Amazing for Suzume. Going by it doing better than expected from the presales and Sunday increase, and a few reviews I saw online, the reception seems to be very positive.

With those numbers when will it enter the 100 top grossing films in Japan?

A bit hard to say without any data besides the opening right now, but I'd guess in its fourth week (first week of December).

This might be good news for the Japanese box office? It usually is in western countries...as cinema is a low-cost form of entertainment. But it also says people are reining in their spending.

BBC News wrote:
Japan's economy has unexpectedly shrunk for the first time in a year as the rising cost of living hit consumer spending growth.

Gross domestic product (GDP) fell by an annualised 1.2% in the three months to the end of September.

People reined in spending amid fears of a global slowdown and as the weak yen made imports more expensive.

Could benefit theaters, although the box-office has been largely thriving.

And yeah, I don't know if I'd say it's "unexpected" the economy took a hit from consumers spending less despite prices generally going up. As mentioned a while back, the Japanese are very stubborn (and old), and won't just settle for things when prices go up (most prices have been the same for 25/30 years). Most aren't just going to say, "Ugh, I guess I'll pay this price because of inflation and stuff. I still need it after all." No...

They'll take their business elsewhere or find alternative foods/goods/methods/entertainment, etc., versus paying prices they feel are too much. Companies are very reluctant in increasing prices because they know it may not just mean fewer customers, but also less sales/profit since any price increases isn't likely to make up for losing customers. In regard to movie theaters, the general price of admission has increased ONCE between 1993-2022 (in 2014).

Now, the Yen *has* strengthened a bit and is back around 140 vs the USD (still crap, but noticeably better than last month). Will it continue to improve? Hope so, especially if inflation really has peaked and/or is slowing down in the US. Guess we'll only be able to say for sure as the weeks/months come ad go.

>Suzume, the latest from acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai, takes the #1 spot in a huge way. Selling 982,631 admissions over the weekend across 420 screens, and 1,331,081 admissions over its first three-days, the film became Shinkai's biggest debut as well as ranking high on various other charts below:

-5th Biggest November Opening Weekend
-9th Biggest 3-Day Opening Weekend
-9th Biggest Opening Weekend for an Animated Film

Conservatively, I think we can look forward to a total around ¥13 billion ($90 million+) / 9 million+ admissions, but there's a good chance it could challenge Shinkai's previous film, Weathering With You (¥14.19 billion / 10.61 million admissions), and possibly make a run at ¥15 billion ($105 million+) and 11 million admissions. All of these marks would win just about any other year, but 2022 has two films already above ¥13 billion, and one over ¥18 billion(!), so it's probably unlikely to win the yearly crown. Can it still? Sure, if the legs are there it's not impossible, just an uphill challenge without knowing any other numbers at this point, and it'll likely take many weeks/months before we really know since Japan is a really backloaded market.

>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever debuted in second place, selling 201,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 911 screens (surprisingly high), and 303,356 admissions over its first three days in release. The OW is 6% above the original film, so that's certainly good. I don't expect legs to be as good since Marvel films have been increasingly frontloaded and usually end their runs relatively early due to Disney+, so aiming for ~¥1.5 billion ($11 million) is the likely goal. The first film grossed ¥1.56 billion, so probably looking at roughly the same result.

>One Piece Film Red slips to third place, but that didn't stop it from increasing 20% in its fifteenth weekend (giveaway). Admissions are up to 13.16 million after fifteen weeks. I suspect we'll see its run come to a gradual close from here over the next several weeks, so I'd say it's on track for ~¥18.7 billion ($136 million) / ~13.5 million admissions if so, but Toei could still push it, so we'll need to watch for giveaway announcements.

>Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love Starish Tours continues its long rollercoaster of a run, up 185% this weekend. It's been a near constant run of massive increases and massive decreases and has managed to become one of the leggiest films of all-time for a wide release. Where will it stop? I really don't know because clearly the fanbase is very loyal and have proven their willingness to come back again and again. I assume they'll target ¥2 billion at this point.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (11/12-13); Charts Update
Sword Arts legs seems awful so far and if it hits ¥1 billion and end its run I guess it’s final multiplier will be either between Thor and Dragon Ball or even worse than both.

Yeah. The last one had awful legs, too, but this one might end up having worse. It was already a super fanbase driven franchise, but now it's like ~99% exclusively the base. I recall Aniplex did a giveaway for the last film later in its run, so they'll probably do the same here to get a little more out of it.

Do the Suzume's Monday and Tuesday admissions imply strong legs?

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (11/12-13); Charts Update
They're good so far (including Wednesday). Hard to say if they imply strong legs at this point but they're good.

The key to its longevity will be the weekdays. There's only one holiday from now until the New Year holiday period (Christmas Week helps, too, if there's kid/family appeal as daycares let out for it, but school/university and workplaces are still in session/open until a day or two before New Year's Eve), so it has to go 6 weeks without any help. This is what really hurt Frozen II as well by opening in November vs. March like its predecessor (the first Frozen had both Spring Break and Golden Week in its first 8 weeks). Frozen II skewed a bit too young toward kids/families to thrive in November (and much of December), so it had poor weekdays and wasn't able to capitalize on the New Year holiday period as much since its numbers had fallen off a bit by then.

Judging from the early weekdays for Suzume, it might be safe to say it isn't skewing too young, which is good news. Using some rough estimates for Thursday and Friday, its weekdays will be ~85-90% of its opening weekend, which is good. You want to be as close to an even split between weekends and weekdays as possible since that means multi-demographic appeal. This is especially important in the off season (right now) with no holiday support.

So... looking good right now, but too early to project anything in the long-term.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (11/12-13); Charts Update
Marvel/DC as usual are frontloaded and for the weekend Box Office for Japan only Saturday/Sunday are counted but for Doctor Strange Multiverse Of Madness if you count not only Saturday/Sunday OW but as a whole from May 4 to May 8 opening of ¥1.2 Billion and its final number was ¥2.14 Billion that is a multiplier of 1.78 legs and that is pretty awful if you count it’s five days as a whole opening. I think that may be if counting it’s whole opening the worst legs for a CBM in Japan and maybe even for a Billion yen grosser.

An excellent second weekend indeed. Same percentage drop (~15%) as Weathering With You, but since it opened higher its second weekend is higher than Weathering With You's OW. And I believe it's just inside the Top 10 Biggest Second Weekends.

RRR crossed ¥300M today. It should go to ¥500M surely, wonder if it can hit ¥1B.

I've been busy and haven't gotten to the weekend actuals yet, but should today!

Also, Suzume had its biggest single day yet on Wednesday (day 13), a national holiday, larger than its OD or first Sat. and Sun.

Estimating it did over 550,000 admissions and ~¥725 million ($5.2 million) on Wednesday. It's one of the biggest Wednesdays ever. I'll check later to see how close it is to a record.

And due to this staggering number, I'll post a daily tracker for the film soon too.
