~ Estimate.

Here's what I'm estimating for its admissions on its first two days.

-First (Opening) Friday looks safe to call the 3rd Biggest OD Friday ever.
-First Saturday also looks safe to call the 3rd Biggest Opening Saturday, though there's a slight shot that it could claim the 2nd Biggest Opening Saturday. And this should be the 3rd or 4th biggest overall Saturday on record too.

Welcome back, Corpse! Glad to hear you're feeling (atleast partially better). Good weekend for that, too, with the amazing numbers from Conan.

As an aside - it's crazy how even with all the achievements of the past few years, DS still holds the 8 biggest single days...films have basically been taking turns beating pre-DS records, and yet they can't even take down its 8th biggest day still :zonks:

Gettin' there. Basic things drain my energy, and some symptoms come and go, but noticeably better than the first couple weeks.

Thanks for the Friday actual, Kanroji. I'll use it to project Saturday and Sunday, and the 3-day. Note I'll use a slightly lower average ticket price for Sat/Sun than Fri since those days usually come in a little bit lower. And with that, and the very good Sunday hold (just off 6%), it looks likely to have cracked ¥3 billion and 2 million admissions over the 3-day.

If it does, it'll be only the second film in history to achieve those feats.

Looking like its two day weekend might beat One Piece Red's. Wow.

Yeah, it might have.

Get this... The Matrix Reloaded held the OW record (revenue and admissions) from 2001-2020, 19.5 years, until Demon Slayer: Mugen Train crushed it.

And since, two more films, One Piece Film Red and probably Detective Conan: The Black Iron Submarine which just opened, topped The Matrix Reloaded's previous OW record.

It took almost 20 years for that OW record to fall, and now 3 films in just 2.5 years have beaten it (revenue and admissions). And they all did it without previews (Reloaded had previews) AND a lower average ticket price. Tickets aren't much higher today than they were in 2001, but since Reloaded was rated R-15, it had a higher average ticket price than the average today.

One way to solve how to compare 2 days opening weekend vs 3 days opening weekend is to include Monday number for 2 days films, not perfect, but better than nothing.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Detective Conan 26 Breaking Records
I'm not sure. I haven't looked into it yet, but will continue to be cautious on it.

-It has a great release date, literally the day before Golden Week begins, and that Friday (28th) will probably be boosted from some schools/businesses closing early ahead of the holiday period too. Detective Conan being so huge will likely prevent it from getting optimal seating, but it should still receive plenty to post good numbers over the holidays if interest is there.

-Nintendo is bigger than its ever been. They've had like a 90% market share in the country in the video game industry for the past 5+ years now. Switch still tops hardware sales most weeks and might end up as the best selling console of all time (1 in 4 Japanese own a Switch right now). 90% of the top 20 games are Nintendo each week (sometimes it's nothing but Nintendo titles). And by the end of this generation, Switch software sales are going to dominate the all-time best selling games chart (probably having over 50% of the entire top 20/25).

-Illumination has, arguably, become the go-to foreign animation studio for Japanese audiences ahead of Disney/Pixar now.

-Toho-Towa handling the release, since Toho owns Universal distributor rights, is a plus. The past several years, maybe even as far back as a decade now, has shown Japanese distributors are better at handling foreign films.

-The box-office results in the U.S. and worldwide, but mainly the U.S., can go a long way to increase interest among audiences.

So... lots of positives. The question becomes will Japanese audiences simply be interested? They've largely ignored Hollywood's adaptations of domestic material. Now, it IS a co-Japanese production. That could offset some doubt. Nearly every Hollywood adaptation of a domestic property has bombed or disappointed. This has always been the big question, will the Japanese care, and we just need to wait and see what happens.

Just crazy. (And very cool estimates were practically spot on!)

It looked like the franchise might be getting near "peak" with its openings, but nope! Went from achieving All-Time Top 10-20 opening weekends every year over the last six years, to achieving the second biggest opening ever this year.

It'll be interesting to see just how many Detective Conan films make up the Top 20/25 or so OWs in the next few years. And if this new film is an indication, it could end up having a majority of films in the Top 10 OWs too.

And yeah, pookpooi. Suzume's numbers in China are incredible. Fourth highest grossing Japanese film worldwide now, and should exceed $300 million worldwide too.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Detective Conan 26 Breaking Records
So with actuals confirming now, its Sat/Sun alone was enough to achieve the second biggest 2-day OW of all-time in both revenue and admissions, once again surpassing the OW record The Matrix Reloaded held for 19.5 years.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (Oct. 2020), One Piece Film Red (Aug. 2022), and now Detective Conan: The Black Iron Submarine (Apr. 2023) have all beaten Reloaded's old OW record. It took nearly 20 years to break it, but in the course of the past 2.5 years, three films have now done it. And they all did it with a LOWER avg. ticket price than Matrix Reloaded (important to note this since inflation usually results in records being broken in most markets).

Detective Conan: The Black Iron Submarine is also only the fourth film in history (on record) to have grossed more than ¥1 billion in a single-day (which it did on both Sat and Sun), which, again, have all occurred over the past 2.5 years. The first three being Demon Slayer (Oct. 2020), Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Dec. 2021), One Piece Film Red (Aug. 2022).

Are we in the golden age of Japanese cinematic industry? Seems like Japanese movies are breaking records all the time and everywhere (looking at you, China).

Suzume did 145,603 admissions in its first weekend in France vs 56,665 for Your Name back in December 2016. Shinkai's profile has really grown here.
