TOHO and movix instantly hit with a queue despite being a really early lift and stage greeting only. Huh.

It's going to be very interesting to see what it does opening weekend. In total, too, of course, but I imagine the opening is going to be very large. How large? We'll see. No precedent for it.

Will be a good way of testing its popularity these days since there hasn't really been anything to do so in some time.

No idea. Whatever presales end up looking like I would expect lower walkups than normal with nature of the film. 1b over the 3days might be a good target (?). Expecting a bit more now since it caused a queue this early on, but still don't really have a clue.

Yeah, hard to set a mark of success or not here. Like... I'd say anything even near/over ¥500 million for the opening would be amazing given what it is (as a reminder to people, it's a recap of the final couple episodes of Season 2 and the premiere, first episode, of Season 3 which debuts in April).

But... given it's Demon Slayer, I feel anything under ¥1 billion for the opening could be considered "weak."

It's a very unusual "film" to predict.

Since Hollywood (and Imported) films have largely been getting overshadowed and overwhelmed on the charts in recent years, here are ONLY the Top Grossing Imported Films since 2020:

Top Grossing Imported Films (2020-):

¥13.55 billion ($101.1 million) / 8.40 million - Top Gun: Maverick (Towa Pictures) *34 Weeks in Release*
________
¥6.32 billion ($46.7 million) / 4.24 million - Jurassic World: Dominion (Toho-Towa)
________
¥4.74 billion ($43.6 million) / 3.41 million - Parasite (Bitter's End)
¥4.60 billion ($36.3 million) / 3.15 million - Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (Warner Bros.)
¥4.44 billion ($32.8 million) / 3.67 million - Minions: The Rise of Gru (Toho-Towa)
¥4.25 billion ($37.7 million) / 2.82 million - Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony)
¥3.67 billion ($33.4 million) / 2.42 million - F9: The Fast Saga (Toho-Towa)
¥3.46 billion ($26.4 million) / 1.90 million - Avatar: The Way of Water (Disney) *5 Weeks in Release*
¥3.31 billion ($26.8 million) / 2.63 million - Sing 2 (Toho-Towa)
________
¥2.73 billion ($26.0 million) / 1.74 million - Tenet (Warner Bros.)
¥2.72 billion ($24.3 million) / 1.88 million - 007: No Time to Die (Toho-Towa)
¥2.16 billion ($16.6 million) / 1.41 million - Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (Disney)
________
¥1.91 billion ($16.8 million) / 1.33 million - Venom: Let There Be Carnage (Sony)
¥1.90 billion ($17.4 million) / 1.27 million - Godzilla vs. Kong (Toho)
¥1.40 billion ($12.2 million) / 0.92 million - The Matrix Resurrections (Warner Bros.)
¥1.35 billion ($12.3 million) / 1.03 million - Cats (Toho-Towa)
¥1.35 billion ($9.9 million) / 0.88 million - Thor: Love and Thunder (Disney)
¥1.32 billion ($9.2 million) / 0.90 million - Bullet Train (Sony)
¥1.25 billion ($11.7 million) / 0.85 million - Monster Hunter (Toho-Towa)
¥1.24 billion ($8.8 million) / 0.81 million - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Disney)
¥1.21 billion ($8.5 million) / 0.88 million - Lightyear (Disney)
¥1.20 billion ($10.6 million) / 0.79 million - Eternals (Disney)
¥1.19 billion ($9.9 million) / 0.76 million - The Batman (Warner Bros.)
¥1.00 billion ($8.8 million) / 0.84 million - The Boss Baby: Family Business (Toho-Towa, Gaga)

Takeaways:

>¥5 billion is the blockbuster milestone, and only 1 Imported film has got there (and went on to achieve uber-blockbuster status too). 1 Imported film getting to ¥5 billion over 3 year is unprecedented and dreadful. 11 Japanese films have reached the mark in the last 3 years in comparison.

>Warner Bros. needs a new Western franchise. They have a Japanese production company that is doing well with franchises like Rurouni Kenshin, and other individual films, but the Imported slate has really disappointed except for Fantastic Beasts.

>Toho-Towa (subsidiary of Toho) has handled the Universal and Paramount films very, very well. With maybe the exception of Boss Baby 2, every other film has matched or exceeded expectations. If Universal and Paramount hadn't sold their distribution rights, I really doubt most of their releases would have found success in recent years, especially the 2020/2021 releases.

>Disney... well, you can see above. Horrific numbers, and it's hard to see them recovering, at least not anytime soon. And the key difference between them and everyone else is streaming (Disney+). They're the only studio putting theatrical releases on streaming in Japan (at least not until they've played out of theaters), and audiences appear to have abandoned their films at the box-office because of it.

>Marvel/DC films (Spider-Man being the exception as always) = No appeal.

Very interesting thanks a lot for that. I'd like to put this on Wikipedia to at least update it. Without the subscription I don't know of the source would stick but can try.

I suppose the site wasn't specific enough to say it made $131 point something did it?

So the four movies combined for $350 million worldwide that's not too shabby. Again thanks for this.

Wow. Shockingly bad. Basically only one imported film was noteworthy. What a sad state of affairs. It used to be so much better.

Are there any coming in the next couple of years that you think could top, say, ¥7 billion? or is that just unreachable now for foreign films bar freak performers like Top Gun: Maverick?

This is one positive benefit of Sony having the film rights to Spidey. I’m glad partially that Disney does not have the film rights.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning (both parts) might be in contention thanks to TGM. The franchise has been reliable, averaging around ¥5 billion, with the second one doing over ¥9 billion. So, the franchise has gotten above that mark before, and with the goodwill from TGM, maybe one or both of this two-part sequel has a chance.

