Apparently The North American opening weekend potentially of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero could surpass the entire gross run in Japan from the looks of it. Has there been any other Japanese film where it gross way more overseas than in Japan itself?

It's not too shocking. It's very impressive, of course, anime has become more mainstream in the US and hopefully it continues to crow, but the exchange rate makes this quite easy.

The JPY has been at a 22-24-year-low versus the USD for nearly half a year now (absurdly strong dollar from inflation versus a currency in a market with almost no inflation for 30 years = one of the worst exchange rates in the world, perhaps even the worst).

And Dragon Ball is the most recognizable anime in the Western world. Broly did more overseas than in Japan, and Resurrection F was about 50/50. So, it's going to be pretty "easy" for Super Hero to earn more overseas than in Japan right now since the exchange rate has cost it so much in USD.

The first two Pokémon movies also earned more overseas than in Japan. Stand By Me, Doraemon and its sequel earned more overseas than in Japan. The second My Hero Academia movie was about 50/50. There might be a couple other films as well.

Should the box office of this re-released pokemon films be added to their totals in the franchise list? Or are special editions to be kept apart?

Last week's re-release (the 2002 film) was reported separately. I don't know if there's some rule where a re-release has to play for a certain amount of time to be included (the 25th anniversary Pokémon rereleases are for one-week-only) in the original gross or what though.

However, 2020 saw a number of re-releases due to the pandemic delaying films, and those totals (while counted separately) were added to the original gross at the end of the year. So, I guess we'll have to see what happens later on and if Toho releases a report on them. We only got the four day gross for last week's film (which opened on Thursday for Obon Festival), and I suspect we'll only get the Fri.-Sun gross for this week's film (the 2003 film). The 2007 film is up next week.

Hi Corpse,
Assuming Minions 2 and Jurassic World 3 both fall between 45 and 50% this weekend, how much total do you see them ending up by around end of Sept which is possibly when their runs will be over? Thanks!

I'm expecting ~¥6 billion (currently ~$44m) for Jurassic World 3, and ~¥4.5 billion (currently ~$34m) for Minions 2. JW3, as long as it stabilizes after the big ~40/45% post-Obon drop, should be able to get there. Minions 2 is a little iffy, depending on what happens when it enters September. Sometimes young-skewing films collapse when September begins, which could lower that projection a good bit.

So that means that JW3 will just miss $1b ww assuming no new expansions?

I asked earlier if it was not playing anywhere else now, or rather, if Japan was the only market where it was really making anything.

If Japan is it... then I suppose it won't get to $1 billion worldwide. Based on The Numbers, it was at $980.03 million as of this past Sunday. It's earned about $2.5m more from Japan (Mon.-Fri.) and $260,000 (Mon.-Thur.) from the US. That'd put it around $982.8 million going into this weekend.

Japan will do around $1.8m this weekend, while the US will do about $525,000? So that's $2.3 million or so, presumably taking its WW total to $985.1 million after this Sunday. (This is assuming it's done in every other market.)

I think Japan will add about $7-9 million more from here, so that's $992-994 million WW. And the US, I guess another $1.5m or something? So, I suppose the final total will be $994-996 million WW.

It will get over $1 billion. It's still playing in other markets. Last weekend it did $1.4 million in 85 markets (not including Japan), so there's still money for Universal to push it over the coveted mark.

Nice Sunday bump. As mentioned, Sunday increases used to be pretty common, but have become less so in recent years (while Saturdays have grown), so this is quite good. It's even the biggest Sunday increase (of those that managed an increase) in the Top 10 this weekend.

More achievements as of Sunday:

-Second Fastest Film to reach ¥9 billion.
-Second Fastest Film to reach 6.5 million admissions.

The road to ¥10 billion (uber-blockbuster status) begins now, and it's likely to be a short road as it's almost certain to exceed the milestone next weekend (probably on Saturday). Although, if this total is close to the actual, there is a possibility it reaches it even sooner on Friday. Next weekend's giveaway might deflate Thursday/Friday though as the fans just wait until Saturday. Either way, as long as it does it by next Monday, it'll become the second fastest film to reach ¥10 billion (and 7 and 7.5m admissions).

I found this fact about Tokyo Olympiad box office admission that if you count its admission only from theaters it is only 7.5 million admission but the 16 million other admissions that took place in schools and public halls would take it to 23.5 million.

Hi Corpse, I've been following this thread for a few years and first of all want to thank you for the amazing work you've done to track and document everything! I just want to ask how the latest Kamen Rider movie did, and if you have a list about how the franchise had been doing in the box office over the years. Or if you're willing to, just Tokusatsu box office numbers history since there are so many crossover movies.

First, thank you!

Second, I have Kamen Rider included on the Biggest Film Franchises list, but I haven't updated it in a while. Kanroji here has helped make it more accurate and with gathering numbers for some older franchises, too, so I'll get around to update it sometime in the coming weeks.

