I was talking about first one of course. I feel due to Olympics the government does not want to make any headlines about restrictions and pandemic. Once its over there will be some further restrictions.

Gotcha. I said that under the assumption that restrictions wouldn't get harsher in the near future, but seeing as how covid cases are rising hard in Japan I wouldn't discount that happening, sooooo I guess it's more of a wait and see situation.

I'm (somewhat) back. :)

I'll be visiting again starting this weekend (or today, I suppose), but won't be doing any updates for another week, possibly two. I will also share that I am, almost certainly, not going to be as active in general, but certainty so in terms of updates and such for the thread. I'll still do them, but they'll be scaled back a good deal and basically consist of the basic updates.

Currently thinking of only Weekend Forecasts (Fridays), Weekend Actuals (Mondays/Tuesdays), and the Yearly Opening Weekends/Totals (Mondays/Tuesdays). All other sorts of lists and/or updates will be spaced out into monthly or seasonal updates.

Yay! Welcome back. Hope you had a nice break. As for the updates I agree we were going too much before but I'm sure myself and other posters will eventually ask for some more details/updates here and there so better scale down your regular throughput.

Mamoru Hosoda's Box-Office History:

OPENINGS:
¥679.9 million ($6.2 million) / 459,000 - Belle (2021)
¥667.0 million ($5.5 million) / 494,170 - The Boy and the Beast (2015)
¥400.1 million ($3.6 million) / 295,828 - Mirai of the Future (2018)

N/A - Digimon the Movie (2000)

TOTALS:
¥5.85 billion ($47.7 million) / 4.58 million - The Boy and the Beast (2015)
¥5.60 billion ($51.1 million) / 4.04 million - Belle (2021) *Estimate [7 Weeks in Release]*

¥2.88 billion ($26.1 million) / 2.28 million - Mirai of the Future (2018)

¥1.20 billion ($11.1 million) / 1.00 million - One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island (2005)
¥260 million ($2.2 million) / 200,000 - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) *limited release*

Belle will surpass The Boy and the Beast next week, probably on Saturday. Admissions will take quite a while longer, likely around the eventual end of its run in the coming months.

And just in case anyone was unaware, since we've had several new members over the past year, Mamoru Hosoda has won the Best Animation Academy Prize with all his films since 2006's The Girl Who Leapt Though Time (so 5 total now), 2006 being the first year the category was introduced in the Japan Academy Prizes.

In 2011, he founded his own animation studio, Studio Chizu, and every film since Wolf Children has been produced by them and distributed by Toho.

And interesting fact, Hosoda was originally going to direct Howl's Moving Castle for Studio Ghibli, but due to "creative differences", they parted ways and Hayao Miyazaki took over the project. Talk about a historic moment in box office history.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Updates on Hiatus until ~August
Updates will begin again next week.

They'll be scaled back and primarily focus on weekend figures and the yearly charts. I'll do occasional "extra" updates and lists a few times a month, such as adding and updating a franchise film in release to its respective chart or updating an all time chart if a film makes an impact on them.

What I do not foresee returning are any kinds of daily updates. Maybe in the long-term, but definitely not any time this year. I'm also going to refrain from answering too many requests. Don't feel bad asking a question or requesting a specific chart, but I'll be a lot less likely to respond to all of them for awhile, especially if it involves something I don't already know or have saved and would require research to answer.

This is the self-compromise I've come up with for the short-term at any rate. And I want to thank mark66 and others for posting various weekend charts and other data Here over the past six weeks or so to keep this thread alive. Really appreciate it.

I will check on this tomorrow since its run has now effectively ended. But last I looked, its revenue total from the weekend of its final week run in July was its last reported total (mark66 posted that weekend I believe). As for admissions, I didn't see any updates from that weekend on any of the regular sites, but I'll look around a bit tomorrow and post what I find.

Four day holiday weekend to begin Obon Festival, so very much boosted, but very impressive figures regardless. I wouldn't have expected either film to come in that high.

That's definetly the biggest 4-day for the Fast franchise since Fast 7, but it might have topped that one. too. I'll check on this later on, but if its 4-day topped Fast 7, it's the biggest start in the entire franchise.

And My Hero Academia 3 easily outopened its predecessors. Its 4-day there is already about 55% of the total gross of its individual predecessors. It's going to easily outgross them both, and might do so after this upcoming weekend.

Pretty crazy debuts in the face of Japan's record COVID numbers right now.

What was the two-day opening number for Fast 9? It will be interesting to see how high this one will finish given the lackluster WOM in other markets.

@LPLC: Demon Slayer's last reported total was ¥40,326,120,350 ($385.2 million) three weeks ago after its final week expansion and run. Its admissions weren't updated from the previous last reported figure though, and still stands at 29.04 million. But using some rough math, we should be able to add around 130,000 admissions or so to that since it increased by ~196 million, so the final admission figure should be around 29.17 million.

It's still in 2 theaters (one in Osaka, one in Kanagawa), so we'll likely just have to wait until it's done playing in them before Toho/Aniplex releases the final number. Don't expect it to jump much more than those numbers above though.

