>Kingdom II: To Distant Lands kicks off the first weekend of Summer Vacation with a real bang, selling 527,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 497 screens, and an incredible 933,812 admissions over its four-day holiday weekend. The OW is 50% higher than its predecessor, and even with standard legs for this time of year, is likely enough to get it above ¥6 billion with potential of ¥7 billion and 4.5-5 million admissions.

>Minions: The Rise of Gru had to settle for second place, but it's a silver medal to be extraordinarily proud of. Selling 481,052 admissions over the weekend frame across 387 screens, it sold more tickets than any previous film in the Despicable Me/Minions franchise! And over the four-day holiday weekend, it sold 724,725 admissions. In revenue, it ranks third, behind Despicable Me 3 (by 11%) and Minions (just 3%). Expect a total around ¥5 billion and 4 million admissions.

>Top Gun: Maverick weathered the large decline in seating/screens it took from the two major openers, dropping just 16% to sell a further 193,270 admissions to bring its overall admissions up to 5,871,432 as of Monday. As noted, it's locked to exceed the ¥10 billion milestone now to achieve uber-blockbuster status, and has its sights on ¥11 billion or a bit more now. Among the 40 ¥10 billion earners, including it when it gets there, it'll join an exclusive club of just five films to get to the mark without a major holiday period in its first sixty days in release.

>Thor: Love and Thunder saw an epic collapse, dropping over 60% in its second weekend. It's very rare to see weekend drops over 60%, and as such, the film is going to finish much less than its very good opening suggested last week. Expect a finish around ¥1.5 billion, or possibly less. This will still be like 25/30% above Ragnarok, which is nice, but this frontloading... definitely a concern for Marvel/DC films as it's getting worse.

>Lightyear experienced an awful third weekend, and likewise, its potential total has to be brought way down. I'm guessing it'll finish with around ¥1.3 billion... This is almost a 90% decline from Toy Story 4 and Toy Story 3, and perhaps the biggest sign of Disney's decline in Japan.

>Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is performing as expected now, and if Toei keeps it on enough screens/seats throughout Obon Festival next month, should reach ¥2.5 billion. This is down 37% versus its predecessor, so Toei may be questioning going the CGI animation route here since CGI films in long-established animated franchises typically disappoint.

And Lightyear has already fallen off too far to save even with the upcoming holidays, but Disney just killed any chance it had to at least recover a *little* bit. It's going to Disney+ on August 3rd (week from Obon Festival...), so it'll only get 29-32 days in theaters in Japan.

Its run might come to a close by the end of the month, actually. I can see theaters just dropping it on July 29th. No reason to wait any longer (they dropped Dr. Strange 2 a couple days ahead of its Disney+ launch). So... it might be down over 90% versus the last two Toy Story films.

Makes me question Avatar: The Way of Water's potential here more and more. It'll need a good 3-4 months in theaters (more, really), so Disney launching it on Disney+ before then will kill its potential as theaters will drop it. If Disney puts it on Disney+ before March/April, it'll miss Spring Break and Golden Week.

I think Avatar 2 is probably the exception that will be safe from D+ for a while.

I'm not really sure because it was through Google translate but I think Super Hero is having another giveaway starting from July 23rd. Something about 200,000 game cards, so I think they're giving away a Gohan Beast/Orange Piccolo card for Super Dragon Ball Heroes.

Not sure what kind of impact that will have.

It wouldn't take too much to achieve a weekend increase since it's somewhat low right now, but it's hard to say.

At the very least, it should net it a decent/good hold, I imagine. Probably a last boost to get it to ¥2.5 billion, because it'll take big consecutive hits on July 29th (Jurassic World) and August 6th (One Piece) that will take it outside of the Top 10 then, I believe.

Note: This is for FRIDAY openers only. Before 2006 (and 2018 for local films) most films opened on the traditional Saturday.

Haven't come across its 3-day admissions yet (just the 2-day and 4-day), so the admissions above are an estimate using an avg. ticket price close to the 2-day (4-day is likely too low since it was below the 2-day).

