Anything above ¥10B is a huge success for a Japanese Film. Although, we don't have any huge overseas markets other than China &Korea. That ¥25B is dependent on it's legging. Not something like Demon Slayer but at least half of it is still a easy win.

Agreed potential is there for any movie to breakout but ¥25B is a LOT to expect. I don't think that mark is likely, a number even much lower than ¥10B should be the barometer for its success. Easy way is to look at One Piece movies and see where they land and take that a success measure.

There are some aggressive polling regarding this like 158K votes for ¥45B, 43K votes for ¥50B, 21K votes for ¥55B, and 4K votes for ¥60B. But, this polls are meaningless unless you can mobilize the population, attract them. One of the biggest issue, is it's not a all age film. In Overseas, JJK just have only one advantage over Demon Slayer, i.e. Chinese Release which is planned for Autumn/Fall 2022. (Buyers has already been in talks). One bad advantage, is that it is likely to get banned in Korea. (Anime issue isn't solved yet). And the most worsted thing is that it might be released in Netflix in rest of the Overseas Market. (Seriously, no buyers have thought about releasing North America yet. Equalling release planned to limited or another $5M Your Name run).

So, the only overseas market that it can score is China. It's popular there (not like Demon Slayer but almost. Anime of the Year 2020, BilliBilli was JJK)

Very doubtful. It should perform closer to a traditional big fanbase film early on, and then see the sort of appropriate declines shortly into its run like those do (at least after the New Year holiday period). ¥5 billion, or a little more, is usually the ceiling for this sort of film. But, the series did manage to sort of breakout beyond what I'd consider "normal constraints" throughout the first half of 2021, suggesting it could do so at the box office, too.

But it has a decent list of negative/performance-limiting factors:

>Its demographics are going to be fairly limited, so it'll have to reply on significant turnout among its key demos. I haven't seen it discussed as a series that children are talking about in school, or are watching with their parents/grandparents at home, for example. And I don't see an 80-year-old grandparent reading the manga series. (It's pretty dark, violent, and gory for a typical WSJ title, especially a bit later on.)
>The manga sales have been great, even excellent, but certainly not out of this world or totally unprecedented. It was around "unprecedented" in the first half of 2021, but it's since dropped off a decent bit (still great, as said, just not unprecedented). This suggests while its fanbase is large, it's not something beyond what we'd normally expect.
>Also, while its opening/closing songs have been successful, they weren't topping the charts or reaching the masses like songs/soundtracks of future all-time performers at the box-office. This is typically key to really put up those truly uber-blockbuster numbers and more since it attracts casual moviegoers, or even those uninterested in movies at all. The Japanese will come out to see a film they know little/nothing about if a hugely popular song/soundtrack is associated with it.

So in short: Limited demographics, fanbase peak likely seen already and on the decline/stabalizing, and no outside (music as my example) medium to bring in outsiders. But there is evidence that it'll perform better than a normal big Shonen film would at the box office, just nothing really suggesting it'll become a high ranking, all-time sort of film. ¥5 billion should be the target, expected goal. And ¥10 billion should be the high-end, hopeful goal that is within reasonable expectations still. It would only be the second Shonen, WSJ title to ever reach that milestone. Anything higher will be a pleasant surprise, mainstream/casual moviegoer breakout.

Based on its first day (last Wednesday), and then its second Wednesday, there's no question it's one of the most heavily skewing female films in a while. I wish an audience demo share had been released for it, but I'd bet it's at that 90%+ female mark. Wednesdays can come pretty close (~70/80%+) to either Saturday/Sunday for them.

I'll to back and check Loved Like a Flower Bouquet to see how big its Wrdnesdays were, but I imagine What Do You Eat Yesterday? is the most female-driven since at least it, if not longer.

And since females continue to represent more and more of the moviegoer audience, if they find a particular film interesting, they can really propel them at the box office now.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was heavily skewing female, but I thought ladies' day wasn't a thing anymore now?

Toho Cinemas discounted Ladies' Day (every Wednesday) AND Toho Cinemas Day (the 14th of each month) to combine them into a more general Toho Cinemas Discount Wednesday at their locations. Now, with a few exceptions (mostly premium format showings), anyone can get a discounted ticket at their locations every Wednesday. So, while not specifically targeted towards females-only, they still benefit by coming out at Toho Cinemas on Wednesdays.

