Is there any indication that it can have legs and go beyond 10b, Get close to Jujutsu Kaisen 0 numbers, maybe.?

Personally, I don't see any indication of that so far, but who knows what will happen. Everything will be clear next week.

I think the fact that it hasn't seen any concerning numbers so far, and has almost tripled its OW already (should do so tomorrow), is a good sign it's not going to collapse post-Obon. It's obviously being propelled by the holiday period, but even then, holiday periods don't always help frontloaded franchises (like Kamen Rider, the MCU, etc.) that largely (or even exclusively) appeal to the fanbase only, which One Piece can be included apart of in the past (they've only managed ~4.5/5 multipliers, despite also opening right before a major holiday period).

It's definitely brought in causal fans (those who may not buy every volume or watch every episode) and general audiences, otherwise it wouldn't have done this well. The music is the big factor in doing this, as we've seen what chart topping songs/soundtracks have done for many movies in the past. The majority of the market's biggest films at the box-office had #1 song(s) or soundtracks. On top of that, being the 25th anniversary release and including an old fan-favorite in the film (who is still relatively unknown despite 1,000+ chapters later), brought out most/all the fanbase, too, and OP has a very large fanbase.

Regarding the music/songs from the movie, check this out (from 12hrs ago):

Image

Ado's songs in the movie currently hold the Top 4 spots and 70% of the Top 10. That's huge after a week out from the movie's release. This means it has reached general audiences that the other films didn't tap into.

Woah this movie has become a phenomenon that no one expected. Did I expect it to hit 5b like the previous movies, of course, but never imagined that it would hit 10b and the possibility to even go beyond that. They really hit the jackpot with Ado and shanks combination. Also, it seems they went all out with marketing and it really worked out for them.

Thank you again corpse. your contribution is greatly appreciated.

I'm also interested in the possibility of the movie giving One Piece a boost in backlog sales, and maybe even current volume sales for the manga.

I doubt it will be a boost like KnY or JJK got since One Piece is a 100+ volume series, but even if a small % of moviegoers or casual fans stopped buying the manga during its peak (which iirc was a bit before Dressrosa) and return to buying manga volumes, that would be a ton of extra volume sales.

The best case scenario is this is the manga pulls another Strong World and gets a super increase in sales, but we will have to see.

Yes, Lugia. The marketing was also on point here. It had one of the biggest marketing promotions I can recall.

rija: The manga did see a decent bump last week. I think it had its best week in three years or so. The backlog (Vol. 1-102) sold 177,190 copies last week (08/01-07), which seems solid. That's not *huge*, but this series is 25 years old. And Kenji26 noted that the first six volumes were inside the Top 500 on the daily chart on August 12th. I know that making a Top 500 sounds unimpressive, but for volumes that were released in 1997 and 1998, it's definitely notable.

Vol. 103, also released last week, had the biggest first week (1,275,743 million copies sold) in the series since... I think Vol. 93 back in 2019. Digital sales aren't reported, but since they've grown in recent years, it may have matched/beat Vol. 93 overall.

I wouldn't expect a huge backlog boost, definitely not like it experienced between 2010-2012, because as mentioned this is a 25 year old series with over 100 volumes now. That's a major investment for someone new to jump into. But, the first six volumes appearing in the daily sales ranking does suggest at least some new fans have jumped in thanks to the new movie.

JustLurking, Rouk', etc., can speak more on the manga sales.

And, while I don't want to speak too early, I think I underestimated its Monday (today) by saying it might match last Tuesday. So far, it's tracking closely to Sunday (yesterday) and is basically on par with last Monday.

Another ¥500 million+ day looks pretty doable at the moment.

Latest dailies have had mid 20s op volumes in t500, latest daily went up to 10 for early vols. My guess would be this week would be 300, maybe 400k backlog.

Numbers for early vols are still low but thats pretty acceptable imho, OP has super high LTDs (2nd highest ever) so just getting back a good amount of people that fell off the wagon is more than good enough, doesn't really need to expand the audience too much.

There was a campaign that was going on coinciding with the release of the movie that you can read vol 1 to 92 for free on shonen jump app. I don't know if it's still going, but if it's still going it makes sense that we only see the newer volumes charting high

Almost ¥100m higher than I was estimating! Makes me wonder if it broke 1m admissions again. It should have with that number.

Also, I was only ¥8m off for last Mon-Fri. That might be the closest I've ever been estimating a week. I barely have to make any changes in the daily tracker which is always nice.

Looks like it'll break ¥7 billion today, then, because Monday is very strong and knowing last Monday's estimate is very accurate, then it's definitely above ¥500m. It's the only film that's down vs last Monday, but being this high (nearly higher than ths rest of the top 10 combined) and pulling off a sub-10% hold is pretty remarkable.

Very nice! The avg. ticket price also increased a bit. Should have considered this beginning on Thursday (Aug. 11th) since I noticed some locations give it more premium showings. When I add that ¥8m to the daily tracker for last Mon.-Fri. later, I'll add the bulk, or ¥6m of the ¥8m, to Thursday and Friday.

The bump in the second weekend lets it overtaken Frozen II for the third highest second weekend ever. And being over 1 million admissions, it became the fifth film to ever sell 1m+ admissions in its second weekend.

Going back to revise last week's estimates (Mon-Fri), and while I was almost exact in revenue (just 8m low), I was 86,000 admissions too low (average of 17,200 per day) with it up to 4.62m now. So, while its atp increased over the weekend (Sat/Sun), it was a bit lower over the weekdays. Not surprising, it is a holiday week and rural locations (usually slightly cheaper tickets, if only because they have few/no premium formats) tend to perform better over the weekdays.

