Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (10/16-17); Charts Update
Thanks!!

Yeah ¥6B sounded like too much for it and to be fair ¥750M in distributor income is a good result, the WW result of $49M that Kanroji mentioned is also a good result, but I get that the reputation that the movie has is not directly tied with it's box office performance

Also I recall that Genma Taisen (kinda a spiritual predecessor to Akira) was a big (?) Hit with over ¥1B in distribuitor income, so the Doraemon movies were not the only anime movies finding success in the early 80s (and late 70s) the Yamato movies were also pretty big and the Gundam films too to a lesser degree

I haven't seen it mentioned here but Demon Slayer's 2nd season has been pulling absolutely huge ratings on Japanese television. It topped the weekly anime ratings for its debut surpassing even the legendary Sazae-san (https://www.videor.co.jp/tvrating/2021/10/45617.html) and remained in second place last week (https://www.videor.co.jp/tvrating/).

Keep in mind that this is despite airing at 11.15 pm on a Sunday.

Part II isn't confirmed. But, Warner Bros Japan is ready to make a sequel which is likely to happen after season 2 officially get announced, may be late 2022/Early 2023. But, Tokyo Revengers likely to follow a anime film if they are following the footsteps of Jujutsu Kaisen or Demon Slayer.

Note that Season 2 is already on development.

Another Tokyo Revengers film is quite likely given how successful the first one was.

Warner Bros. tends to favor live-action films though (Death Note, Gintama, Rurouni Kenshin, etc.), so the next Tokyo Revengers is likely to be live-action again. They probably get more of the revenue share by doing live-action films, too. After theater shares are taken out, they'd only have to share the rest with whatever company (Shueisha, Kodansha, etc.) that owns the rights to the property, and not with an animation studio/production team, etc.

And in general, live-action can take less time, money, and effort, especially if a series is set in modern day Japan which makes it simple to film on sight.

Note: Warner Bros. used to own what is now Aeon Cinemas (formally Warner Mycal Cinemas) in Japan, meaning like how Toho gets the revenue made from their Toho Cinemas chain (especially profitable for their own films), Warner Bros. used to get all of the money made at their theaters prior to selling them to Aeon Co. back in 2012.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (10/16-17); Charts Update
Some release date were (finally) revealed in recent days, mostly Western titles, so here they are:

Matrix Resurrections and Kamen Rider: Beyond Generations are opening December 17th, 2021.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is opening February 4th, 2022.
Sing 2 is opening March 18th, 2022.

Warner Bros. commits Matrix to December. It's an established franchise, so opening day-and-date should be fine.

And both Ghostbusters and Sing are going to 2022, which is good, especially for Sing (a week from Spring Break, and 5 weeks from Golden Week).

Spider-Man: No Way Home and Shin Ultraman are really the only two bigger films that still have "TBD Winter" release windows, but it's looking likely both will end up in 2022 as well now that December is pretty well-scheduled. Each weekend in December now has at least 2-3 notable wide openers, and 1 "priority" film (a film likely to take the majority/vast majority of biggest screens).

December 10th is really the only date left for either of them to take if they want the advantage of getting the largest/widest release possible (they'd presumably get top billing over West Side Story), but with Matrix now opening on the 17th, and Jujutsu Kaisen on the 24th, the openers before them are going to experience some heavy cuts to their screen/showtime counts, so Dec. 10th isn't an ideal spot for a tentpole. Spider-Man opening a week after Venom 2 (Dec. 3rd) would also be a little weird given they're both from the same brand and studio.

So Western Films has finally withdrawn/ avoid clashing with JJK Movie 0. Good to see the difference in one-two weekend. Other than that, I can imagine that every weekend in December gonna be big without affecting each other.

Don't the time to put together Weekend Estimates today, but here's a quick look at the weekend:

The latest Pretty Cure film (the 30th entry in the overall series) opened at #1. I can't recall any Pretty Cure films ever debuting at #1, at least not among the last dozen or so films over the past 5+ years. This should be pretty easy to check though before the Weekend Actuals tomorrow for me to say with certainty.

Overall, drops for the holdovers were a bit higher than normal. A lot of 35-40% declines, with a few (Dune, Lupin's Daughter, In the Wake) even dropping over 40%. So a bit of a bumpy weekend for the holdovers. Free! The Final Stroke - Part 1 continues to hold very well though, off around 15%.

The MX4D expansion for Belle wasn't successful, as expected. It just came way too late in its run (which was nearing its end), and it was barely able to stay inside the Top 15 (at #15) with a drop around 25% (although this will probably be more like 20% due to the higher ticket prices). The expansion should have occurred back in September over Silver Week.

So, pretty slow weekend that October/November is usually known for. Many, if not most, of the weakest weekends are from mid-October through mid-November. HOWEVER, the last weekend in October, next weekend, has a couple films that should liven the off-season months up a little.

But due to Demon Slayer breaking the record books many times over last year, October/November are going to be WAY down versus 2020.

Well, not an impressive weekend. I couldn't find a previous Pretty Cure film that ever debuted at #1, so that's pretty telling here. Granted... this is one of the better openings in the 30 film overall series in recent years, but this usually isn't enough to take the #1 spot. Good for it and the franchise thought to have what I believe is their first #1 debut!

