Yes, I did not read it carefully about the release in Japan. Thank you for your correction. I wonder how much the movie will earn this time. It is a weird combination as a movie format in my opinion.

So, it's essentially a special that'll recap the ending of Season 2 (which would be awesome to see on the big screen, yes), and then end with the first episode of Season 3 (which will debut proper in April), in a movie format right?

It's a cool idea, and will probably earn a good amount, but I really wish they had adapted an actual arc (or part of an arc, as the remaining arcs are too long for a single movie) for a theatrical release instead. I suppose they might do this with the final arc, but that's probably not going to happen until ~2025.

From the announcement, yes. The question is if Japanese willingly to pay for tickets to watch contents, which will be free on TV 2 months later.

That's sort of the problem. I mean, they'll earn money from this, of course, but it's only going to appeal to the core fanbase. Granted, the core fanbase is large, but I imagine box office expectations are going to be grossly over-inflated here since it's not, technically, a movie-movie. And the theatrical run looks to be fairly limited, about 2 months, right? Once Season 3 debuts, I don't think many would be interested in going to see the end of S2 and the first episode of S3 in theaters.

This isn't *really* the next Demon Slayer movie which people will probably run with.

In my opinion, their main goal may be to sell merchandise at movie theaters.

Even only 2-3b would be ridicolous given these theatrical advance screenings usually are ridicolously limited and make next to nothing. But this is being given a super wide release at 418 theaters, imax screens, and a 2 months runtime, so I don't even know honestly.

Over 5b for this sort of operation would be an absolute "What the fuck?" moment and pretty much mean the series can do whatever the fuck it wants in Japan and just make money on command. I'm not really sure where to go here with a prediction because, like, this kind of operation is just so unprecedented.

Yeah, it's being given the full theatrical experience.

Not sure how to predict it either. We keep having these unprecedented moments at the box-office lately. It would be quite something if it earned enough to make the Top 10 of 2023, which could very well happen.

Whatever happens, it'll be a good way to test how big the series still is. If something like this would earn ¥3 billion, or even hit blockbuster status at ¥5 billion (guaranteed to be inside the Top 10 of 2023 then), I'd say it's still up there as the biggest brand in Japan's history. The things the brand did in 2020/2021 (even providing an economic boom), not just at the box-office, was insane. It's "just" a recap of the end of Season 2, followed by the first episode of Season 3 (which is being reported at an hour) that will air on TV two months later. But maybe even that's enough.

Also, to have all those international release dates already as part of its "World Tour" is impressive.

One thing I like about Slam Dunk box office is the fact it will potentially be the 2nd Toei Company movie after One Piece Film Red in the top 100 grossing films in Japan once it surpasses that Keanu Reeves movie Speed.

Toei has had a record-breaking year for themselves. As of Sept. 30th, they surpassed their old record (2009) by 23%. And One Piece Film Red, all by itself, has earned more for Toei than their entire previous record year (2009).

Slam Dunk is a great way to close the year on too.

Do we think Suzume still has a chance to pass WWY or has that ship sailed?

I'd say it's close to sailing, but the navigator hasn't decided on a heading. It looks like it's on track for a ~20-25% drop this weekend, which is solid and keeps the chances alive. If it can maintain weekend drops below 20/25% until New Year (preferably one or two better ones, like last week), then it's still possible since I believe it'll excel over the holiday period.

Next weekend will help tell us. If if sees another sub-20/25% drop, then keeps it chances alive. If it drops over 30%, it's going to be very hard I think.

I'd give it like a 1/3 shot right now.

Hey Corpse in the future do you plan to update the top grossing/most attended franchise list especially with the release of One Piece Film Red being the top grossing in the franchise among others? I known you are quite busy with work and everything but you can take your time. BTW how are Slam Dunk and Suzume this weekend doing at BO, and as a result of them performing this weekend what they will be there future grosses be going forward with the release of Avatar 2 and the major holidays breaks coming up in a few weeks?

I'm a little confused about the all-time attendance list here. On said list, Godzilla (1954) is ranked as the 22nd most attended Japanese film of all-time with 9.61 million admissions. But a few other sites I've looked at place Godzilla as only the 8th highest grossing film of 1954. For example, according to Japanese Wikipedia, Godzilla had a distribution income of 152.14 million yen. But Your Name (1954) had a distribution income of 330.15 million yen.

How is Godzilla on the list here and Your Name or the several other films above Godzilla not? Does the list only include films that admission numbers can be confirmed? Might Godzilla's admissions include reissues? Or were Godzilla's tickets significantly cheaper than those of the competition?

Still looks like 6-7b range to me. Its drops haven't been anything special so far and monday looks like another kinda hefty drop at -38-39%. Avatar releasing and claiming a lot of screens/PLFs isn't going to help either.

Seems to be struggling to expand its audience, but as they want the "sequel to the anime" route, that's kind of to be expected. Not sure how WOM is, but legs are kind of on the "meh" side so far. Not terrible, but not really great either.

10 years after his previous film, the Wind Rises, and just around the time Avatar 2 exit the theater.

From what I heard it'll be the most expensive Japanese animation of all time, surpassing the old record, which was also belong to Ghibli's Tale of Princess Kaguya.

Summer 2023 Japan will be great with Kingdom 3 being release also. Man 2023 Japan box office is going to be interesting with Kingdom 3, Another Studio Ghibli film, and the 2023 Toho Godzilla film.

EDIT: Shin-Chan 3DCG is gonna be release in the summer of 2023.
