So, to begin, most should know by now that a state of emergency was issued in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo on Sunday, this one being the most strict yet resulting in theaters closing (first time any have close since last June) until May 11th. So the numbers are going to be lower than normal for a few weeks, but the numbers so far haven't been as poor as expected. The impact will vary a bit by film (the wider a release with broader appeal will perform better than a small release with limited appeal), but so far, we'll take what's been coming in so far.

>Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet repeated atop the box office, selling an additional 549,000 admissions in its sophomore frame, bringing its 10-day admissions up to 2,745,074, and its total almost hit ¥4 billion. Its second weekend is just 13% lower than its predecessors with the hit it took on Sunday, and its two-week total is 10% higher. It's likely to lose its lead over Golden Week due to the SOEs, but this is a nice lead that will cushion the impact of the next couple weeks.

It's going to be difficult for it to outgross its predecessor, thus becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise (for the ninth-consecutive release), but don't rule it out yet until we see the numbers after a few weeks. Its stage greetings that were cancelled on Sunday will be rescheduled at some point, and if it (and theaters) need a boost, Toho could certainly add a giveaway event for it to recuperate some of the revenue loss these next couple weeks.

>Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final, the fourth film in the series and Part 1 of the finale, came in second place, selling 362,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 480 screens, and 515,708 admissions over its first three-days in release. The film gave Warner Bros. their biggest opening weekend in revenue since Joker back in October 2019, and biggest opening weekend in admissions since Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald way back in November 2018!

This opening is 32% higher than the original film, and 11% lower than the second film (and it would have opened a decent bit higher than it if not for the SOEs on Sunday). It, too, will lose some revenue over Golden Week due to the SOEs, but this start will help get it a good total (and Warner Bros. could also do some sort of event after May 11th for it too). I'd expect around ¥3 billion, but predicting this one right now is difficult.

>Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time exceeded the ¥8 billion milestone on Sunday, and brought its admissions up to 5,233,987 after 49-days in release. This should be one of the harder hit films over the next few weeks due to the SOE in Tokyo in particular. However, it was starting to wind down, and if anything its chances of reaching ¥9 billion (which were 50/50) are probably gone. There was no reason to really get to that milestone though (don't really see Toho trying to make two of their releases the #1 film of 2021 over the other), and it should still get to ¥8.5 billion ($77/78 million) without much trouble.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train enjoyed the best hold in the Top 10, and it probably would have come in sub-15/20% if not for Sunday's SOEs. Still, this is great. Its admissions are up to 28,802,456! It's likely going to take most of its run before its home video release on June 22nd to reach ¥40 billion now with the lower numbers it'll generate over Golden Week due to the SOEs, but it's still pretty much a near-certainty. Toho/Aniplex won't let it finish ¥50 million or something short of the mark, and it's already picking up some 4DX screens again beginning April 29th to further help it get there.

Oh, and if it held off BanG Dream! Episode of Roselia - Part I (which I had to estimate--all its theaters were accounted for at the usual locations since it's a near-limited release), it managed to score an unexpected extra weekend in the Top 5. And since it's likely going to have excellent holds from this point forward in its run, especially as theaters keep it going to reach ¥40 billion (such as giving it back some 4DX screens next week), it could managed to squeak out one or two more weeks in the Top 5 (next weekend is almost certain). And as for the Top 10, it's clearly aiming for well over 30 weeks there now (maybe up to 35+).

>And finally, Loved Like a Flower Bouquet refuses to leave the Top 10 and earns a 13th-consecutive week there now.

Shueisha, Aniplex, and Ufotable are swimming in cash now. Even though theaters received half of the earning, the trio still put in their pockets at least $223 million until this point. ROI is 3085%

Poor Gotouge, who only received ¥2 million

I think Ufotable deserves to have the money too especially the amount of explosion the anime contributed to the manga. After all, Gotouge gets more royalty in print than in the anime. But, I do wish, Gotouge gets more than just a small percentage.

But Gotouge is also swimming in money because of the 150 million copies of the manga

AND because of KnY, her next work would be anticipated greatly and her popularity will skyrocket from here on out.

In Japan? No way. Piracy is almost nonexistent both due to the culture and the severe anti-piracy laws.

