Note: The two weekends it fell outside the Top 10 have estimated weekend grosses.

One Piece Film Red is surging in the past month following Toei's announcement ahead of New Year that January 29th would be its final day in release, especially this past weekend (back to #3, achieving the second biggest 25th weekend ever) and over the current weekdays. Toei is really pushing it in its final weeks of release, so figured I'd post its weekend performance leading up to its final weekend coming up.

Will it rise back to #1 in its 26th and final weekend, ending its run how it began it? Assuming a final weekend increase with only a couple days for fans to get the last and final giveaway, will it be enough to get the film to ¥20 billion?

I don't know if it can increase again (maybe on sun). Unless theaters make an adjustment at the last moment it didn't seem like they were adding seats and last weekend basically capped capacity for what it was given. Over Howl looks good though and I thought it was dead until last weekend.

Let's see of interest dies down at the box office over the next week or two now, or if it's staying power has little/nothing to do with award season.

RRR wasn't the movie India submitted to the category, so it was never a candidate. I guess people didn't notice that (me included)

The film that they submitted was Last Film Show, and it did make the shortlist, but wasn't nominated in the end.

I think it's quite the opposite.

It was beginning to play out near the end of December and probably would have missed ¥19 billion, or just barely have gotten there. However, with Toei announcing the end date would be January 29th just ahead of the New Year holiday period, it provided a boost to the film. And with everything going on over its final two weeks (or ten days), it just had its biggest weekend since October and will, at a minimum, outgross Howl's Moving Castle to become the #8 film of all-time now.

And I'm interested in the seating for its final weekend. It came close to max capacity last weekend as theaters clearly weren't anticipating such a rush. If theaters give it enough seats this weekend, it could still hit ¥20 billion, assuming another big increase (more seating + final giveaway that will only be available for 2 or 3 days).

Ah, that explains it. I suppose it's just become a WOM success then, which is far more impressive than just being another film gaining interest due to award season.

For reasons that have been given it seems that Spider-Man OT, Avengers Endgame, and Joker will be the peak gross for Marvel/DC films in Japan since they all grossed over the ¥5 Billion blockbuster mark.

Though late, but Happy new Years and congratulations for the 5 million views. 6 million and 7 million and more soon  . Thank you Corpse for your continued efforts!

I found about this about a week ago but its surprising!

In South Korea Slam dunk is 5th in top 10 of all time highest grossing Japanese movies! with 1.6 million admissions. For reference Here's the top 10 list I took from a livedoor and a line article, admissions from movies.daum site. Might be outdated or inaccurate.

1.Your Name 3.79 million
2. Howl's Moving Castle 2.61 million
3.Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train 2.19 million
4.Spirited Away 2 million
5.Slam dunk Currently 1.679 million
6.Ponyo on the Cliff 1.52 million
7.Love Letter (1995 film) 1.2 million
8.Arrietty 1.08 million
9.Grudge 1.04 million
10.Even if This Love Disappears From the World Tonight 970K

Slam Dunk is really one of a kind to do that after all these decades even with little content to keep fans attached.

From the recent other hit movies
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 662K
One Piece Film Red at 197K

Suzume is releasing in March.

In Japan Slam dunk will also do a new giveaway starting February 1. 500K postcards. 10 Billion locked in!

From eigarankingnews

For One Piece
Quote:
[Published on the 176th day]
``ONE PIECE #FILMRED '' box office revenue estimate today…118 million yen Cumulative total…19.548 billion yen ( ※ estimated value)

“One day until the end of the movie! 』

128% compared to last week, recording even more mobilization than last week, exceeding the cumulative box office revenue of 19.5 billion yen! "Howl's Moving Castle (19.6 billion yen)" is in sight...! ?
Finally, we will have the finale tomorrow!
#FILMRED興収速報

For Suzume
Quote:
[Release day 79]
`` #すずめの戸締まり '' estimated box office today... 125 million yen Cumulative total... 13.025 billion yen ( ※ estimated value)

With the start of admission benefits, the number of mobilization increased by 158% compared to last week, and the cumulative box office revenue exceeded 13 billion yen!
It is expected to catch up with the box office of "Weathering with You" (14.23 billion yen), and there is a high possibility that it will overtake it in the final box office!
#すずめの興収速報

BTW Suzume will be the first anime film since Spirited Away to be shown at Berlinale.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: One Piece Film Red Nears Final Weekend
Interesting article about box office revenue from the side of the production company. Also shows distribution fee!

"Legend & Butterfly". How much can you earn for the total production cost of 2 billion yen?

Spoiler: show
However, it is said that the total production cost is 2 billion yen.

How much box office revenue can this huge production cost earn?

So, let's try to calculate the profit line.

The total production cost of 2 billion yen is the sum of the "production cost" required when producing a movie and the "P & A cost" advertising expenses required when advertising a movie. .

In my personal opinion, this work is assumed to have a relationship of "total production cost of 2 billion yen = production cost of 1.4 billion yen, P & A cost of 600 million yen".

First of all, the movie admission fee we pay to the movie theater when we watch a movie is "box office revenue", basically in the form of "50% each on the movie theater and the producer side".

However, if the movie is a big hit and the theater has a high seat occupancy rate, the percentage of "walk-away" that the producer side receives will be higher.

Specifically, in the case of this film, it is assumed to be about 45% for the movie theater and 55% for the producer's side.

Therefore, let us assume that the "percentage" received by the producer side is 55%.

Suppose that the box-office revenue of this film reaches 4.5 billion yen, exceeding that of "One Minute of a Samurai".

Then, the movie theaters would receive 2.025 billion yen (45% of 4.5 billion yen), and the producer side would receive 2.475 billion yen (55% of 4.5 billion yen).

