Note: Most films released before 1998 have estimated USD ($) totals.

*=re-release earnings included.

Since the last update:

>Jujutsu Kaisen 0 became the sole film in the 15th slot. I don't know if it has enough left to get it above The Last Samurai to climb one final spot up the chart, but it'll be worth watching.

>Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween cracked the Top 100 (99th) after its fourth weekend, knocking Pearl Harbor off the list. Once it breaks ¥7 billion (did on Monday), that leaves just one film in the Top 100 below the milestone.

Corpse, I don't know if I am right or wrong but Ocean Eleven numbers looks confusing. I meant it's ¥7.00B in Eiren (http://www.eiren.org/toukei/2002.html) while ¥6.90B in Kogyotsushin at No.99 (http://www.kogyotsushin.com/archives/alltime/) Am I missing something relevant?

I got another forecast from @YukiNara12 calling for ¥900M-¥1300M OW for Shin Ultraman and a final of ¥5.00B or more. Will be interesting to see how Anno reception is making people to forecast. I still find ¥500M OW still difficult. But well it's up to audience now...

Think 500M for the 3days is possible tbh, probably even more, PS looks p good to me and it's being screened a lot, 672k seats at usuals is a ton. But I don't think they're quite good enough for 1b.

Note: Entry determined by widest day of a film's opening weekend (typically first Saturday, but some are for Friday or Sunday).

As JustLurking mentioned, Shin Ultraman is receiving an ample amount of seating/showings to deliver a significant opening if the business is there. I still haven't really looked at how it's doing myself, so its performance, whatever that is, is going to be a surprise for me! Personally, I don't expect some big breakout or anything, but do expect it'll do pretty well.

Might be another case of an older film being updated to the correct number? I swear that ¥6.9 billion number is somewhat recent. I've looked at these numbers more than just about anyone I imagine over many years and it's always been at ¥7.0 billion in the past.

I double checked my list and the kogyotsushin list and there are no more differences. SO, if there happen to be another case of a difference in the future, we'll know there was some update made. (Contradicting Eiren's number is a bit odd, but sometimes Eiren *does* project a finish if a film is still playing when they release the annual box office data, so I'd take another number if it's a reliable source like kogyotsushin.)

And an interesting note: Shin Ultraman is the widest May release since I began this chart back in 2015. It's also the only May release on the entire list above! Looking at years prior to 2015, it might be the widest May release since Pirates 4 in 2011 or Rookies in 2009.

May is generally one of the weaker months for the Japan box-office (since it's post Spring Break and Golden Week, and schools are in session until mid-July in Japan), so it rarely has major films open in it, and we don't see films receive such a high amount of seating/showings.

OD was actually better than FB3 even, coolio. Don't think it's going to see the same weekend jump so I still stand by 1b 3days probably not happening but strong!

Good first day, indeed. I'd estimate... ~¥270-290 million. I also don't expect quite the weekend bump as FB3, but this should nearly guarantee a ¥500 million+ opening weekend (maybe ¥600 million+), and give it a three-day opening around ¥800/900 million, perhaps. And hey, if it manages a big enough weekend bump to get up to ¥1 billion in three days, all the better. Still think it's a stretch, but it'd certainly be awesome.

Its 3-day opening will come close to outgrossing (or might even) the highest known total for any past Ultraman film.

I don't even have a Biggest May Opening Weekend chart since the month rarely sees films open this well (especially over the past 10 years), but I'll try to put it together over the weekend. It won't be near the top of this list since there are some huge opening weekends in years past (Pirates 3, Spider-Man, Rookies, Spider-Man 3, The Da Vinci Code, and Pirates 4 are probably the Top 6), but a ¥500/600 million OW is pretty rare in May. It might be in the Top 10 overall (and it's definitely one of the highest in the last 10 years).

Shin Ultrama's Saturday is looking quite good.

Also, I hope DC handle a strong hold this weekend.

