Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (11/27-28); Charts Update
I'm estimating that Arashi has earned ~¥250-260 million ($2.2/2.3 million) from Monday-Wednesday, or about 58% of its opening weekend gross so far during the weekdays. So the M-F period is going to come very close to its opening weekend (90/95%, maybe higher). Good sign for its legs, but as mentioned in my last post, this film is 99.9% reliant on how many times the fans come back for repeats, so it's all up to them on how far the film ultimately goes, not WOM, competition, etc.

It should be comfortably above ¥2 billion now with ~¥2.05 billion (almost $18 million).

Random Thoughts but I expect above ¥5B OW to low start at ¥1.5B (min)

Expecting higher than DS when JJK is nowhere near as big a franchise is just puzzling to me but you do you I guess.

Yeah, you are correct that is why I am lining with ¥1.5B but industry always does the unexpected (I meant might be just ¥800M -¥1B OW)

But, I always had a question in my mind "How much numbers would we get if the film is running in full capacity and on maximum shows in a single day /OW. Also on the other hand, how much if there is no any film playing other than JJK Movie 0 (along with it's mobilization)

I didn't read the article well (https://eiga.com/news/20211202/7/?s=09) This is the complete breakdown of works as published in the article:
• Evangelion 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon A Time : ¥10.3B
• Detective Conan The Scarlet Bullet : ¥7.6B
• Tokyo Revengers : ¥4.5B
• Rurouni Kenshin The Final : ¥4.4B
• 007: No Time To Die : ¥3B (Straightly a error)
• Godzilla vs Kong : ¥2B (Straightly a error)

They're just rounding up from their last reported gross, and projecting 007's finish too high since it's still playing.

It'd be like the news in the US reporting that a film grossed $300 million in a short article or segment when it really did $290-299 million. Example: "X film grossed nearly $300 million at the box office and is nominated for 2 Golden Globes." Stuff like that. Most people don't care if X film really grossed $298.72 million or something. $300 million is easier and more attractive in reporting.

Eiren will have the finalized grosses at the end of January. Will some of those possibly end up correct? Yeah, it's possible. Some films can increase ~0.02-0.05% or so when Eiren reports their final. Evangelion, for example, had its last reported total as of the Sunday of its final week in theaters, so that final week's Monday-Thursday are currently unaccounted for. Whatever it earned in those final four days could be enough to take it from ¥10.24 billion to ¥10.30 billion for the year (either way, it'll be slightly more than ¥10.24 billion).

Corspe, Yes, I see that extreme rounding out numbers for easing writing. Especially, ¥50M increase for Tokyo Revengers and Rurouni Kenshin The Final, where we can expect a jump only of ¥2M to ¥5M in max. Same goes to EVA and Detective Conan jump should be between ¥10M (Here, EVA is an expection, because it will add more because of recent IMAX screening which can add up to ¥20M) so it's a safe bet to say EVA at ¥10.25B-¥10-26B.

Other, than that Imported Film has a huge difference of ¥200M-¥400M making things laughable. Well, unlike the Warner Bros Japan report will be published on Eiren 2021 on January 2022. But, Toho released film will be published earlier on Toho 2021 Annual Report on Dec 2nd/3rd Week.

Right after I updated and posted the release schedule again too! :funny:

It's been edited.

Very good news, by the way. IMAX taking its count up to 418 theaters places it among the top 5 widest releases in terms of theaters, I believe, perhaps third or fourth. Need to wait and see with the screens the week of release, but chances are that count won't be anything too crazy.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is receiving a very, very generous amount of seats/showtimes this weekend. In fact, it's the most seats/showings any Marvel/DC film has likely ever received.

It's mostly due to theaters having plenty of screens/showtimes to spare from a weak November, most carryover films either disappointing or already been playing for 4-6+ weeks, but it's still an impressive result. I'll post where it ranks on the all-time list soon.

The first film was a nice surprise, opening to ¥439.0 million ($3.9 million) and grossing ¥2.25 billion ($20.0 million). Not too many non-Spider-Man films or films featuring Spider-Man (like Avengers, Civil War) have performed better among all Marvel/DC films. If you exclude ALL Spider-Man/Spider-Man related Marvel/DC films, then Venom has the 4th Highest OW and 7th Highest Total among all Marvel/DC films. That excludes a lot of films, yeah, but pretty impressive.

And yes, the first film's success was because Venom IS a character in the Spider-Man franchise, so it had an advantage there, but it still excluded Spider-Man himself.

I expect the sequel to probably perform similarly well.

Note: Entry determined by widest day of a film's opening weekend (typically first Saturday).

Again, inflated counts due to the reasons I mentioned in my last post (open market right now, in short), but still very impressive. More seats/showings doesn't necessarily mean more ticket sales, but they certainly don't hurt and allow for higher potential.

This is also a very good example of why delayed releases work well in Japan. Not releasing back in October has allowed it opportune opening weekend potential not just in terms of seats/showings (it would have competed with Masquerade Night, 007, SAO, etc., back then), but also because of its good/great reception at the box-office elsewhere and among audiences before reaching Japan. That helps in creating a better marketing campaign, and while the genre is relatively limited in its audience appeal, if any other appeal does exist outside of the usual Marvel/DC crowd, this can help bring them in.

Wouldn't it be second? I think you mentioned around the time DS released that theater record was around 381 for opening. Obviously conan with its gargantuan 498 is #1 now though.