Yeah. The Top 2021 (for example) Opening Weekend/Totals will be updated each week shortly after the Weekend Actuals are posted like before. These charts will still be given the weekly treatment.

mark66 shared its 2-day opening weekend above. The 2-day is "only" the third biggest in the series, behind The Fate of the Furious (¥633.4 million / 422,058) and Furious 7 (¥548.3 million / 385,428), but its 4-day is the highest. Don't have the exact 4-day figures for its predecessors, but neither Fast 7 or 8 got to ¥1 billion before day 4.

I'll have a Fast and Furious Box Office History chart posted soon-ish, maybe in the next few days since a new film just opened in it. I'll bump it up the priority list.

(And we love Tim Drake, yes.)

Godzilla Box-Office History:
# Of Films: 36 / Years Active: 1954-Present

Admissions:
12.55 million - Godzilla vs. King Kong (1962)
9.61 million - Godzilla (1954)
8.34 million - Godzilla Raids Again (1955)
7.20 million - Godzilla vs. Mothra (1964)
5.69 million - Shin Godzilla (2016)
5.41 million - Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
5.13 million - Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)
4.21 million - Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster (1966)
4.20 million - Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992)
4.00 million - Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)
3.90 million - Godzilla (1998) *Hollywood*
3.80 million - Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)
3.40 million - Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla (1994)
3.20 million - The Return of Godzilla (1984)
2.70 million - Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991)
2.50 million - Destroy All Monsters (1968)
2.48 million - Son of Godzilla (1967)
2.40 million - Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)
2.23 million - Godzilla (2014) *Hollywood*
2.00 million - Godzlla vs. Biollante (1989)
2.00 million - Godzilla 2000 (1999)
1.95 million - Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) *Hollywood*
1.78 million - Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972)
1.74 million - Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971)
1.70 million - Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla III (2002)
1.48 million - All Monsters Attack (1969)
1.35 million - Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
1.33 million - Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)
1.20 million - Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S (2003)
1.20 million - Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) [6 Weeks in Release] *Hollywood*
1.00 million - Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)
0.98 million - Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973)
0.97 million - Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)

Here is where Godzilla vs. Kong ranks after its 6th week in release. Not very good, clearly. I wasn't expecting it to do any better than the 2014 or 2019 Godzilla films, but this is still a noticeable decline and didn't come close. Kong himself hasn't been very popular at the box office in the market (much less than Godzilla), so adding him in likely had no positive impact whatsoever. It may have even been a deterrent for some.

And it's not due to the state of the market considering we've seen MANY franchise films come close to, match, or exceed their predecessors all year long. And HBO Max doesn't exist in Japan, so can't blame it either.

Anyway, I haven't tracked its run, but seeing how low its 6th weekend was, it's likely to wrap up its run shortly in a couple weeks and will likely finish at/or below 1.25 million admissions.

I don't have an Opening Weekend chart for this franchise since only a handful of films have opening weekend data available since it's so old, but Godzilla vs. Kong opened 20-30% below the last three films (King of the Monsters, Shin Godzilla, and Godzilla). So its opening weekend wasn't that bad, but it's been holding much worse.

And a very interesting stat: 2016's Shin Godzilla will end up outperforming the combined totals of all 3 recent Hollywood films (...).

Thanks Corpse,
Honestly, I had tracked GvK to lower than 1.20 million in its 6th week, so I'm surprised it has reached Tokyo SOS.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Updates on Hiatus until ~August
I have hundreds of JPY openings memorized (or approximate figures), but all those USD figures look good to me (especially if you used any numbers found in this thread).

Technically, Godzilla vs. King was still below 1.2 million admissions as of Monday with 1,199,402, so I just rounded up there. At least it's gotten there I suppose, but it really should have been good for 1.5 million+ at least. It's one of Warner Bros.'s few misfires this year in Japan so far.

**Opening Weekend impacted by theater closures in Tokyo, Osaka, and 6 other prefectures.

TOTALS:
¥5.22 billion ($50.0 million) / 4.04 million - Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (2014)
¥4.35 billion ($40.6 million) / 3.38 million - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (2014)
¥4.32 billion ($39.6 million) / 3.07 million - Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final (2021)*
¥3.01 billion ($38.3 million) / 2.42 million - Rurouni Kenshin (2012)
¥2.41 billion ($22.0 million) / 1.70 million - Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning (2021)*

*Run impacted theater closures in Tokyo, Osaka, and 6 other prefectures.

The two final Rurouni Kenshin films weren't updated this past weekend, so I'm going to assume the above totals are their preliminary final totals until Warner Bros. announces otherwise down the road.

Part 1 (The Final) nearly matched The Legend Ends despite being impacted heavily by not playing in Tokyo, Osaka, and others, during Golden Week back in April/May. So very impressive result there.

Part 2 (The Beginning) dropped off quite a bit and finished below the first film in the saga, its run a bit more impacted by the aforementioned closures when it opened in June, and then when they reopened, bigger films were already beginning to release, so it suffered from them as well. So not as good of an individual result, clearly, but combined, the two-part finale earned ~¥6.73 billion ($61.6 million) on 4.77 million admissions. Warner Bros. is surely pleased.