It's looking very good. I have little knowledge of Ultraman. I know OF Ultraman, of course, just not it's demographics and such since none have ever been successful at the box office before.

Does it have any young appeal? (Kids, teens, families.) I'd think it'd be more fanbase-driven, but the current Sat. bump suggests otherwise.

Now, these "Shin" entries of well-known iconic franchises (Evangelion, Godzilla) have branched out beyond expectations, so perhaps it's just bringing in a casual audience that never bothered with the regular films in the past.

I think I saw that a Shin Kamen Rider is also either finished or in the works, too. Makes me wonder its potential since the films in the franchise have declined in recent years. Seems like a good time to release a Shin entry.

Shin Kamen Rider with Hideaki Anno in the bag will be fun to see where it lands. Also a Kamen Rider movie not to miss to watch.

Shin Ultraman looks like a strong Night Shows. OD started to increase from 19:00 (100K) to 21:00 (144K). Applying Corpse Estimate, it's ahead of Shin Godzilla's OD

Shin Godzilla Performance:
OD : ¥221,064,800 / 152,030 visitors
OP : ¥624,610,700 / 412,302 visitors
OW: ¥845,675,500 / 564,332 visitors

The word "Shin" looks to have a strong vibe whether it's Godzilla (¥8.25B) or Evangelion (¥10.28B). Will be interesting to see where this one ends.

Very nice Saturday for Shin Ultraman. Not a huge bump over Friday, but big enough where it suggests it's appealing to some casual audiences.

I'll add its Saturday admissions to the Biggest Openers Since 2015 chart (the one with the hourly updates) later today. It's not very high on this chart, but it's still pretty impressive, especially for May (by far the biggest May opener since... 2011, right?)

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Shin Ultraman Debuts
Looking back at the month of May, Shin Ultraman is on track to deliver the biggest May OW since *at least* Men in Black 3 (¥573.6 million) in 2012. But assuming it beats that, which is should, then it'll achieve the biggest May OW since Pirates 4 in 2011.

Shin Ultraman supposedly passed 1 Billion Yen Monday as well. Apparently its legs are looking promising?

Not a fan at how some outlets, like Crunchyroll are reporting Shin Ultraman's three day opening to Shin Godzilla's two day opening.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Shin Ultraman Debuts
It's certainly a strong debut. Determining what legs may be so early can't really be done in the market. Sunday dropped more than expected, I feel (-24% is quite high in Japan), which could be an indicator that legs will be so-so, but it might also have better than expected weekdays. Monday was solid, so that's good, but first Mondays can also be a little deceiving as they're usually strong anyway.

Shin Godzilla had very strong legs (Summer / Obon Festival release, very strong critical and audience reception), and expecting a similar performance here seems doubtful since May/June are generally poor for the box-office (no holiday support, summer doesn't begin in Japan until mid-July, etc.).

Either way, though, even if legs are just normal, this opening is high enough to probably get it above ¥5 billion. That's pretty nuts, and almost 6x the highest known gross for an Ultraman film (none have ever gotten to ¥1 billion in the past).

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Shin Ultraman Debuts
You're the second source that believes that it can crank out 5 Billion Yen. I'm skeptical, but the more pundits that guess it make me optimistic. The other Ultraman movies haven't had nearly this wide of an opening though, correct?

No, this is easily the widest Ultraman release ever. They haven't opened very wide while I've tracked the box office (~2010-) and barely made any impact, really. A couple/few weeks in the Top 10 after a low debut (off the top of my head, I don't even recall one cracking the top 3) and that's it. And as mentioned none have ever reached the ¥1 billion mark, which Shin Ultraman basically did in 3-days.

With this debut, even below average/poor legs should almost guarantee it reaches ¥4 billion. And average/normal legs can get it to ¥5 billion. Since it broke-out though, it could generate some more interest it may not have gained otherwise and do a little more than that. We'll just have to watch it in the end. Japan's multipliers have a much greater range than most (all?) major markets.