But if that random person out there is willing to risk up to 10-years in prison to just watch something that'll be on home video in 8 weeks, then maybe they can set an example of what not to do for future dummies. .

Though being purchased through Sony wouldn't be anyone but Sony's problem. Hard to say how Aniplex (since Sony owns them) will react, and ufotable seems too "small" to deal with a giant like Sony, but Toho and Shueisha won't take kindly to this if it does explode.

But I think this is mostly being blown out of proportion. Actually returning to the theaters is a major selling point for it outside of Japan now that their markets are opening up. Need to wait and see if the numbers in the Americas slow, since it's more or less close to wrapping up everywhere else anyway, but I'd be surprised by a noticeable drop-off.

After the $20M OW in the US and very good WOM from the audience, I thought they it would hold quite well on the following weekend, and can finish above $40M, but now? What do you think about those chance?

Expected way worse from sunday/mon holds. Not too bad. Sadly golden week business is going to be hurt but it is what it is.

Conan was probably going to match its predecessor's weekend if it wasn't for the state of emergency, though I wonder if that would've been good enough in normal conditions considering that one received expansions throughout its run while this is playing "full steam" from the start. Kenshin wasn't too bad, either.

It's going to be naturally frontloaded in the U.S. either way, so $40-45 million is thr likely range regardless. I'm sure there will be some who decide to download it off the internet, but again, getting out and returning to theaters after so long is a selling point that I don't expect to be undermined by this very much.

I'll take this opportunity to say that the closer we get to Golden Week (starting on Thursday), the weaker the numbers will become beforehand. Numbers tend to slow before a holiday period anyway, but without Tokyo and Osaka, it'll be way more impactful.

But like you said, Sunday and Monday, while lower than normal of course, weren't too bad, and even arguably decent/good considering how much Tokyo and Osaka contribute to the box office. I'm pretty confident Golden Week will be decent.

If the past restrictions have taught us anything is that movies get good-to-great holds during them. I do not think Golden Week will be as big as previous years but it should still pull in decent numbers because its holidays outside of Tokyo and Osaka as well ;)

Demon Slayer – Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train has now notched an
estimated $457M worldwide.
Based on our estimates, and those of our sources, Demon Slayer has surpassed
China’s The Eight Hundred to become the No. 1 movie of 2020 worldwide, when
including its 2021 takings.

Congratulations!
For the first time in forever for a Japanese movie to achieve this.

Couldn't resist. (Sorry, labas) Updated the title of the International thread to reflect the new achievement!

I'll update the Daily Trackers for Demon Slayer, Detective Conan, and Rurouni Kenshin later today. Doing three films now is a little more time-consuming since I have to go back and readjust all the individual days of the past week for each of them. Not a big deal, it just takes a little time to get as accurate as possible for the weekdays.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Biggest Twenty Eighth Weekends
Biggest Twenty-Eighth Weekends (1998-):

¥49,811,300 ($437,000), -18%, ¥24,568,691,400 ($232.6 million), Your Name. (2016)
¥25,934,300 ($240,000), -29%, ¥39,779,619,100 ($380.2 million), Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)

And that's all again. As with last week (Week 27), Spirited Away is outside the Top 10 now and no other films come close to possibly appearing on the charts anymore from either already being out of release, or only in a few theaters where their numbers a miniscule and non-trackable (sub-¥5 million for sure).

And just like with last week (Week 27), Demon Slayer's ranking in the Top 10 (5th) is the highest known ranking at this point of release. Your Name. was 8th in its 28th weekend. It's likely that Titanic's 28th weekend ranking is either tied with Demon Slayer or higher than it, since it ranked somewhere between 2nd-5th, but the data isn't there to know with certainty.

Also, Demon Slayer will tie Your Name. for second most-consecutive weeks ever in the Top 10 with 29 weeks next week. Your Name.'s last weekend in the top 10 was week 29. And Demon Slayer's certain to have a 30th week in the Top 10 (and more), so it'll become only the second film in recorded history to achieve 30+ consecutive weeks in the Top 10 after Titanic.

The consistency of this film is amazing albeit there were no Hollywood films to take away its screens specially towards the end of its run.

Loved like a Flower Banquet is having a nice run at the bottom of the Top 10 charts

Also I wonder if DS can manage 3 more weeks in Top 5. Looks difficult but we can only hope.
