Demon Slayer was faster to reach ¥40Bn than Spirited Away to reach ¥30Bn and Titanic to reach ¥25Bn. Remarkable.

Indeed. There are all sorts of mind-boggling stats like that in which you can associate with the film.

Didn't realise Hobbit films were such a downer in Japan considering how big the LoTR films were and how big Fantastic Beasts are.

How come Titanic never reached 30 billion when it took only 44 days to go from 20 to 25 billion (Spirited Away took 43)? Seems like it had the potential to gross more. Were its legs cut short by a VHS release a la Frozen?

I was looking at ER, saw $ being 70 yen in 2012, so thought, well Hobbit did billion dollar just on strength on Japan then, only to realise them being utter flop. In fact even opening were incredible low.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/15-16); Charts Update
The Lord of the Rings was a popularly known property in the market before the films opened, whereas The Hobbit simply wasn't. Think of them as two different properties. (The Hobbit is generally seen as a children's book, too, but Jackson made it darker and the book wasn't content rich enough for three 3-hour films...) And it helped that the LOTR movies were hugely successful with critics to keep the interest high for the sequels, whereas The Hobbit films received a largely mixed reception that killed their chances of recovering after their poor debuts.
It's not the same as the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts situation for several reasons. The Fantastic Beasts films were spinoffs of a more modern and far more popular series (in terms of number of fans), so they were able to bring in a good number of HP fans. And the films also have Johnny Depp, which helps (or helped now I guess given WB let him go...). Depp is arguably the biggest Hollywood draw ever in the market, except for possibly Cruise. Not having him on board is going to take away a lot of interest. Expect FB3 to see a large decline as a result despite FB2 almost matching FB1.

Were its legs cut short by a VHS release a la Frozen? I'm of the opinion that Titanic began to burn out/stall out around the time it was approaching and hit ¥25 billion. It got there over summer vacation/around Obon Festival, so the few weeks beforehand and during the time it reached the mark would have been heavily boosted. It dropped off in the weekend rankings pretty quickly after summer since it had used up all its opportunities to bring in audiences, basically, and Fall is the weakest season of the year. It also got to ¥20 billion from ¥15 billion rather quickly, presumably from impressive numbers in the earlier weeks of that stretch from its Oscar-sweep. As for Spirited Away, it got to ¥20 billion in the early Fall, following record numbers from its first 2 months (until Demon Slayer), and went awhile after that with just its WOM to support it, so it just naturally took a bit of time to get from ¥20 billion to ¥25 billion given the Fall (September-November) is the weakest period of the year. And remember that Spirited Away wouldn't have gotten to ¥30 billion either if it didn't win the Oscar that prompted a largescale expansion (it was #18 the week before this expansion, then shot up to #4).

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/15-16); Charts Update
I'm going to be minority here to claim that 30 million admissions for Demon Slayer is possible, and could even call it "reasonable" to set it as a goal. DS is still haunting in top 10 chart, there's no hurry to take it off cinema after home release, and with worse pandemic situation in Japan there'll be less domestic film to compete. It might even be around (though not in top 10) when season 2 aired in October. The "final revised figure" is the one to looking for for this accomplishment.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/15-16); Charts Update
And when it reaches 30 million, I think it will do 31 million, so that can be the new goal. And when it does 31 million, 32 million is also possible. 33 million would be doable after 32 million. And maybe even 34 or 35 million once it reaches 33 million around Spring Break 2022. And if it does 35 million, hype will continue for a few more years to reach 40 million by the end of the decade.
Guys... it has only added about 70,000 admissions since May 5th. 30 million admissions is a totally useless and meaningless number to sell or aim for. It's not going to do another 1.05 MILLION admissions without some major event that brings out a lot of fans again (fans that are going to buy the movie in droves in a few weeks so they can watch it every day at home). (And even that's a very hard sell given the back-to-back giveaways and Dolby expansion back over Spring Break fell well, well short of that.) It's probably going to fall outside the Top 10 in the next couple weeks (it's going to be down to 8th this weekend), likely the weekend of June 4th.

I actually take an inspiration from Spirited Away when it disappear from Box Office since week 25 though the final figure increase the total box office 2 billion yen.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/15-16); Charts Update
Almost all of that was gained after it resurfaced in the Top 10 (4th) in week 32 after winning the Oscar thanks to a largescale expansion. It stayed in the Top 10 for another 4 weeks. It was in 18th place the week before winning the Oscar and was slowly on course to end its run. It wouldn't have gotten to ¥30 billion without that Oscar win and expansion response.
It remains to be seen, perhaps Demon Slayer will buck the trend of home video releases largely ending a film's theatrical run, but it's a very consistent precedent in the market--so much so that I'm planning to take an extended break shortly after the home video release. Frozen was doing bigger numbers than Demon Slayer ahead of its home video release, and the home video release severely halted its theatrical run despite the higher demand (at the time), and it exited theaters a few weeks later.
30 million admissions isn't impossible until it isn't. So I'm not saying it is. There's just no reason to try to get there, really, especially since it would need some major event(s) to get it there since just remaining in theaters for months to come wouldn't be enough to get it there considering it's going to do around 100,000 admissions for the month of May. Even assuming the home video release goes unnoticed (...) and has no impact on the box office, the film would have to remain flat at ~100,000 admissions every single month until next March to reach 30 million, and clearly that isn't realistic.
Not reaching 30 million admissions is the same as not reaching 31 million, 40 million, 100 million, 1 billion admissions at this point.

That's because of it returned to the charts on week 32 after the oscar win though. EDIT: ninja'd by corpse lol. But yeah I don't think 30 million is doable.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Hits ¥40 Billion
Going to mention Rurouni Kenshin for a moment. It's doing very, very well. It's been having excellent holds for the last couple weeks, and is going to easily exceed ¥3 billion and the original film's gross (soon) with no trouble whatsoever. I think a total of ¥3.5 billion (~$35 million) is quite doable at this point now too.
It might be benefitting from fans not being able to see it as early as they would have normally (due to theaters being closed in some prefectures, namely Tokyo and Osaka), which may be stretching out the businesses a lot more. And with the second part opening on June 4th, just 2 weeks away now, fans are probably trying to catch part one in time to see part two in theaters opening weekend or at soon as they can. Part one (currently playing) won't leave theaters in two weeks or anything, but people will need to see it before seeing part two in a couple weeks.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Hits ¥40 Billion
Part one of the Rurouni Kenshin finale film has become Warner Bros.'s highest grossing film in the market since 2019's Joker. It actually achieved this back on Wednesday or Thursday, I believe, by overtaking Tenet, but I forgot to mention it then.
Part two opens on June 4th.
