Post Re: Japan Box Office: Fastest to 10 Billion
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is about to clear the uber-blockbuster milestone of ¥10 billion in a a couple days, either Wednesday (Day 41) or Thursday (Day 42), with Thursday being most likely.

It will become the 39th overall film, 15th animated film, and 13th Japanese film in history to reach this milestone.

And here is the list of Fastest Films to reach the milestone.

Fastest Films to ¥10 billion (Uber-Blockbuster Status):

10 - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)
25 - Spirited Away (2001)
28 - Your Name. (2016)
28 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
30 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
31 - Ponyo (2008)
33 - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
34 - Weathering With You (2019)
35 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
37 - Frozen (2014)
37 - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
40 - Frozen II (2019)
41 - Aladdin (2019)
41/42 - Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2021) *Projection*
42 - Beauty and the Beast (2017)
43 - Princess Mononoke (1997)
44 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban (2004)
45 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
47 - Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
50 - Avatar (2009)
52 - Toy Story 3 (2010)
52 - Finding Nemo (2003)
52 - The Last Samurai (2003)
53 - The Wind Rises (2013)
53 - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
53 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
57 - The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
74 - Toy Story 4 (2019)
74 - Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
78 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004)
107 - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
132 - Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (2021)

Note: Titanic is an obvious omission from this list, but all data indicates it hit ¥10 billion after 100 days, so it's near the bottom of the list (probably around Pirates 2).

It's also receiving its third giveaway promotion this upcoming weekend, but maybe more importantly, it's expanding to all 4DX/MX4D and Dolby Cinema locations as well starting on Saturday. It has a good bit left in the tank (it's still #1 at the BO after all).

I'm thinking ¥4.1/4.2 billion (~$37/38 million) / ~2.7-2.8 million admissions.

-~35% increase over Far From Home.
-Second highest MCU film behind just Endgame.
-Sixth highest grossing Marvel/DC film ever (behind OT Spider-Man's, Endgame, and Joker).

Very good performance. I think there was room for more, probably had ¥5 billion potential, it just couldn't quite overcome the current market for Hollywood/Imported releases to get it up there. As we've documented for nearly 2 years now, and as I've explained a couple times recently, Hollywood is having a very hard time in the market.

No Way Home wasn't subject to any streaming penalties/boycotts, but it was hampered (as pretty much every Hollywood film these days) by how Japan's population is rapidly aging and declining.

None of the older audiences (the majority of the pop. now) know who Tom Holland or Zendaya are, nor any of the current younger big Hollywood stars, and the younger population is dwindling away, so there's no new audiences to attract. Old Hollywood names like Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, or Clint Eastwood, still have more drawing power than probably any more recent (like... 2010-) Hollywood stars in the market.

Eternals didn't outgross Black Widow, Shang Chi, and many other MCU films (both Guardians, all the Thor's, two Captain America's, etc.) because it was "alluring." It was able to find (a little) more success than all those because Angelina Jolie, who has her own fans from her long successful track record in the market and is recognizable to older audiences, was in it.

I realised a fact later that Titanic 1st Week was ¥510M, even Spirited Away couldn't defeated Titanic in Multipler (30x vs 53x) It ranked 1st for 18 weeks, dropped once for a week, then again ranked 1st for another 7 weeks, ranking 1st for a total of 25 weeks. It stayed in TOP 10 for more than 50 weeks. Took 82/170 days to reach ¥10B/¥20B respectively for a cumulative total of ¥26.7B. I always thought that Spirited Away had the biggest multiples but no it was James Cameron's Titanic.

BTW, how does Avatar 2 looks to you? Can it outgross Original, I meant Avatar (2009)

Well, Spirited Away did have the second(?) biggest opening weekend of all-time when it debuted. And it broke the OW record for a Japanese film (Princess Mononoke) at the time by 50%. It started out of the gate just about as high as imaginable at the time, yet still got a multiplier over 30.

Bohemian Rhapsody and Frozen, among the ¥10 billion+ films, achieved a higher multiplier than Spirited Away, by the way.

Do you have a source for Titanic's OW you shared? It's a figure I've searched for many times over the years, but never found.

Not really expecting *too* much from Avatar 2. Sequels to major performers almost always drop-off, so a decline is pretty likely. Only two sequels have ever grossed over ¥15 billion. Original films are much more likely to get that high as they have more potential to reach a broader, more casual (non-moviegoing) audience that is required to get there, whereas sequels are more limited in their appeal and subject to audience loss.

It probably still has ¥10 billion potential, but I wouldn't go much higher.

The sources are taken from Eiga.com. I wrote the final box office wrong. It's ¥26.2B, while distribution rentals is at ¥16B. 3D release is ¥479,790,000

It seems there is some contradicting information. Variety article from back in 1998 says Titanic was #1 for 22 consecutive weeks.