Also... the holdovers largely disappointed over the weekend with four films dropping over 40% and the best hold only at 34%. This time of year is weak, the weakest of the year, but still rough to look at!

>Tropical-Rouge! Precure the Movie: The Snow Princess and the Miraculous Ring, the 30th film in the overall Pretty Cure film franchise, debuted atop the box-office to become the first in the franchise to ever do so as mentioned above. This crossover film sold a solid 141,071 admissions over the weekend across 237 screens. This is about the average in the franchise opening weekend range, but it is higher than many in more recent years (e.g. it's up a very impressive 47% over the last film back in the Spring).

>Baragaki: Unbroken Samurai had a very rough second weekend hold, but thanks to some solid weekdays (8% less than its opening weekend), its two-week total is a little more respectable. Still, this drop rules out it coming near ¥1.5 billion now, and it'll likely settle for around ¥1.2 billion ($10/11 million) or so. Not a disappointing result, but certainly below expectations given its cast and marketing. Maybe some interest was lost since it was delayed for, I think, a full year or more due to COVID.

>No Time to Die held alright, but again, these mid-30% drops are just average and quickly lowers the ceiling when they're happening every weekend. Good news: It outgrossed Quantum of Solace already and will surpass Casino Royale next weekend.

>Dune also had a rough second weekend, and combined with meh weekdays, any very small chance it may have had at reaching ¥1 billion are gone. It's probably going to be lucky to reach ¥700 million ($6-6.5 million).

>Masquerade Night was never really able to achieve the holds it was needing in order to reach ¥4 billion, and the drop this weekend rules that milestone out now. It's still going to finish strong, likely above F9: The Fast Saga, with around ¥3.7 billion ($33/34 million) and finish in 8th for 2021.

>Ron's Gone Wrong rounds out the Top 10, bombing pretty spectacularly. It sold just 28,899 admissions over its first three-days in release on 370 screens. It wasn't going to do well or anything, but this is another very, very bad result caused by the ongoing day-and-date release issue in the market this year.

>Free! The Final Stroke - Part 1 fell outside the Top 10, but given its great hold this weekend and because we have some Kyoto Animation fans here, I'm going to provide an estimate for its updated total when I update the Top Grossing Films: 2021 chart after this post!

I misspoke when I said this weekend's release (highlighted) is the first Pretty Cure film to open at #1. It's the second! Still very impressive though for the franchise. The first was 2011's Suite Pretty Cure? Take Back! The Heart Binding Miracles Melody?

I'm going to skip compiling the totals for this franchise. Around a dozen or so (maybe a couple more) have grossed over ¥1 billion (typically barely so), so they'll be a lot of estimating for the remaining films.

Note: One film was being released a year from 2006-2009 (2005 had two), but since then, two films are released each year: one in the Spring (frequently mid/late-March, but sometimes April) and one in the Fall (late-October). Also note: Some of the titles may not be the most common. In the past, I've taken "The Movie" out of some of the titles or have shortened them a little bit to fit the charts a little better. So if there are any questions there, just ask.

The third MHA movie is opening in the U.S. this Friday, just to remind any U.S. fans here!

The first two films both opened in the middle of the week in the U.S. (the first movie on a Tuesday, the second movie on a Wednesday), so the new film is the first to open over the weekend frame itself. How high can it open?

The first movie (Two Heroes) only played in 500 theaters, so probably not a good comparison. The second movie (Heroes Rising) played in over 1,000 theaters and opened to $9.2 million in its first 5-days (Wed.-Sun.). Presumably, World Heroes' Mission will be given even more theaters, so is a $10 million+ 3-day opening weekend doable? Pre-sales have been available since August, I believe. (Note: It is NOT streaming.)

Should be interesting. MHA is arguably the biggest anime/manga in the U.S. right now based on its impressive manga sales. It's very dominant on the U.S. Graphic Novel Monthly Bookscan chart, typically taking up to half of the Top 20 spots about every month.

MHA Third Film should open as high as $15M. We can even see double numbers. MHA preview numbers are suggestively to be between $2.5 to $3M which is clearly not enough to target Demon Slayer. Corpse, I have a thought were does James Bond Franchises place in Japan. Numbers earlier to 1980 are technically much difficult to be found.

Indeed. I just wish they were closeer to me and not always in LA!

Also, should definitely mention, the US release this weekend is also including a giveaway, which I believe is the same special manga that was given out in Japan when it was released there, too. Very cool.

And Kanroji Mitsuri, I'll be working on the James Bond franchise stats from now until the time of the next update on the Biggest Film Franchise chart. This will be several months away, but that gives me a lot of time to dig up any numbers that may be out there for the older films.

First key visual for Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was released last night. The tweet already has over 200,000 likes.

Image

For those that watched season one of the anime, this movie is adapting the prequel manga that takes place before the main story (6 years ago, I believe). The events in this prequel are closely related to what has happened already, and what's to come soon. The character Yuta Okkutsu that you hear talked about pretty often throughout season one is the main character in the prequel. And you'll get to know a lot more about Gojo and Geto, as well as what's up with Megumi.

The manga has sold over 30.5 million copies this year in Japan, and has 55 million copies in circulation after just 3.5 years in serialization.