The latest film released in July was somewhere around ¥400m, I believe, before it fell outside tracking range. The Kamen Rider franchise has been struggling in recent years. It has younger appeal, so it could sort of being explained in 2020/2021 (since younger skewing films suffered the most, almost exclusively), but they should have recovered by now, I would think. Hopefully it can see a revival in the future.

Chaplainfan: I knew about the admissions split for Tokyo Olympiad, but I always saw the 19.5m as the overall total, not 23.5m. 23.5m was Spirited Away's original run, and there are reports of it surpassing Tokyo Olympiad's 19.5m, so I wonder if there's some error there giving it Spirited Away's admissions?

It's possible. At the very least now, I think Friday has become the likely day.

I underestimated the weekend by ¥33m and 19,000 admissions. And last Tues.-Fri. by, interestingly enough, also ¥33m but about 27,000 admissions (don't have exact admissions as of Mon., so have to estimate a little there).

So far, it's come in above what I've estimated every day after the opening weekend. So, after I adjust last week's daily estimates up a bit, I'll be estimating a little higher moving forward.

And thanks for sharing the breakdown there, Kanroji!

Last week's estimates have been adjusted (upward again) to account for the higher actual total as of Sunday (08/21). I'm going to a tad bit higher with the estimates this week, which makes sense because it's been coming in a little higher with actuals with every official update after its opening weekend.

With the bump with actuals, and a very healthy Monday, it's moved its estimated date of reaching ¥10 billion up a day to this Friday. However... there's a good chance it can do it even sooner on Thursday, its 20th day in release. That's... massive. Demon Slayer aside, it'll have reached the uber-blockbuster milestone 5 days faster Spirited Away, and 8 days or more than every other film in history.

Hi Corpose
Can you post the weekend numbers for JW3 and Minions 2 and their drop compared to last weekend when you get a moment? Thanks!

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Obon Festival Wraps Up
The acuals will be released (and posted) later today (~6 hours from this post). The preliminary numbers for Jurassic World 3 are: ¥268m weekend, ¥4.988 billion total. No weekend number for Minions 2 yet, but its total is up to ¥3.861 billion.

While I'm here, bullza! DBS: Super Hero actually got an update, its total is at ¥2,492,580,150. So, unless it's just dropped everywhere this week, it'll get above ¥2.5 billion. Guessing the final will be ¥2.51/2.52 billion.

Interesting only ¥7.5 million to go. Didn't think there'd be anymore updates.

>One Piece Film Red experienced a large drop, but a 45% decline after two back-to-back giveaway events and Obon Festival is quite solid. It's the second fastest film in history to exceed ¥9 billion and 6.5 million admissions (6,651,711), and will become the second fastest film to reach the uber-blockbuster milestone of ¥10 billion this upcoming Thursday or Friday.

If it was going to collapse, it would have this weekend, so we're in the good at this point. It has a lot left in the tank. How much? Well, a lot. It has a third giveaway event (a really big one) beginning on Aug. 27th, so next weekend will either see a miniscule drop or possibly an increase if enough of the fanbase comes out again. I think it could be as high as ¥11 billion (maybe more!) after next weekend, and if it is, we might need to consider it having a realistic shot at ¥15 billion+ (~$110 million+).

>Jurassic World: Dominion had so-so hold after Obon Festival, and is right on the cusp of achieving blockbuster status (¥5 billion), which it broke on Monday. Admissions have reached 3,340,170. Overall, not a bad performance in Japan, just a little lackluster, even if a decline from the last film was expected. Expect a finish right around ¥6 billion (~$44/45 million).

>Top Gun: Maverick… Yes, it managed another increase after the 20% increase over the holiday period last weekend. This weekend's number is even more impressive than last weekend because an increase last weekend was already expected. Admissions are up to 7,242,446. We might need to set the new goal up to ¥13 billion ($95 million+). I don't want to set that goal yet, but if it's looking doable.

>Kingdom II should have held better than this, so I have to think the film has generally unfavorable WOM. The fact it's going to struggle to ¥5 billion after its very impressive opening weekend in summer is pretty bad. ¥5 billion is an excellent number, don't get me wrong, but as I've said, there was a lot more missed out on here due to, apparent, poor WOM. It definitely won't match its predecessor now (¥5.73 billion), and with how expensive these films are, I really question what the two upcoming sequels (already filming!) are going to do. Wouldn't be surprised if it drops to the ¥3/4 billion range, which would be okay under normal circumstances, but ¥4 billion is apparently the breaking even point for these films.

>Minions: The Rise of Gru held decently post-Obon. Legs haven't been as strong as they could (or should) have been, but a finish near ¥4.5 billion (~$33/34 million) is still very good (15% decline, or less, versus its predecessor).

>Pokémon: Jirachi - Wish Maker (one-week-only re-release of the 2003 film) is estimated for the weekend frame. It ranked fifth in admissions, but the low avg. ticket prices probably puts it below Kingdom II in revenue. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll get the weekend gross because the re-release of the 2002 film last week wasn't. Over the three-day, it sold 135,576 admissions across 307 screens.