Aeon Cinemas doesn't appear to have it anymore though. And they haven't replaced it with a different benefit either. They're pretty all in on Mondays now.

Movix Cinemas and United Cinemas still have Ladies' Day. Didn't check chains below the Top 4, but some likely still do.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: December 2021 Release Schedule
In case anyone is going to ask about the COVID situation in Japan ahead of Winter and the Holiday Box Office Season, because of what's happening in some European countries right now:

Japan is faring incredibly well, posting their best numbers since the early days of the pandemic back in Spring/Summer 2020. The 7-Day Average has dropped, incredibly, below 200 now, <1% of what was happening back in July/August. Tokyo itself has only been recording 20/30 cases a day (and only 9 hospitalized in the entire city as of Tuesday). And on Sunday, there were no reported COVID-related deaths in the country, the first time since Summer 2020.

Japan was really, really slow rolling out the vaccine, barely even getting it to a respectable daily amount before the Olympics back in July. (And no nearly early enough to mitigate the record Summer numbers.) But since then, over 75% of the country is fully vaccinated now and that figure could break 85% by January. And like even before the pandemic began, a lot of Japanese wear masks in public as part of their daily lives already just out of normal health concerns.

So... there should be little/no worries concerning the box-office for the rest of the year, if ever again regarding COVID. *Fingers crossed*

Good early news regarding advance ticket sales for Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

The Mubichike card ticket design featuring Toge Inumaki sold out yesterday. There are 5 remaining designs (Gojo, Geto, Maki, Panda and, of course, Okkotsu).

https://tohoanimationstore.com/shop/r/r131/

The Mubichike card tickets are limited quantity, of course, but no exact figures of each design or as a group was released. The limited advance card ticket designs went on sale on October 15th (but only with a merchandise purchase), while the individual card ticket sales began last week on November 5th. The film opens on December 24th.

I thought with TOHO changing ladies' day female-heavy movies might not spike as much on wednesday as before, but I guess not. Didn't know other chains did the same though, thought it was a specifically toho thing.

That's pretty good to know, honestly surprising figures for a country that had so much of a late start on vaccines. Is Japan suffering from anti-vax narratives as much as most of the western world?

Not from what I can tell. At least not enough to hamper the vast majority of the population getting vaccinated.

They were only at 3% fully vaccinated at the beginning of June, but it was only because of the very slow rollout of the vaccines. But once the vaccine became easily available near the end of June/early July, they "shot up" all the way to 70% fully vaccinated in just 4 months time and are now over 75% fully vaccinated.

Cases as a result, as well as continuing their normal hygienic practices (namely mask-wearing in crowded areas, such as trains/buses) that were already apart of daily life pre-COVID, dropped over 99% from August to November. Naturally being so high now though the daily doses have dropped a bit, but it looks likely that they'll break 80% fully vaccinated by January, if not 85%.

West Side Story moves from December 10th, 2021 to February 11th, 2022, just a couple days after I posted the December release schedule! I'll repost the December release schedule near the end of the month.

Nightmare Alley was a December 17th, 2021 release, but was moved to February 25th, 2022 before I posted the release schedule. However, it was also just moved back further, this time to March 25th, 2022 a couple days ago.

So Disney (distributing both in Japan) looks like they're going to be giving their films delayed releases in Japan once again after really struggling in the market, if these moves are anything to go by, of course. If they're released in Japan AFTER they're already on Disney+, I'm guessing they'll avoid any boycotts.

Encanto is still opening on November 26th though, but no theaters have it listed yet. This is quite unusual this close to release day, so I'm guessing it might be too late to move it and wouldn't expect much from it as it mostly seems like it's being dumped. It'll likely be boycotted at the start, and then pulled from theaters within a month since it has a very short 30-day theatrical window and will miss all the holidays.

Slow weekend with no major wide openers, not too unusual for early/mid-November sometimes.

>Sumikko Gurashi: The Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night holds well in its second weekend, and managed to edge its way from second place to top the weekend box-office. Its weekdays were abysmal since it's such a young-skewing film, but if it can score similar holds like this, or better, moving forward over its weekends, it could be heading towards a reasonable total near ¥1 billion.

>Eternals fell hard and barely missed first place again. Frontloading comes standard for most Marvel/DC films, so no surprise here, but failing to double up on its first three days after its second weekend is pretty rough. All that bad news said... it be on the cusp of ¥1 billion after next weekend, and if does miss, it'll get there a day or two afterwards, giving Disney their first successful film in two-years. Expect a total around ¥1.2/1.3 billion (~$11 million).

