Marvel/DC

Black Widow added.

Its total wasn't updated this past week, so the total above is a week old, but also likely its "final" reported number. It's still playing though (just not earning much), and should have enough to get it above ¥900 million. Not sure if it has enough to crawl to ¥1 billion (~$10 million), I wouldn't expect it to, but IF it does indeed get there, it'll be Disney's first film since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to get there.

Without Toho Cinemas and Movix Cinemas playing it (Disney+ release boycott), it's performed quite well and certainly would have grossed over ¥1 billion pretty easily. Might have even approached ¥1.5 billion

¥1.02 billion ($8.1 million) / 0.88 million - Naruto Shippuden: Will of Fire (2009)

¥1.00 billion ($7.8 million) - Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure (1988)

LA = Live-Action Film.

The final two Rurouni Kenshin films have been added. The Rurouni Kenshin films' totals are preliminary finals, and are only highlighted since they weren't on the list the last time it was updated.

My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission was added to the Opening Weekend list. Very impressive opening weekend, much higher than its two predecessors not just over its first four-days, but also over the traditional 2-day opening weekend (up 58% over the first film and 60% over the second film, respectively). It could be targeting as much as ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million). The first two films nearly opened and finished with identical numbers, so this is a significant increase in what appeared to be a pretty stagnant franchise for a couple years now.

*Run impacted by 6-week theater closures in Tokyo, Osaka, and 6 other prefectures.

Presumably the preliminary final for this year's Detective Conan (remember it was delayed from 2020). Very strong finish, and I think it was likely going to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise after its record-setting opening weekend, but the losses it took by theaters closing in Tokyo, Osaka, and others over Golden Week (and beyond) cut it short. Still, strong finish despite that big setback that began in its second week of release.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Various Updates Posted!
So I believe that covers all the "extra" charts that involve a film either in release or that ended its run while I was gone. Tomorrow I'll update the Top 2021 Opening Weekend and Totals charts, and then resume the regular Weekend Actuals updates again starting on Monday (or Tuesday if Obon Festival delays the numbers).

I'll also work on the Box-Office History Charts for the Fast and Furious and My Hero Academia film franchises and post them at some point over the weekend or sometime next week.

My bad. I almost forgot to update the biggest film of the year! The film ended its run a couple weeks back. The final Evangelion film was a massive hit, and received the proper farewell the classic series deserved to go out on in theaters by its hugely devoted fanbase.

And perfect time to come back and update this too, because the final film is receiving its global release on Amazon Prime either later today or tomorrow (depending on your time zone, I think) in some 240 countries in 10 different dubbed languages (and Japanese of course). And I believe this also includes many of the original voice cast members for the English dub from the original anime, which many weren't expecting to make it back. So kudos to everyone involved with making this a reality (and so soon!).

Tokyo Revengers has proved to be one of the most successful "original" (i.e. no other films in the franchise released before it) WSJ films ever. The manga has been a major breakout smash this year, (over 14 million copies sold so far), so maybe not surprising based on that, but it still is. It's likely going to break ¥4 billion, making it the SECOND highest-grossing "original" WSJ live-action film behind just Rookies, and third "original" overall behind Demon Slayer and Rookies. Let me know if that makes sense.

My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission was added to the Opening Weekend list. Very impressive opening weekend, much higher than its two predecessors not just over its first four-days, but also over the traditional 2-day opening weekend (up 58% over the first film and 60% over the second film, respectively). Corpse, Tokyo Revenger isn't WSJ, it's WSM (kodansha) :P

 I'm going back on break. Kidding. It has been removed from the list.

Top Grossing 2021 Films is about to be posted. Let me know if I may have missed something that earned between ¥500-¥999 million between July 4th and August 9th. I don't think I did, but I also didn't scour 6 weeks worth of websites to come across one that may have fallen through the cracks.

And again, big thanks to mark66 and everyone else who shared weekend figures and other data while I was away. That was a big time saver in updating this list.

LET ME KNOW IF YOU SPOT ANY ERRORS, PLEASE.

Top Grossing Films of 2021 has been updated, finally! LET ME KNOW IF I MISSED ANYTHING (especially films that are above ¥500 million but below ¥1 billion) OR IF THERE ARE ANY ERRORS.

Also, this past week has been Obon Festival, so look for about everything in release right now (highlighted but not too old) to see significant jumps in the next update. Just checking the usual locations a few times this week, it's been a very good week for about everything.

THEY WILL!!!

Thanks Corpse for the updates!

Guys do you have any predictions about Slam dunk new movie? It is being written and directed by Takehiko inoue.