So the next daily tracker update here in a bit will have the revised numbers. Very little change in revenue as mentioned for last Mon.-Fri., but they'll be a nice uptick in the admissions.

One Piece Film Red - Daily Tracker

Sat. (08/06): ¥1,232,095,230 ($9.1 million) / 869,407
Sun. (08/07): ¥1,022,141,800 ($7.6 million) / 710,145
Mon. (08/08): ¥591,000,000 ($4.4 million) / 430,000
Tues. (08/09): ¥466,000,000 ($3.5 million) / 340,000
Wed. (08/10): ¥525,000,000 ($3.9 million) / 415,000
Thur. (08/11): ¥593,000,000 ($4.4 million) / 430,000 *Holiday*
Fri. (08/12): ¥548,000,000 ($4.1 million) / 395,000
Sat. (08/13): ¥833,000,000 ($6.2 million) / 573,195
Sun. (08/14): ¥664,000,000 ($5.0 million) / 456,805
Mon. (08/15): ~¥570,000,000 ($4.3 million) / ~415,000

Cumulative Total (10-Days): ~¥7,044,000,000 ($52.5 million) / ~5,035,000

**********

With this incredibly impressive second Monday, many notable achievements came with it:

Since the weekend came in higher than estimated in revenue, the Monday puts it above ¥7 billion after just ten days. This is pretty easily the second fastest film to ever reach this milestone. Also, with its weekday admissions coming in higher than estimated, the Monday puts it above 5 million admissions after just ten days! This is also easily the second fastest film to sell 5 million admissions.

AND, not done yet, the Monday puts it above the previous highest grossing film in the franchise (Film Z), so Film Red became the highest-grossing film in the franchise after just ten days.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Obon Festival; One Piece - King of the
Numbers for the Obon Festival Daily Estimates have been adjusted to account for the available totals as of Sunday (all went up!). I'll adjust the Sat/Sun numbers even more so when the weekend actuals are released later. Kingdom II's total is still an estimate as of Sunday (said to have exceeded ¥4 billion on Sunday, which could be anything from ¥4.00-¥4.09b), while Tang remains a pure estimate.

This has been an extraordinarily consistent Obon Festival. Every day since last Thursday has been very close across the board. The holiday period doesn't really have an "end" date, but I do expect Tuesday to see a bit of a decline (nothing major, still certainly boosted) based on glancing at some reservations for the day. Wednesday will probably serve as the transition day between Obon/regular dailies, while Thursday will probably be the first day we see numbers come fully back to normal levels.

And congrats to Top Gun: Maverick for breaking ¥11 billion! Haven't talked about it much this week, but it continues to do extremely well. It saw a huge increase on Monday, likely thanks to the start of a new giveaway, and is likely to reach ¥12 billion.

Agree. Also saw this on Twitter (won't share the tweet since there are SPOILERS for anyone who hasn't been relatively caught up): https://twitter.com/WSJ_manga/status/15 ... 0568923136

Summary:

According to a bookstore clerk, customers are increasingly asking for backlog volumes, especially those from 96 on. And notes that Volumes 1-10 and 81-103 (33 volumes total) were on Shoseki's daily sales ranking on August 14th. So, the early volumes would be potential new fans buying into the series (or old fans replacing lost/damages ones?), while the latter volumes would be those who fell off the wagon, as you said, which makes sense since individual sales did start to decline around there (early 80s) or a little later.

Would love to see one of the early volumes, 1, especially, manage to crack the Top 50 so we can see the lifetime sales. But I question if stores even have a decent stock of the very early volumes from 22-25 years ago to get them that high on the sales chart. Did the early volumes (say, 1-10), ever hit the top 50 during the 2010-2012 boom?

Tuesday should still be a good deal above "normal", but not as strong as the past five days. Wednesday, I think, will also be above average, but we'll see the first sign of things coming down as the holiday periods winds up. And finally, I think this Thursday will be largely back to normal.

Obon Festival doesn't exactly have an "end", so just need to watch when films begin to drop off to know when it happens (it's usually around the 17th, but dates can vary).

But note, while the numbers will begin to come down in a couple days, we're still in summer vacation, so the dailies will be better than normal (just not at holiday levels) for a couple more weeks.

I did see that, though OP is generally hella overprinted so I'm sure they have plenty of volumes in warehouses for quick restocks. I wouldn't really expect big jumps or anything though since I don't see early OP vols super high on digital stores either, but we'll see I guess.

And as for the top 50, yeah early vols did chart a few times back then (OP 1 sold over a million between 2008 and 2012, iirc). Though obviously, those charting aren't helpful to know the LTDs - oricon only started tracking in 2008, so their number for OP1 before then was...well, 0. :funny: Basically, even if it miracolously charted again (as of now, it's nowhere near making oricon), you'd only get the total starting from 2008. Granted I wouldn't expect big differences between those years and now, after 2013 volume 1 never even made the top500 (barring one random daily in 2019) before now.

Volume 1 first charted in the top 50 in early december 2009, selling 15,785 units for a total of 184k since oricon first started tracking data. Volume 2-10 were in the top 100 that week. Then, a month later, volume 1-16 were found in the top 100.
Old OP volumes charted irregularly until late February 2011 where OP 1 sold 20,595 units for a total of 841k. Volume 2 also charted that week in the top 50. We have no top 100 for that period.
Earlier in mid January, volume 1-10, 15-16 and 18-19 charted in the top 50. All with a total of around 600k