>Sword Art Online Progressive had a giveaway event this weekend, so it managed to almost remain flat in its third weekend. It's also receiving a 4DX expansion as expected (not sure the weekend without checking), and I'm sure at least another giveaway will be scheduled at some point , so trying to project where it'll finish is tricky. I think Aniplex is aiming to get it above ¥1.5 billion though, so expect a finish at least at that mark.

>I'm going to lump And, the Baton Was Passed, What Did You Eat Yesterday?, and I Don't Have Any Money Left in My Retirement Account! into this section. All three films have been performing very well, especially over the weekdays (skewing older and/or towards females), and their weekends so far have been strong as well. As a result, all three films are going to exceed the ¥1 billion mark. Baton will probably even go as high as ¥1.2/1.3 billion, while the other two should finish around ¥1.1 billion. Nothing crazy here, but having three more films get above the mark just before the end of the year is very nice.

Isn't "Sumikko Gurashi: The Unexpected Picture Book/Secret Child" the 2019 movie and "Sumikko Gurashi: The Magical Child Of The Blue Moonlit Night" the 2021 movie or did I get something wrong?

What is the status of Encanto in Japan? Has Disney reached a deal with theaters yet or still a potential boycott is still ongoing?

It's opening as normal! As is The King's Man next month. The decision happened shortly after Disney delayed West Side Story from December to February.

Shang-Chi and Free Guy both opened as normal (no chains boycotting their debuts), but they were both dropped by major chains in their fifth weeks of release due to their theatrical window. If the same happens with Eternals in the coming weeks, I'm going to assume Encanto will be subject to being pulled from theaters early (it has an even shorter theatrical window of just 30 days) as well, but we'll have to wait to really know for certain.

That is great news for West Side Story because I think Disney realize a delayed release in Japan would be beneficial. I hope for 2022 Disney will also return to the traditional theatrical window in Japan.

Next One Piece film scheduled for August 6th, 2022! The heart of Summer Vacation and a week before Obon Festival. Thank God they're going back to Saturday. Big fanbase films such as this burn off a lot of demand on Friday ahead of the weekend. And while that doesn't affect the eventual total, it does lower the opening weekend a good bit.

Seems likely it'll be officially announced during/at the end of the 1,000th episode broadcast this weekend.

More should be revealed during Jump Fiesta next month too, I imagine, but decent chance based on the name and title logo it'll be based on the character Shanks. And given how the story has progressed in recent months/years, they could use this film as an opportunity to portray a canon story here. (Would also go be fitting since more anime films are favoring canon material than original now.) Certainly exciting for fans!

Pretty boring weekend this weekend. Unfortunately, the third and final Mole Song movie is bombing and won't even debut at #1 (that'll go to Sumikko Gurashi again), and may struggle to crack the Top 3.

I, and others, were expecting a drop from the second film (which itself dropped 35% from the first film), but figured that a ¥1 billion+ total was mostly guaranteed (the second film grossed ¥1.43 billion) even if a sizable drop occurred again. However, it's not even going to hit ¥100 million this weekend (¥80 million could be asking too much), so it might end up dropping ~50% from the last film's total. Toho isn't immune to disappointments, or bombs, as their constant success and near monopoly on the box-office suggests, but they are pretty rare occurrences on this level.

So, another slow November weekend. Some Novembers are just really slow, a couple of the worst weekends ever are recorded in the month.

Thankfully, next weekend *should* be pretty exciting. The Arashi film goes wide (it's been selling out/close to selling out all its showings almost every day since it began playing exclusively at Dolby Cinemas back on November 3rd), which should liven things up a lot if their very large fanbase turns out strong as the current limited release is suggesting they will. And Encanto is opening wide. November is usually a mixed month for animated/family films (only one holiday between now and New Year), and the 30-day theatrical window will likely compromise/end its run early, but it might still manage an acceptable opening (hopefully).

Atleast December should provide some fun and make up for the boring november, thankfully. I don't expect the JJK movie will be anywhere near Mugen Train, but it should still be a very damn strong opener which could snowball into interesting legs with relatively little competition. Also still pretty curious about how Matrix will do, although I fear it will probably be quite disappointment relative to the previous installments.
