Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Ranking (01/29-30); Charts Update
Very impressive, indeed, especially when you consider it's earning more on a daily/weekly basis at this point than many others films with similar totals after six weeks. There are 14 films between ¥10-12 billion (more than 1/3 of all ¥10 billion earners), so it's going to leap-frog over all of them in a very short amount of time as it climbs up the all-time charts.

Total stands at ¥10,456,322,400 ($94.4 million) on 7,603,732 admissions, after a huge 76% seventh-weekend increase, earning another ¥419 million ($3.6 million) / 263,000 admissions.

Lol, right in the middle of my range. Cool. Seems I was right about it barely missing 10b on thursday, though I wonder if they were planning to just announce it on monday regardless even if it hadn't.

You didn't speak very kindly of Titanic and Avatar, almost devoid of any joy at all, so I figured you'd enjoy forgetting about them. :funny:

Thanks for that Spider-Man update. Not the blockbuster performance we were hoping, and Hollywood is in desperate need of having, but still very good.

The biggest categories to be nominated in!

I expect it'll receive a significant expansion/re-release this upcoming weekend or the next. I'll be one to watch soon. It was released way back in August in Japan, well before all the award buzz, and was largely forgotten at the box-office during its run and didn't gross much at all (just 200 million, as of the last available update.)

I don't even know of any Japanese film to get Best Picture, Best Director, AND Best Foreign-Language Film. Foreign-Language isn't "too" impressive, and would have had a minimal effect regarding its box-office potential, but the Best Picture and Best Director nominations are a very big deal. Adapted Screenplay is also big as it suggests the film has a fair chance at winning the big ones.

About 50% of the population is over 50 now, and 30% of the population is over 65, so films that receive significant award buzz can deliver impressive numbers at the box-office.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (02/05-06)
Weekend Ranking (02/05-06):

01 (01) Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Toho) Week 7
02 (02) The Confidence Man JP: Episode of Hero (Toho) Week 4
03 (---) What to Do with the Dead Kaiju? (Shochiku, Toei) NEW
04 (---) Ghostbusters: Afterlife (Sony) NEW

05 (04) Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony) Week 5
06 (03) Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (Sony) Week 2
07 (---) The Deer King: The Promised Journey With Yuna (Toho) NEW
08 (05) Noise (Warner Bros.) Week 2
09 (---) The 355 (Kino Films) NEW
10 (06) 99.9: Criminal Lawyer (Shochiku) Week 6

>Jujutsu Kasien 0 easily stays atop the box-office, experience a massive 76% increase in revenue (56% in admissions) in its seventh-weekend thanks to its 4DX/MX4D and Dolby Cinema expansion, as well as the third giveaway promotion kicking off on Saturday as well.

The now uber-blockbuster earned ¥419 million ($3.6 million) on 263,000 admissions over its seventh weekend, bringing its total up to a ¥10,456,322,400 ($94.4 million) and 7,603,732 admissions. It'll comfortably exceed ¥12 billion (~$105-110 million) and 8.5 million admissions, but will probably be aiming for closer to ¥13 billion (~$115 million) and 9-9.5 million admissions, especially since it has a fourth (and presumably final) giveaway coming up in two weeks.

>The Confidence Man JP: Episode of Hero fends off the two biggest debuts over the weekend, earning a further ¥130 million ($1.1 million) on 89,000 admissions in its fourth weekend, bringing its total up to ¥1,981,084,350 ($17.3 million) and 1,435,976 admissions. The drops just haven't been there to get it to ¥3 billion, and it'll finish a good bit below its predecessor, but a total north of ¥2.5 billion (~$22/23 million) is good.

>What to Do with the Dead Kaiju? debuts in third place in admissions, selling 88,000 admissions (barely shy of second place) to earn ¥122 million ($1.1 million) across 367 screens for Shochiku and Toei. Since Friday, it earned ¥170,683,410 ($1.5 million) on 124,524 admissions.

>Ghostbusters: Afterlife bombs in its fourth place debut, missing ¥100 million over the weekend frame. Since Friday though, it earned ¥126,773,070 ($1.1 million) on 87,529 admissions. Might be good for about ¥400 million ($3.5 million) or so. Just add it to the list of Hollywood bombs.

>Spider-Man: No Way Home slipped to fifth place. I have not come across its weekend gross/admissions, but its 31-day total stands at ¥3,658,897,740 ($32.7 million) and 2,409,149 admissions. It has surpassed The Avengers to become the MCU's 3rd highest grossing film now, and will surpass Avengers: Infinity War next week for second place. Endgame is far out of reach though.

>The Deer King: The Promised Journey With Yuta came in seventh place. No weekend figures available, but it grossed ¥75,471,000 ($655,000) on 54,350 admissions since Friday. It's not unusual for smaller anime films like this to come in low, but I have a feeling Toho was expecting a higher result here since they released it in over 300 theaters.

>The 355 debuted in ninth place. Likewise, no weekend figures, but since Friday it earned ¥53,902,310 ($468,000) on 40,316 admissions.

>House of Gucci, outside the Top 10, has brought its total up to ¥421,772,690 ($3.7 million) on 304,447 admissions. Mentioning it here for you, Jiffy!

NOTE: This will be the new format used for the "Weekend Actuals" until, or even if, the full weekend actuals are released again.

Drive My Car is expanding way up to 196 theaters this weekend. Seating/showings are still pretty low, but if it delivers this weekend, it'll receive more. It's going to be a pretty big performer, I expect. Not all at once. It'll be very prolonged. I expect it'll steadily grow over the next week or two, stabilize for awhile, then if it wins big at the Oscars, to grow further and stabilize for several weeks/months. If it actually wins Best Picture, we could see something quite special. Best Foreign-Language is expected, and while a big deal still that will add a ton to its box-office, a win elsewhere (BP or BD) would be a especially big (has it ever happened?)

West Side Story also opens this weekend in Japan, so great move by Disney to move it to February from December following all its Oscar nominations. A lot of Oscar films tend to open in February and March since if they score a lot of nominations, and then wins, it makes a big difference in a market like Japan.

Back to the Avatar/Titanic discussion. I expect Avatar 2 to drop from Avatar, but I doubt it's as big of a drop as Avatar saw from Titanic. It's hard to say how much, really.

I have a hunch that Drive My Car could win more than just Best International Feature, but I'd love to see it sweep at Japan Academy Prize first.

Talking about Japan Academy Prize, I find it quite interesting that the award follow the normal calendar (which include late release like Jujutsu Kaisen 0) rather than strange domestic box office calendar. I think it's time for Japan to revamp its box office calendar.

After Completing Bond, We got another big Franchise!!! Definitely will rank among the Top 10. I don't know the exact English Title for every film (I meant the official title) The Franchise is called "Otoko wa Tsurai yo", literally meaning "It's tough being a man" which has 50 films, the popular US Title is "Tora-san"

Hi,

The distribution rental for The James Bond movie Tomorrow never dies: ¥0.840B in 1998.

There are a number of mistakes. Some numbers are too low, and we have sources for this beyond just Eiren, such as news articles that announced higher totals than what this site has. And some are too high, as I haven't seen any other sites often used for reference (like kogyotsushin).