Slam dunk is one of the most influential and popular sports manga, and Takehiko inoue is highly respectable mangaka in japan. The staff for the movie also looks absolutely stacked.

Slam dunk got a new edition with covers and restructured volumes (from 31 to 20) and it placed 4th in 2018 oricon.Despite the manga end in 1996.

I think 10BN Japan is a safe bet.

10B is a lot. I think 5B is a safe bet.

Huge manga sales does not necessarily translate into comparably huge box office numbers. I believe Demon Slayer is the lone exception so far with a popular manga adaptation managing to exceed ¥10 billion. One Piece is much more popular than Slam Dunk, and its most recent films still don't gross much more than ¥5 billion.

Slam Dunk has that "classic" status set in Japan and has remained very much an extremely relevant&beloved series in japan through the years. The re-edition in 2018 sold huge too.

If the movie works standalone to attract newer fans to the series (and is good, obviously) I'm joining in on 10B+. Very good feelings on this revival. I think it's going to work out great.

Any yet with all that 10B is still too high. Most (if not all) posters will be ready to join 10b+ club if they "know" what audience the movie is certainly going to draw.

¥10 billion for Slam Dunk is possible. I wouldn't call it a safe bet, but assuming it's good/great and they have a strong marketing strategy (like the final Evangelion had this year) to boost repeat viewings, it's possible.

I wouldn't anticipate nor dismiss it yet though because ¥10 billion is rarely guaranteed. Half the films that get there aren't expected to prior to opening (or well into their runs even).

I haven't looked it up yet, but has Toho been announced as the distributor? They're almost a must, or have to be on board in some manner for ¥10 billion to be achievable (like how Aniplex partnered with them with Demon Slayer, and Khara with the final Evangelion).

If Toho isn't the distributor (or co-distributor) it drastically lowers the potential. Toho owns Toho Cinemas (busiest chain), so their own films can greatly benefit if the timing is right, while others with a weaker presence at their locations can be at a big disadvantage. (Just look what Toho's boycott of Disney's releases has done to Disney's films this year. They're basically DOA and may go the whole year without a single ¥1 billion ($10 million) earner)).

I don't think details about the distributor are known yet. Though it is handled by toei so I doubt there's going to be a problem securing wide distribution.

And the staff list that was revealed yesterday for this is pretty great. There's even people from IG working on it. Only real question mark is Inoue as director since I don't think he's ever done something like that, though they'll probably have someone helping him out anyways.

Am I reading that right? F9 opened on nearly twice as many screens as the other movies? No wonder it opened at #1.

Believe it or not, F9 is the first Hollywood film since Star Wars 9 to actually open at full potential where screens are concerned. Disney's films are being boycotted, so their films are playing significantly lower now (over 100 theaters less, and 300-400+ screens less). Almost any Disney tentpole would be getting 600, 700+ screens normally, with their biggest films getting up to the 800/900 range.

Big Hollywood films typically get 700-900 screens since they're dubbed and subbed, and usually play on most/all premium formats. A major theater in Tokyo typically has them on at least 4 screens just to accommodate the various formats. So the usual high-end theater count of 350-375 tends to result in 800/900 screens.

Warner Bros. has had some big local films (Rurouni Kenshin, Tokyo Revengers), but those don't need dubbed showings and aren't playing on most of the premium formats, so they don't get up into the higher screen counts like their big Hollywood releases do. And WB hasn't had any major Hollywood releases in some time (Godzilla vs. Kong was Toho in Japan), so we haven't seen an actual Hollywood tentpole from them in all this time. The Suicide Squad and/or Dune should get the high screen count treatment though when they open.

But do note that more screens doesn't equal bigger grosses by default. My Hero Academia 3 was on 321 screens, well less than half of F9's, yet it sold more tickets over the 4-day weekend. Demand outweighs screen counts.

I thought markk66 posted it on the last page, but looks like he was waiting for the weekend figures for F9/MHA3 to come in first (which were later due to the holiday).

I'll post them later today.

This says that Belle has made about 44,9M USD. Is this overestimating the gross or is this not updated.

That user estimates, so it's not official. There are no official numbers released in Japan outside of weekend actuals or numbers released by the studios, so take any other figures you may see online to be unofficial estimates.

But FranSpeech is good at estimating (pretty sure they've followed this thread, or may still do), so they're likely fairly close unless they didn't factor in that families tend to come out stronger during major holiday weeks, which can lower the average ticket prices a bit. I didn't track or estimate anything this week, haven't for months, but Belle was doing very well over Obon Festival, so it is probably somewhere near ¥5 billion (or ~$45 million) now.
