Just imagine if DEMON SLAYER 2 had a similar drop as HARRY POTTER 2 compared to HP1...

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (03/27-28); Charts Update
The next film will definitely be fun to follow. It'll be a while though since they're currently continuing the story on TV and the next couple arcs are too long for a film adaptation. But they'll almost definitely get another film in theaters, likely adapting the ending in some way.
It's very likely to follow the sharp declining path of past sequels (HP2, Frozen II) or follow-ups (Avatar, Howl's Moving Castle, Weathering With You) to their ¥20 billion+ predecessors (the only films besides Demon Slayer to have grossed above ¥20 billion). But will it be more of a HP2 and drop just 15% or so, or fall more in line with the others and drop the expected 40% or so? It'll be fun to watch.
The Weekend Actuals above have been updated by the way. Girls und Panzer managed to break ¥100 million over the weekend frame and has been added to the Top Opening Weekends list too.

Re: Japan Box-Office: April Release Schedule
As of this post, Disney still has Black Widow opening exclusively in theaters on April 29th, Showa Day, the first holiday of Golden Week. That means that 6 of its first 7 days are off days (4 national holidays + Saturday and Sunday). Moving it would be very stupid.
All the Japanese related movie sites, including the official Japanese Marvel sites still have it listed for April 29th, too. It's listed for a huge 370 theaters, which might be a record (if not, it's damn close) for a Marvel release in the market.
There is still time to delay it, but I figure they would have already given we're approaching a week since its delay in the U.S. last week. I don't *think* they will, after what happened with Raya and the Last Dragon, but Disney hasn't been particularly theater-friendly lately, so let's wait at least another week to be certain.

Coprse, a few days ago you said that ¥40Bn was locked for Demon Slayer, ¥41Bn very likely and ¥42Bn the new objective, is it still relevant ? Personally I think ¥40Bn is very likely and ¥41Bn the new target because ¥42Bn maybe seems a bit complicated, but maybe I'm wrong.

Re: Japan Box-Office: April Release Schedule
It’s funny to hear that certain things haven’t updated away from the Apr date, but cmon, BW is 100% delayed. 200%. 1000%
There’s literally not a smidge of a chance that it’s going 2 months early in this one random market compared to the global theatrical and SVOD launch in July.

It's just become this game of moving the goal posts beyond the MANY (all) goals it has already achieved. ¥40 billion is locked. They wouldn't have put in the huge effort this week and this upcoming week if they weren't aiming for that mark because there's no reason to reach that mark other than bragging rights. This currently push is pretty similar in purpose to that of Spirited Away's in the Spring of 2002 to get it to ¥30 billion after it won the Best Animated Picture Oscar. There was no reason for it to get above that mark besides bragging rights. And if Toho hadn't given it a big expansion afterwards, it wouldn't have reached ¥30 billion unless they just let it play for many more months, slowing adding to its total (its original run post-expansion finished at ¥30.4 billion). We're just going to have to wait and see where it finishes (like since the very beginning of its run) once it hits ¥40 billion. It'll have around two-months left in theaters (wide-release anyway) afterwards to slowly add to that milestone. Will it reach ¥41 billion? Maybe. Will it reach ¥42 billion? Less maybe. We'll know in mid-June.

Alo12345 wrote: BW delay in Japan confirmed. That's more like a cancellation than a delay. They'd save more money by not releasing in the chains that will still play it now. Forget about it doing much in the market (few million maybe), especially with the Disney+ release. Raya and the Last Dragon level bomb 2.0 incoming. It literally had the best date possible for the entire year to actually post big numbers. 4 of its first 7 days were national holidays (Showa Day, Greenery Day, Constitution Day, and Children's Day), and including the weekend (Saturday and Sunday), that gave it 6.5/7 perfect days with adults and students alike on vacation. Highly doubt Toho Cinemas, Movix Cinemas, Cinema Sunshine, and perhaps others will play it now. Luca not even getting a theatrical release in the market, like Soul and Mulan, is just going to further this boycott of Disney releases in the market for the long-term, too. But I don't think Disney cares much about their theatrical future since they have Disney+. The box office in Japan doesn't need Disney releases to thrive or even just do well, and clearly Disney doesn't think they need Japan's box office now either.

Re: Japan Box-Office: April Release Schedule
Demon Slayer's Saturday reservations, at the same point in time as last week (early Thursday morning), are higher than last week, and by a pretty decent margin, too, at the ~20 theaters I checked. There are 79 showings at the theaters I regularly check, and 44 are already half-full or better. I didn't count last week, but this upcoming Saturday's is noticeably higher. If I had to guess, I'd say last week had ~25/30 showings at half-full at the same point.
I'm not going to predict any sort of percentage, but another increase this upcoming weekend is looking pretty likely. The A6 illustration cards are probably going to be more sought after than last weekend's sticker set since they'll complete the collectable illustration set given out during the giveaways last year.

Thank you! I'm going to post the April Release Schedule in the next day or two, but the month looks pretty good. Detective Conan, as you mentioned, is going to be huge and is probably going to be the biggest film of 2021 unless something unexpected surprises and/or if the Jujutsu Kaisen prequel makes 2021 (which could challenge it). In addition to it, there's the Part 1 release of the final Rurouni Kenshin film opening on April 23rd. It'll be big, likely aiming for ¥5 billion. Warner Bros. is also re-releasing the previous three films with a one-week engagement ahead of the finale release. This is Warner Bros.'s biggest franchise in the market since Harry Potter. The month also has other notable releases, such as Signal: The Movie (film continuing where the TV drama ended off), the latest Crayon Shin-chan, and even though I'm assuming it'll get delayed, Black Widow is still on the schedule. But Disney recently delayed it again in the U.S., so I'd expect them to do the same in Japan since they appear to have zero interest in releasing their films internationally first. A delay would be unfortunate (and unnecessary) though because it's already been listed at a huge 370 locations. If they delay it to July, and keep it as a same-day release on Disney+, chances are theaters aren't going to play it in response and it'll end up as another dump like Raya and the Last Dragon. Any thoughts on Belle, Sword Art Online Progressive, or One Piece Black?

Ok nice, I did not expect that, I hope for a weekend > ¥ 200mn. It would be great.

I get the feeling that Hosoda's prospects of being that next big director have sort of passed him by at this point. Not saying he still can't get that major breakout, but it probably should have happened already. Belle should almost certainly perform better than Mirai which underperformed a bit, but doing Wolf Children and Boy and the Beast numbers could be a bit challenging. That said... Almost no competition from Disney this Summer will certainly help it, and everything else, out a lot over the summer break and Obon Festival period. Sword Art Online Progressive, I presume, will do similar numbers to the last film (Ordinal Scale, right?) since its fanbase is rather set in place. Giveaways have become very popular to do for fanbase-driven films like this as of late though, so if they include some promotions like that it could go higher with potential repeat viewings. What's One Piece Black? I looked it up and found nothing on it? It seems a bit early for another One Piece film, especially with Oda having frequent breaks due to having to change up his 20+ year drawing process due to COVID, and the occasional breaks with his own health. If it's so new of an announcement that I somehow missed it, I'd just expect something similar to the past four films (they've all had mostly similar performances).