The Disney live-action reimaginings of The Little Mermaid and Snow White should be somewhat safe picks for ¥7 billion or much more, but I just don't know if they have the audience left to get them there. Same goes for any of their upcoming animation films, which includes Pixar (Pixar being more unlikely since they tend to average ¥4/5 billion), but they're just doing so awful we actually need a film to prove it's still possible before even predicting it, IMO.

Despicable Me 4... the third one got over ¥7 billion, and Minions 2, while declining from the first Minions, had a respectable retention. Illumination has managed to make a name for themselves in Japan, despite the market largely ignoring most Imported animated films except for Disney in the past (total 180 there now).

Speaking of Illumination... The Super Mario Bros. Movie! I've said it already that expectations are likely to be way too high just because of the idea of Nintendo + Mario = huge box office in Japan. Precedent shows that almost never works. However, it will have Toho (or Toho-Towa rather) behind it, it has a great release date, and if quality is there... it could be a rare case. We'll see.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny... The last one didn't even get to ¥6 billion, so I would be surprised if this one does. But, if it can keep the same admissions or go up a little bit, the popularity of premium formats could get it there. Doubtful, but it's at least possible.

I think that's it as far as picking films out with the best shot on paper. But it's possible something could be a breakout, either among these films above, or something unexpected.

One last darkhorse I'll mention is Oppenheimer. Nolan isn't a big name in Japan, but he does have a loyal, but small, fanbase. And WWII movies can sometimes breakout in Japan (think Letters from Iwo Jima, although that one isn't a great comparison). I don't know if this one will be maybe too sensitive or not, but worth mentioning it.

Umm what do you mean one? Top Gun Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion both hit over ¥5 billion unless you mistyped the data.

Yeah I mean, the weirdest thing is that since there isn't really a metric of comparison, won't really be able to say "exactly" how well it did regardless even after release (unless it does really big numbers of course, like, if it does go 1b+ 3 days for something like this I don't think there's much to argue about).

If it wasn't DS there would be no expectation on something like this to do anything, but it being DS the viewpoint is just different.

Box Office: SS Rajamouli's 'RRR' Is A Blockbuster In Japan
Quote:
Tokyo, January 19 - SS Rajamouli's period action drama RRR is continuing with its historic run and turns a blockbuster at the Japan box office.
Starring Jr. NTR and Ram Charan, "RRR" has completed 88 days in Japanese cinemas, grossing approx. ¥570 million or 36.20 crores so far. Over the last few days, the collection in the anime country has jumped, thanks to the film's win at Golden Globe. The Oscars nominations, which are scheduled to take place on January 24th, could give a further boost to the "RRR" collection in Japan. The movie is expected to score a couple of nominations at Oscars 2023.
Produced by DVV Entertainment, "RRR" has so far scored 369130 admissions in as many days. It is the biggest Indian film, both in terms of gross collection and footfalls in Japan. It will now hit in Dolby Cinema format across the country from January 20. "RRR" will finish its final run somewhere between ¥600 million to ¥700 million, a record which will be tough to break for the upcoming films. Worldwide, the epic blockbuster has grossed around 1150 crores, 4th biggest Indian movie ever.

Imax to Expand in Japan With 7 New Locations

It pretty cool IMAX is gonna have those new location coming, but in the article and we known it would happen it mentions that Demon Slayer compilation film will have an IMAX release and it pretty much confirms that Avatar 2 as Corpse mentioned if it loses such screens will likely collapse.

Quote:
Upcoming Japanese titles releasing in Imax includes next month’s much anticipated Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — To the Swordsmith Village

Toei Animation might possibly have two films in the top two weekends since One Piece Film Red is having a big increase but will be number 2 behind Slam Dunk. I have to say Holy Moley that is awesome!

One Piece Film Red's Saturday presales were 84.9% of all its available tickets... And near noon, it has sold 99.5% of all its available tickets today.

It doesn't have the available seating, I don't think, to break Demon Slayer's 25th weekend record, but it's going to easily claim the second biggest 25th weekend. And with the final giveaway next weekend on its final weekend in release, it might be even bigger and take #1 at the box office in its 26th weekend and possibly break the 26th weekend record. What a way to end its insane run if that happens, right?

Also, thanks for pointing out Bohemian Rhapsody was updated, Kanroji. I'll update it next week.

I have to salute Toei in making an effort to make sure that One Piece Film Red goes out with a bang.

Oh, I just remember one thing. I always assume that Disney (Japan) want to distribute its own movies, but could it be that it's actually Toho that refuse to distribute Disney's films? Does anyone has news source?

P.S. the movie RRR is also apparently in the top ten now again at around #9.

Umm what do you mean one? Top Gun Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion both hit over ¥5 billion unless you mistyped the data.

Two getting over that 5 billion mark is STILL horrible but it's still more than one...

I would honestly be shocked if Oppenheimer breaks out in Japan. Just can't imagine Japanese people would want to subject themselves to relive such a dark moment in their history (even if in and of itself it probably isn't the focus of the film).

The admission benefits continue to be very popular, and some theaters have already finished distributing them!
However, since the number of benefits is 200,000 for about 100,000 people mobilized, there may be room for distribution depending on the location...?

"THE FIRST SLAM DUNK" topped the charts for the 8th straight week, with cumulative box office revenue approaching 9 billion yen!
This week's performance is more than 90% higher than last week's, so it's almost certain that the final amount will exceed 10 billion yen!
"ONE PIECE FILM RED" has just become the first independently-distributed work by Toei to exceed 10 billion yen, and yet another big record is born! ?