I'll double check when I get back home, but I meant overall, not just opening weekend. When Demon Slayer added IMAX, I believe it got up to 428 (having managed to pick up a couple more standard and Dolby, I think) as its highest count.

So JJK will be third behind it (but second if only looking at OW), but I'll double-check to be certain. And yes, both are comfortably behind Detective Conan which was the first film (and only so far) to debut at all locations that provide premium formats (IMAX, 4DX/MX4D, Dolby Cinema, 4K, etc.)

Very good Saturday for Venom 2. I don't want to guarantee that it out-opens the first film, but it's very likely. And, if it can avoid a 15%+ decline on Sunday, it has a chance of reaching ¥500 million.

Only 3 non-Spider-Man/Spider-Man-featuring Marvel/DC films (Avengers 2, Avengers, and Joker) have opened above ¥500 million, so that'd be a particularly impressive achievement for Venom 2 if it can do so. But if not, it's still looking likely to achieve the 4th Biggest OW for a Marvel/DC film if you exclude Spider-Man/Spider-Man-featuring films.

That seems impossible. Jujutsu Kaisen, while very popular, cannot compare to the gargantuan phenomenon that is Demon Slayer.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: December Release Schedule
It's (basically) impossible, and it's not really a matter of popularity. It's a near mathematical impossibility. Demon Slayer was the widest release by a ridiculous margin. It was able to play on as many as 60% of all the screens nationwide, and was playing for 21 hours a day, 6am-3am, at several locations (and some theaters had it playing 40-50 times a day). And yet, it still sold out 77% of all of its showings over its opening weekend (that 23% was primarily just the showings from 12am-8am when casual fans were sleeping).

With so many more films playing now, it's not possible for any single film to occupy so many screens or to have so many showings again. Demon Slayer wouldn't have opened to what it did under normal circumstances, just as nothing will be able to open to what it did from now on. Even its third weekend is close to being out of range for anything to beat over their opening weekends.

Back during Demon Slayer's run, I wasn't kidding when I said to enjoy it while you could. Because nothing's ever going to match it or come remotely close, so nothing should ever be compared to it unless you want everything to look miniscule in comparison. It's in a league of its own, far more literally than figuratively, likely for the entirety of the Japanese box-office (at least in our lifetimes).

I expect Jujutsu Kaisen to have a box-office performance perhaps similar to the more recent Detective Conan films. Which, while no where near DS (again, because it's not possible mathematically), are still among some of the most impressive opening weekends.

(I'll update the first post of the thread around the end of the year/early into 2022.)

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: December Release Schedule
Surprisingly, I don't think it's impossible but Japan itself is full of success. When, for the first time I forecast DS, like fellow colleagues at work spoke more like a ¥10B which were later improved to ¥15B, but now it stands at ¥40.4B, almost 4X+ of original forecast. I am actually not talking about logic here, but what Toho and it's staff are trying to do, looks like a terrible frontloaded. As I see on BOT, a user assumed that they planned to distribute "5M copies of the movie's novel 0.5" on opening week. It sounds strange but this numbers are extravagancly equal to ¥7B. Although, even if the work manage, yet considering the work more like fan-driven or limited age audience can only assure a low of ¥20B final or even low to ¥15B. But, at last, it is only a question that time can answer.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: December Release Schedule
Japan is a "never say never" market. The majority of films at the top of the All-Time list weren't foreseen to get there. The only expected one in the Top 7 would be Spirited Away, honestly. The other 6 far, far (FAR) exceeded all expectations. This is mostly true as you go lower on the All-Time list as well. You find more films expected to do the big numbers they did the lower you go, but many entries (I'd say about half) in the Top 15/20 were surprises and largely unexpected.

So expecting a film to crack the All-Time Top 10 (or 15, really), very rarely occurs in Japan. Frozen II was expected to do it, especially after its huge opening, but it failed. Miyazaki's "last" film (The Wind Rises) was expected to do it, but it failed. The last Harry Potter had very high expectations given how big the earlier films were in the market. Maybe not Top 15 high, but certainly better than 41st place.

That doesn't mean films with incredibly high expectations not reaching them are disappointments (few are), it just speaks to how Japan as a market behaves. There is a huge lack of sequels in the Top 25 (only 5!), for example, where sequels tend to dominate many other markets. The biggest of films typically come unexpectedly in Japan.

Therefore, Demon Slayer's total could be beaten some point in the future, but it's very, very doubtful we'll see it coming. And something will probably need to do it in the next ~10 years or so, or Japan's aging population and rapid population decline may make it impossible down the road.

However, its opening weekend is just not going to be beaten, at least not anytime remotely soon because it's just not mathematically doable, guys. It managed to reach near max capacity nationwide in regard to seats, screens and showtimes due to the weakened market from COVID. And despite nearly maxing out the market's capacity for an opening weekend, it *still* sold out 77% of all its showings (pretty much only the very early showings from 6-8am and very late showings from 12am-3am didn't sell out). That just can't be achieved again under normal circumstances because no film can receive a comparable amount of seats, screens and showtimes to do it.

All but 2 films on record could have 100% sold out all their weekend shows and still not come near Demon Slayer's opening weekend, only as high as ~70-80%. The other two would have needed to sell out ~95% of all their shows to just match DS's OW..

It performed very well! I'm estimating right around ¥500 million for the weekend, which is $4.4 million. Thanks, mark.

I'll have where its OW ranks on the Marvel/DC list very shortly.
