I think you mentioned sometime that films that skew older tend to have very strong weekdays, right? Definitely seems the case with this monday for TG.

Yeah, older-skewing films generally have strong weekdays. Looking at Monday, I'd say Mon.-Fri. look on pace to come close to its opening weekend (Sat.-Sun.), so that's good.

Now, if it's skewing *too* old (which its avg. ticket price over the weekend pretty much debunks already since seniors pay less), that can be a negative since the weekend drops can suffer, but I wouldn't be concerned there. For one, the avg. ticket price shows no/little signs it's skewing too old (by too old, I mean 2/3 over 50). And second, I imagine it's going to perform similarly overall as the most recent M:I films since Tom Cruise remains the biggest Hollywood draw in the market, and likely share much of the same audience. Top Gun 2 is likely attracting a broader audience (given its OW is noticeably higher than the recent M:I films), but enough will be Tom Cruise fans that I don't imagine we'll see a huge shift in legs. But we'll see! This will be one of the more interesting films to track this year now.

I'll have the 2022 Charts Updated tomorrow.

How probable is ¥10B for TGM? The ratings it has received across many platforms looks like "once in a blue moon". I meant I haven't seen any high score for any Hollywood Film in last 10 years. Bohemian Rhapsody looks close in one site but far behind in others. Looking at the archives of WoKJ, I noticed how difficult was it forecast an ending of a film like Bohemian Rhapsody, starting an OP results at some ¥300M and ending at ¥13,000,000,000+ ending. (I noticed that you have originally forecast ¥2-3B, then ¥5.5B-¥6B, then...... tbc)

Now, will TGM repeats history? What's it's probability? Can we compare results with Tom Cruise 's "The Last Samurai" as in comparison with "The Last Samurai" (¥13.70B), TGM OW was 130% higher than that of "The Last Samurai"?

Will it be fair to compare? Or market still need to wait until Dec? (Though, TGM has complete June will no holidays, no competitors as Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroes audience doesn't attract TGM's audience)

Since this is a sequel..., even though it's 30+ years later, and stars Tom Cruise (biggest Hollywood draw in Japan, likely ahead of Depp now), I wouldn't expect it to develop some crazy legs to get it in ¥10 billion territory. Bohemian Rhapsody, besides being "original", also had the musical aspect of it to allow it to reach the non-moviegoer crowd which makes the biggest difference in Japan. I don't know what would attract non-moviegoers to Top Gun 2. Being well-received can help, of course, but that mostly attracts casual moviegoers, not the non-moviegoers. There are very well-received films that are surprisingly frontloaded or only managed regular legs in the market.

I'd say comparing it to some of the Mission: Impossible films will be the best bet here, at least until we see if it manages to breakout with non-moviegoers like Bohemian Rhapsody or The Last Samurai in your examples. If its second weekend drop is under 15/20%, for instance, then we might be in store for an especially leggy performance.

I know this is largely a "I don't know, we need to wait and see" response, but that sort of comes with predicting a lot of films in Japan. Most ultra-leggy performances, and many of the top grossing films in the market, are unpredictable.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/28-29); Charts Update
Been following Shin Ultraman pretty closely and it looks like it's doing fairly well. Really hoping for a 5 Billion Yen number, but if nothing else it'd be nice if it took out Fantastic Beasts. Been putting up some comparison charts of recent/similar kaiju/giant monster films. Would love an extra pair of eyes:

3rd Weekend Comparisons:

Shin Godzilla:
3.36 Billion Yen/$32.6 Million/>2.59M attendance
Shin Ultraman:
2.71 Billion Yen/$21.2 Million/1.81M attendance
Godzilla: King of the Monsters:
2.21 Billion Yen/$20.5 Million/1.51M attendance
Godzilla 2014:
2.05 Billion Yen/$20.1 Million/1.42M attendance
Godzilla vs. Kong:
1.40 Billion Yen/$12.9 Million/0.90M attendance

Good work, dude!

Shin Ultraman is doing well, and should get above ¥4 billion. I really doubt it does ¥5 billion now though. Weekend drops around 30% are okay, but not strong enough. Now, if its holds begin to get closer to 20%, then perhaps, but it'll need to do it this week while the numbers are still relatively high.

Either way, big performance / surprise here.

I see the difference now. But, according to me, I think exceeding the Original "TG (1986)"'s ¥6.7B should be an incredible results. Original One open with ¥447,430,600 (108 screen) in 2-days Opening Week. I won't be disappointed if it crosses ¥5.0B or reach close to ¥6.0B but want to see if it has any possibility of crossing it's original or not. Weekdays are running excellent and I believe that 2nd Weekend should give us a possible range where it might end.... Whatever, it's an incredible run since CoVid-19 for Hollywood.

Thanks for answering and sharing, Kanroji. I'll add both Toei releases to the 2022 charts next week.

Hello again, there's a new DBS movie coming out soon so I've returned.

I still have that Mimorin site bookmarked since last time. The number that it displays is now what percentage of the actuals? I believe I was told 65-70% back when the last one came out in December 2018.

Is it known what the theatre count will be yet for it? Broly was in 467?

Any expectations or predictions?

Well, in terms of theaters tracked versus theater count for a major wode release, it's still around 70% (75% sometimes), but that doesn't equal the percentage of ticket sales / gross. They've been accounting for a higher share than normal in recent months (half year+). Either rural locations are falling behind/haven't caught up yet, or urban locations are "overperforming." Maybe a little of both.

It's going to open in 371 standard theaters. But the overall count, assuming it gets premium formats (haven't checked), will be higher. Broly was at 467 locations, yes.

I'm expecting a drop from Broly (from my perspective, this was likely the peak for the franchise in terms of quality, reception, and fan appeal), but a gross comparable to Battle of Gods or Resurrection F should be doable.