Looks like -4% sat for TG2 on mimorin. With friday even being up and the monday holiday this week will barely even be down from last week if at all. Rest of holdovers didn't fare very well though.

I have a feeling the holds are a bit better than they appear. Since Aeon isn't being tracked now (hope it's not permanent, but it's looking that way...), I believe their locations would be performing better than usual this time of year. Most of their locations (roughly 25% of all theaters) are located in malls or shopping areas and tend to attract more families and children. So, since we're into Summer Vacation now, these locations would probably be performing above average.

No proof, of course, until we see the actual holds on Monday.

That said, the Top Gun hold is indeed amazing. Sunday *should* be down a bit more since last Sunday was boosted a bit (Sundays before a holiday Monday typically are), but we might be looking at a sub-10% hold. I'll use that as a "guess" (don't want to say estimate since not having Aeon's admissions available makes me weary of that) and see where it ranks on the Biggest Ninth Weekend Chart in the next post.

Rough estimate (or guesstimate, really) here until we get a better idea of how to estimate when excluding Aeon Cinemas in the count. But if this is anywhere near accurate come Monday, I believe a total above ¥11 billion is basically locked up.

I think blogger mentioned that they would take a while and work on it over the break/holidays, so not permanent (for now) but probably not going to be fixed too soon either.

Would be great if holds were even better.

I hope it's fixed before Jurassic World: Dominion opens next week (even if it would drop versus Fallen Kingdom, it'll still be really big), but if not then, then definitely before One Piece Film Red opens on August 6th since it *should* break the August OW record, which will be fun to track fully.

Speaking of One Piece Film Red, have you (or anyone else) come across any opening weekend giveaway news? I see a lot of tie-ins and collaborations (marketing is probably pretty high), but no usual manga giveaway that the last four films received. I don't know if it needs one, but do find it interesting if they skip it this time.

That said, I see a lot of music related gifts or giveaways, since this one is so musically focused with 4 or 5 singles already (saw that 3 were in the top 10 anime charts recently) from Ado, voice of Uta in the film, and some guest collaborators, so maybe there's a CD giveaway already announced or planned. "Gyakkou", in particular, looks like it's become/becoming a hit.

Yeah it's called "Volume 4 billion", 3 million copies. Info is in this issue so out officially tomorrow I think.

Best performing ado song for the movie is Shinji Dai as far as I saw on oricon digital singles IIRC (the movie's theme song) which did well, the others did eh.

I'm a big One Piece fan, so I try to steer away from any searches that could lead to spoilers. With the series about to enter its final arc, I know spoilers and theories are everywhere.

Hi, is there any reported figure on the new Osomatsu animated film? I know it's a limited release and all, but was wondering how it did.

Just checked recent updates from my source line. I couldn't find any noticeable update. Well, I think ¥100M goal seem reasonable. I will update if numbers get reported

Looks like the holds this weekend were indeed higher than normal, but it's not too unusual for weekends following a holiday weekend (holiday Monday) to be weaker in general. As long as most films recover afterward, it's all good. But I am concerned about the COVID cases going so high in recent days/weeks potentially having a negative impact. I don't want to link this past weekend to it, but if next weekend is also down a lot, then it needs to be considered.

And bullza, that should be enough to get it to ¥2.5 billion. Might be a bit of a crawl and require most/all of Obon Festival to get there, but I see no reason it shouldn't as long as it keeps just enough seats over the next 3-4 weeks.

It could do, Broly made an extra ¥167 million after its seventh weekend. The same amount for Super Hero would make it finish at ¥2,487 million.

But Super Hero has actually been making more than it recently. Broly made ¥199 million between its 5th and 7th weekend whereas Super Hero has made ¥233 million.

I suppose because it had no holiday in front of it it hasn't burned through its audience as fast.

When will it no longer receive actuals?

I think they just pushed harder for Super Hero with giveaways than they did for Broly actually, don't remember exactly what they did back then though.

There's a few movies up week over week today. How come?

Seems to be an animated/kid movie thing.
