It should be at least higher than the current Evangelion movie 8.5B ?

Nah
Evangelion is literally a cult in Japan. It had massive following unlike JJK. JJK probably won't reach that high of a grossing when even Detective Conan can't.
But nothing is impossible. If the manga continues to grow, more and more people might check the movie as it's the prequel to JJK.
But who knows. We just need to wait and see.

Conan can. It has in the past and would have done so again without restrictions. I think JJK will definitely hit 5 billion.

Jujutsu Kaisen is much bigger than My Hero Academia in Japan if we compare manga sales. JJK only has half as many volumes right now, yet it has 13 million more copies in print (50 million vs. 37 million). The recent volumes are selling 3/4x more in their first week than MHA ever did in its peak.

Since the movie is adapting volume 0, which is very popular and has even outsold most of the volumes in the main series, it's going to bring in nearly all of the fans, especially if we assume they'll be a giveaway exclusive to go along with it.

¥5 billion is a fair target, in my opinion. Only some One Piece films and the Demon Slayer movie have broke this milestone among all animated WSJ films. How close to, or potentially over, ¥10 billion will depend on the appeal it has outside the fanbase, which is pretty unknown at this stage I believe since It's still a younger series that's still growing a bit. But it's a lot more violent than most WSJ series (the movie will definitely be R15+), so it probably won't manage to reach a significant casual (both younger and older) audience.

The next arc (following this upcoming prequel arc that the movie is adapting) is easily the most brutal and violent arc I've read among WSJ titles in a very long time. It's absolutely amazing and one of the best arcs in all of WSJ/Shonen, and season 2 adapting it will be insane, but it's very unrelenting in the brutal/violent category, especially for a series being published in WSJ.

Didn't really have time for the Weekend Estimates today, but this was a very solid and exciting weekend.

There's a 3-way battle for #1 between a new Gundam film (easily going to become the biggest film in the series), Rurouni Kenshin: The Final - The Beginning's second weekend, and, surprise Evangelion's thirteenth weekend which rose perhaps around 900% (yes, nine-hundred) due to its farewell/sendoff event.

Actuals and charts will be posted tomorrow.

Are you interested in covering the 1st or 2nd week of the Bluray/DVD sales of Mugen Train, @Corpse? Like a farewell to your 8-hardworking months during the runtime of the movie.

I'll be watching how it sells, definitely. Barring some crazy unknown phenomenon in the next few years, Demon Slayer is quite honestly the last movie that could potentially challenge/break some home video sales records in the market.

Very close battle for #1 as I mentioned above this weekend. The top 3 films were only separated by 4,296 admissions, and... Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time came out on top by rising back inside the top 10 to claim the #1 spot in its fourteenth weekend of release, experiencing a 1,458% increase due to its franchise farewell/sendoff giveaway event.

Evangelion sold 169,296 admissions, second place was Rurouni Kensin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning with 167,000 admissions, and debuting in third was the new Gundam film selling 165,000 admissions. Full actuals will be posted later this evening.

It's rare for sequels to rank high (or at all) on the biggest weekend charts after week 12 or so, and Evangelion is the only sequel on the Biggest 14th Weekend list here. Very impressive.

Funny stat (and because I like bashing Disney's disinterested attitude in theatrical releases right now):

Evangelion's 14th weekend is 95.4% of the combined opening weekends of Disney's entire 2020 and 2021 slate of theatrical releases in Japan so far.

Not quite, but it's going way down to 102 locations starting this upcoming Friday (72% drop in theaters). It'll gradually play out of theaters from there, likely exiting all but a handful in a couple weeks.

I'm about to start the Weekend Actuals, but a quick correction so I won't need to explain it again later: I said Evangelion returned to #1, which is true in admissions (which I posted above), but due to an incredibly high average ticket price (over ¥2,000!), the new Gundam film opened at #1 in revenue by a comfortable margin.

