a couple years after that.

It's very, very rare for a film to receive previews/midnights now (basically not a thing), so we only get the actual/true 2 or 3-day opening weekend grosses.

So Arashi earning 40.5% of its "3-day" from its previews while it was playing exclusively in Dolby Cinema is certainly an unusual occurrence this day and age. This used to be pretty common in the early/mid-00s though. Many big Hollywood blockbusters would receive a weekend's worth of previews in wide release before they officially opened, and then all that would be added into its Opening Weekend (Sat/Sun) gross the following weekend. Those previews were very often just as high as Arashi's share or even great sometimes (50%+ of the opening weekend). But unlike back then when previews were included in the Sat/Sun gross, Arashi's previews cannot be added to its Opening Weekend (Sat/Sun), just the 3-day opening/total.

Same in Germany - I always complained about it on my website (some weekends were 8 days long) until the distributors agreed to separate previews/pre-opening days from the regular Thursday-Sunday weekend.
So in Germany you can't really compare opening weekends until 2009 with movies opening 2010 or later...

Yeah, that's the reason I made a separate All-Time Opening Weekends Chart that begins from 2008. Many impressive, big weekends from 2008-present can look "small" in comparison to those from the early/mid-00s when they're really not, and in some cases, are even more impressive--especially if an opening weekend after 2008 ranks high on the overall All-Time Chart. This is another reason why Demon Slayer breaking the 17-year-old OW record last year was insane, but more so because it practically doubled many of those older early/mid-00s OWs that had days of previews included in them too!

(Note: I chose 2008 and not 2009/2010 because no major weekends on these charts between 2008-2010 had previews included. It was the transition period from Hollywood's dominance to local films.)

Is there a clear goal for Arashi yet or is it soon to make an educated guess? It seems like a front-loaded movie with the audience its going for.

You'd think it'd be frontloaded, but its dailies have been pretty encouraging so far. Monday and Tuesday, combined, weren't too far off (~86%) with its Sunday. So Monday-Friday will probably be equal/greater than its opening weekend (Saturday & Sunday). If that happens, that's a pretty good indication that it won't be particularly frontloaded.

It's hard to say where it could be headed. It's certainly a possibility it ends up expanding to IMAX or 4DX/MX4D later in its run as well, which would likely give it a significant boost. I'm currently expecting it to get to ¥4-5 billion, perhaps?

Sometimes "event" or "special" films (basically non-traditional feature films) like this can have a long life in theaters from fans (which the films almost exclusively attract anyway) returning to watch them over and over again. And Arashi has a lot of fans (1.7 million members strong in their official fanclub), and since they're on hiatus now after 20 years, this film could be the last time their fans get to see them perform. Not as good as a live concert, of course, but a well-filmed concert experience from their final show of their final tour (presumably) is the next best thing. They're pretty much the biggest band in Japan since the 80s, but you could make a case in the future for them being the biggest ever.

Musicals can get great legs in the market. If that happens that would be wonderful with this opening.

What are the chances of the JJK movie shortening Arashi's legs though.

JJK 0 giveaway is 5M, I believe that ties One Piece Gold for largest giveaway, right?

I believe so? One Piece Film Gold, wasn't it? It's a huge giveaway amount, but it shows confidence and may allow it to play better over the holidays without the worry of more casual fans missing the giveaway if it had been 2-3 million, and maybe missing the movie as a result. Still gives them an incentive to go if they can't the first week or two if giveaways remain.

Its first 18 days are all taking place either over the weekends, on national holidays, or during the holiday frame. The only somewhat "normal" days from between its opening on Dec. 24 through Jan. 11th may be Dec. 27th and 28th. Many businesses and schools will close on the 24th, but in the past a number remain open until 2-3 days before New Year's Eve. So Dec. 27th/28th may be somewhat normal.

And it nor anything else should impact Arashi. Arashi is playing exclusively to its fan base/club members. The only thing that'll impact it is when the fans begin to stop seeing it after X amount of repeats. Could some Arashi fans also be Jujutsu Kaisen fans? Sure, but they'll have enough opportunities to see both over the holidays once JJK opens in 4 weeks. And in general, no films really impact one another over major holiday periods like New Year.

All films thrive to the best of their ability over New Year, Golden Week, and Obon Festival since many Japanese only go to the movies during the holiday periods due to work/school obligations. You sometimes see what you'd think is awful scheduling (like Yokai Watch and Big Hero 6 opening the same weekend years ago ahead of New Year, or Pixar/Pokemon/Ghibli regularly opening on the same weekend or within 7 days of each other in July), but it's fine and they all excel anyway due to how beneficial the 3 major holiday periods are.