Not sure, but I would guess either the data is fuzzy, or one refers to revenue and the other refers to admissions (since both are important for Japan)

Variety would be revenue (so 22 weeks at #1 in revenue), while Eiga (and all local sources) provide weekend rankings by admissions sold.

Eiga only has weekend data going back to August 1998 though. Titanic was still in the Top 10 at this time (week 36 when Eiga began their reporting), thankfully, so got to track it from that point onward. However, its opening weekend isn't included in any of the weekend reports. It might be somewhere out there in a old news article, but I've never come across it after some extensive researching over the years.

Not saying it isn't out there, just that it hasn't turned up...yet. Some older articles from the 90s are no longer available though, so the longer we go without finding it, the less likely it becomes.

And ¥510 million sounds reasonable, by the way, and might very well be the number. That would have been very good at the time. Few OWs are known before 2000 (and especially 1998), but the OW record at the time (and until Star Wars: Episode I) was Princess Mononoke with ¥740 or 750 million (off the top of my head, forget the exact figure). So ¥510 million would have been a strong opening.

I've honestly had a feeling that Avatar 2 will disappoint for a while, but at the same time, betting against Cameron at the BO seems foolish at this point.

Even, at looking how upsetting Hollywood Movie (overall all those imported works) are doing does makes sense that Avatar 2 could do be the 1st Hollywood film to reach ¥10B since last one (what was the most recent Hollywood that reached ¥10B, I think Star Wars: 2019, was the last Imported Film to pass ¥5B) Decades back in 1990s (as notable) make film that are successful run for years. Does present timetable support that long runs with out digitals &disc release does make me tense? Cameron is already at different level, Titanic at ¥26.2B &Avatar at ¥15.6B, ranking 3rd &11th respectively.

Well, my point is Avatar has dropped more than ¥10B in compare to Titanic (even, the harshest point is the difference in time). Will every JC fans survive until his Avatar's Franchise complete? More harshest point is that will Avatar be the only franchise in the world to have each film successful passing $2B worldwide..... For Japan, will it drop like Frozen II (in compare to Frozen) bigger OW than Original but ½ of it's final? Or will it double the amount with it's anticipation? Only Titanic was the only film to break Princess Mononoke (all-time Highest Grossing Film in Japan) record at that time in a recorded 5 months, while it took Japanese Film, whole round figure of 15 years to take back that record from E.T. It took 20 years to jump from ¥30B - ¥40B, market is so stable that people here can not expect a break out even when Overseas market are going hell-high.

My actual point of view is that when I watched Titanic, I was robbed of all my fantasy, I couldn't find any new taste in Hollywood. My friends made me suffer by forcing me to watch Star Wars, I couldn't even like it either. I hate myself when I watched Avatar. I cried a no of times, that why I watched Avatar, when Cameron could not promise me a accurate release date for Avatar 2. I have no taste in Hollywood other than his directorial films. I am lost forever.

Perfect! You've contributed a lot to this thread since joining, but providing Titanic's opening weekend might be the biggest single contribution of all! Thank you!

Titanic can now finally have a concrete number on the all-time best multipliers list.

Indeed. I meant to update it last week when the 2021 Yearly Data was posted (two films from 2021 made it on the list--one quite high), but it worked out better by waiting.

Also, I WILL update the first post of this thread soon! Promise. Give me a week or two. I haven't forgotten (those that have PMed me).

Good to see. Should be able to increase this weekend, even if its admissions would see a slight drop or remain flat (though an increase there is also likely, I think), due to the higher avg. ticket price it'll have from the 4DX/MX4D, and Dolby Cinema, showings.

I haven't checked the local news in a day or two, but has anyone spotted the ¥10 billion announcement they'd like to share? It should have gotten there on Thursday, so an announcement today (Friday) should be either out or coming soon.

They haven't announced 10billion yet I think, even the official account for it doesn't mention anything. Looking at its dailies thursday may have cut it close and only got there very early today so perhaps tomorrow it'll be announced? Idk.

They may just be waiting for the weekend announcement then since it'd be seen by more people than a Friday (well, now Saturday) announcement.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is up ~50/55% in admissions thanks to its 4DX/MX4D, Dolby Cinema expansion, and third giveaway promotion. In revenue, due to the higher ticket prices for the new premium showings, it's possibly looking at a ~60/65% jump in revenue in its sixth weekend. Should be around ¥10.5 billion (~$94/95 million) now.

Reasonable enough ~35/40% hold for Spider-Man. Keeps it on track for a little over a ¥4 billion finish.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife basically bombed in its debut. 5th place start. I'd say surprising, but it's just not anymore.

I think spidey's drop will be worse in gross since it lost all its 4d and almost all its dolby screens to JJK0 though.