However, the "distribution fee" (20% of the total amount) is deducted from the producer side's money for the work done by the distributor. In other words, the producer side will receive 1.98 billion yen, excluding the 495 million yen in "distribution fees" paid to the distribution company.

Therefore, if a film earns 4.5 billion yen at the box office, the total production cost of 2 billion yen will be almost even.

I noticed that there are ~40 theaters not being reported. They haven't been for most of the weekend, unfortunately. So... it's possible, probably likely, that the increases/declines are a lot better than we see across the board.

And in One Piece's case, its admissions from last weekend at the usual locations were only ~36% of its overall weekend admissions (Fri.-Sun.). It sold 155,000 admissions last weekend, but the usual locations only had it at 56,000 admissions (Fri.-Sun.). It increased over 100% MORE than what mimorin was saying. Taking this into account, and the 40 theaters not being counted this weekend, I think we're going to see a MUCH higher increase than what mimorin has. Probably off by over 100% again.

So those estimates from that Twitter user (unofficial), Chaplainfan, are going to be way off since they're just using what mimorin has to make those estimates.

For example... the Twitter user is only predicting ¥118 million for One Piece on Saturday. That would be a decrease from what it earned last Saturday. Friday barely made anything (~5% of the weekend gross last week), so just focusing on Sat/Sun, and splitting its last weekend gross (¥213.8 million) in half to ¥107 million, the Twitter user is still only predicting a 10% increase. But it made more on Sat vs Sun last weekend, so ¥118 million would be a decrease.

It's up 28% at mimorin, so it should, at a minimum, be at ~¥137 million on Saturday using that ¥107 million figure. However... we're missing 40 theaters (26% of its count at mimorin) this weekend vs last weekend. I can see it being as high as ¥175 million today, and depending on what happens tomorrow, a final weekend gross above ¥350 million (maybe near ¥400 million for the 3-day).

Seems like it got the seats after all but not enough of an increase for 20b regardless. Still a crazy final push by toei.

Oh I didn't really notice that, damn, mimorin's really bugged nowadays. Still seems like a bit of a stretch but maaaaaaybe then.

My Go to Twitter accounts for Japanese Box Office updates are EigaRankingNews, FranSpeech, And Luiz Fernando. I like eigarankingnews the most b/c it uses local currency while Fran and Luiz use mostly US currency. Of Course I trust Corpse of this site to the actually happenings at the Japan BO and him telling me about the theaters that are not counted yet puts more trust in him.

Have we gotten any clue about the presale of Kimetsu movie on the coming weekend yet?

We will in a couple days.

Going to be an interesting weekend for sure. In addition to the Demon Slayer special, there's a BTS movie that is apparently doing well in advance sales, and Slam Dunk is getting a large giveaway.

Sunday included the missing ~40+ theaters, so the Sunday percentage increases/drops might be relatively close to what we see for the weekend. But I'd take the Sunday percentages and raise them a bit higher.

That means...

The Legend & Butterfly takes #1, ending Slam Dunk's 8-week reign at #1.

Slam Dunk is #2 with either a flat gross vs last weekend, or maybe a slight increase.

One Piece should be #3. It was barely behind Suzume last weekend (¥214m vs ¥216m), and its increase at mimorin is higher than Suzume's, so it should be a good deal higher than Suzume nationwide. So it will end its insane run with a fifth consecutive weekend increase, the final one maybe being up around 100% or more again (IMO). It passed Howl's Moving Castle for sure to become the #8 all-time film, I believe it did so on Saturday. Question is how close to ¥20 billion did it get, or did it actually hit it?

Suzume is likely #4, and thanks to a giveaway (which I didn't know anything about), was up quite a bit too. Hard to say how much it increase due to Sat. missing theaters... but I'm guessing it's up... 40% or so?

Slam Dunk will rank high (~5th-7th perhaps) on the Biggest 9th Weekends Chart.
Suzume will rank 4th on the Biggest 12th Weekends Chart.
One Piece will set a new Biggest 26th Weekend Record.

Only admission rankings out so far, but One Piece beat Suzume for third place. I'm mentioning it early because this gives Toei the top 3 spots this weekend. I don't recall that ever happening before.

Speaking of Oscars actually several movies like Top Gun Maverick and Avatar 2 for example were nominated for best picture. I known there were several more that were nominated but just want to focus on these two. For Top Gun Maverick if it wins will a bigger expansion finally get it to surpass The Last Samurai as Tom Cruise highest grossing film in Japan, and for Avatar 2 despite the fact it will lose all premium screens to Demon Slayer on Feb 3, is it possible if it wins to go back on premium screens and make more money or will it most likely be finished?

For Demon Slayer since Mugen Train is the highest grossing film of all time in gross and admission, is there a possibility that this could gross at least ¥10 Billion or not and either way it will def decline not matter what from Mugen Train since sequels/follow-ups to ¥15 Billion or more grossers with one exception decline.

This is not a real film so it's best to not use Mugen Train as reference, it's 2 old episodes attached to the first one of season 3 which will air in 2 months. Will assess with expectations after presales go out in a few hours but even a 3~5b range would be pretty nutso for what this is

seeing as the stage greeting on sat sun is on the biggest screen on every theater and will likely be extremely strong, possibly near sold out nationwide, that probably means OW should get 150~200M from those alone. my interest is mainly on if this can crack 1b 3 days given the nature of the film.

So RRR had another good weekend at the Top 10 BO in Japan and despite having only an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song I hope it can still be leggy and maybe still reach ¥1 Billion, but if it does not at all it still the most successful Bollywood film in Japan.