Looking at the films at the top six right now, you'd think this was the 1990s! Five of the top 6 films right now (Gundam, Evangelion, Detecitve Conan, and Rurouni Kenshin x2) are 80s/90s properties.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway debuts atop the box-office in a big way, selling 165,000 admissions over the weekend frame on just 215 screens, and 259,074 admissions since Friday. That gave it an average ticket price of ¥2,004 ($18.26) over the weekend and ¥2,022 ($18.42) after its first three-days. That's almost 50% higher than the national average, and about 25% higher than a typical premium format release. Also, this is the biggest opening weekend ever for a Gundam film, and it's going to become the highest grossing film in the series in just a few days from now. Pretty incredible start.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time experienced a truly massive increase to rise back into the top 10, and it even ranked #1 in admissions over the weekend by selling 169,296 admissions. Why? Because of a major giveaway event marketed as the farewell/good-bye for both the film and Evangelion series. And Evangelion fans came out, and continue to do so this week (as of Monday), as they always do. The fans for this series are perhaps the most loyal and diehard of any domestic or foreign franchise in history. It'll be leaving theaters over the next few weeks (beginning with a 72% drop this upcoming weekend), but it's making its presence felt this week in true farewell fashion.

Character enjoyed a solid debut in fourth place, selling 133,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 319 screens, and 181,255 admissions since Friday. This should be good enough to get it to the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone, a respectable figure for a June release.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning rounds out the Top 3, seeing a fair hold by selling an additional 167,000 admissions over the weekend. I was expecting a better hold here, but Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final is still holding very well (seems possible for it to actually reach ¥4 billion now), meaning that a decent number of fans still haven't caught in in theaters yet, therefore the second part is only attracting the fans that have seen part one still. I'm expecting part one to eventually see a fairly sudden decline as fans come out to see it before seeing part two, and when/if that happens, part two will probably begin to show its legs.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet held well in its ninth-weekend of release, and surpassed Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter to become the third highest grossing film in the long-running franchise. It's also less than 50,000 admissions away from reaching 5 million admissions now, too. It should continue to see good/great holds for awhile.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is nearing its end, falling outside the Top 25 films now, so its weekend grosses won't be reported any longer. However, its total continues to be reported, thankfully, and it's up to ¥40,127,186,250 ($383.5 million) and 29,040,541 admissions after thirty-five weeks of release. Its losing more theaters this upcoming Friday, so this could be the last update it receives. The home video release is on TUESDAY! Crazy to think it's 2 days, or 1 day technically, away.

I also want to add that screenings starting on Saturday ran a Evangelion 3.0+1.01 version with some updated scenes and improved animation, so fans would want to see the updated version since usually additional changes are made for the home video release (likely a version 3.33+1.11). It's the rare chance they could see that version. It also got IMAX and Dolby Cinema screenings last weekend as well.

Also, this is the biggest opening weekend ever for a Gundam film, and it's going to become the highest grossing film in the series in just a few days from now

I think that the last of the compilation movies of the original 1979 series grossed ¥2.5 billion back in 1982

Don't know if I calculating something wrong here but if Evangelion had higher ticket price and more admissions then shouldn't it have more revenue as well? Or when you say admissions its per theater average?

I'll look it up! That'd certainly be very, very impressive.

Welcome to the forum, by the way.

I meant to say that due to the higher avg. ticket price for Gundam, that it was able to debut at #1 in revenue despite losing to Evangelion in admissions.

I highly doubt it plays nearly that long. It'll probably fall out of the top 10 this upcoming weekend, and begin to shred what theaters and screens it has soon after. It might limp to ¥500 million, but I'd still predict it finishes below that.

It probably would have done around ¥1.5 billion (somewhat common territory for the more vanilla, non-fantasy Disney live-action films) if it wasn't on Disney+ and theaters (especially Toho Cinemas) didn't boycott it.

I mistook high average for Evangelion assuming the stage greetings are most expensive. Thanks for clarification as always.
