Anyways, 29M admits were done on Wednesday. Since Corpse wasn't here that was missed.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning, part two of the finale, had a good start on Friday, earning around ¥175 million ($1.6 million) with 115,000 admissions or so I'd estimate.

And in second place was part one of the finale, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final, that's been holding extraordinarily well for over a month now. This weekend, to my knowledge, is the first time that a two-part film has occupied the #1 and #2 spots at the box-office. Typically part one films of a finale have slipped off a bit by now (hovering around the bottom of the top 10) over the 6-8 week period between them in the market, but with theaters closed in Tokyo/Osaka (among others) during part one's first 6 weeks, its business has been stretched out and it's still performing very well.

This weekend (and any future days) also sets up a unique opportunity for moviegoers to plan a double-feature for themselves by seeing both parts of the finale in theaters on the same day (or weekend) since part one is still playing very wide.

Also, since theaters have been reopened in the affected prefectures since Tuesday (though under capacity restrictions), most films have seen nice increases versus last week, or at the very least have been holding very well all week. We could see some very strong holds, and potential increases, for many films this weekend. And with a lot of films opening this weekend (4 wide, 10 limited), expect to see a lot of new films in the Top 10 this weekend.

Great insight, Corpse. Anything on weekend numbers for Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning?

I'm expecting it to come in possibly below part one, but only because fans and general moviegoers are still going out to see part one in respectable numbers (it was #1 last weekend, and will be #2 this weekend still). However, this is the first weekend since April where theaters are open in Tokyo/Osaka (among others), so it could still have a comparable, or even bigger, opening weekend.

Either way, over/under part one, it's probably going to be pretty leggy due to some fans just recently having an opportunity (without having to travel outside their prefectures) to see part one first. And some could be planning a double-feature by seeing both films over the weekend, too.

As mentioned, part one's business was hit almost immediately (day 3 of release) by the SOEs back in April, which has caused its business to be more spread out over a longer period of time (its holds have been remarkable for several weeks now) than usual as people in the affected prefectures either had to travel to a nearby prefecture to see it, or just decided to wait until theaters reopened in their prefectures instead (which happened this past Tuesday). So once those people see part one, presumably the vast majority will also come out and see part two very soon as well.

Surprise! First Weekend Estimates in awhile. A lot of good numbers here this weekend. And note that these are likely rougher estimates than normal since we'll need to see how the usual locations is now behaving with theaters reopened again in Tokyo/Osaka (among others), but under capacity restrictions.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning debuted atop the box office, although came in a decent bit below part one of the finale. I believe this is still a good opening though, because as you can see, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final is still doing very well (either in 2nd or 3rd place), meaning a good amount of fans/moviegoers haven't had the opportunity to see it in theaters yet, so wouldn't be so quick to see part two yet. This is because part one opened right as the SOEs began back in April, so its audience has been slow to come out as a result of them.

So over the course of the next several weeks, I expect part two to have excellent legs as everyone who now has the chance to see part one with theaters being reopened will gradually make their way to theaters to see part two. Also, potential historic feat here: If part one edges out Detective Conan for second place with actuals tomorrow, I'm 99.9% certain this will be the first time ever that both parts of a finale have occupied the top 2 spots at the weekend box office.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet enjoyed a nice increase with theaters reopened in Tokyo/Osaka (among others), so it'll likely be seeing a nice boost to its total over the next couple weeks, especially if Toho does something special for it in those prefectures (such as rescheduling the postponed stage greeting it had). I expect to see this one hanging around much longer than the typical Detective Conan film, so don't think it's really close to finishing up anytime soon.

And lastly, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is quickly falling down the charts now, coming in 17th or 18th place this weekend. However, it did manage to remain roughly flat versus last weekend. Given how far it's fallen, I don't think we'll get a weekend actual for it this weekend. And, I expect it'll fall outside the Top 25 in two weeks after it's released on home video, which will more or less conclude its run. It'll still be playing in some theaters I'm sure, but they'll be adding pretty miniscule amounts to its total from that point forward. So, whatever the total is as of June 20th will be almost (like 99.5%+) its final total. I think it's final total will be reported at ¥40.2 billion (~$384 million) later in the year.

And a couple sad stats for Disney in the market (at least theatrically) now on both their animation and live-action fronts in recent months:

Cruella will be, by far, their worst performing live-action remake/reimagining release. Looks like it'll take a full three weeks just to match the opening weekends of Maleficent 2 and Dumbo (the two prior worst performers). And I can't think of any live-action film from Disney since at least 2000 that is either based on, or inspired by, some past work or property that Cruella will outgross. Disney has had their fair share of live-action bombs in the past for sure, many failing to reach just ¥1 billion, but I can't think of any that didn't even reach ¥500 million (or possibly even as low as ¥350 million or so).

Raya and the Last Dragon was their worst performing animated film since some unknown time before 1990.

I imagine Black Widow will follow this pattern by either becoming the worst performing MCU film ever, or barely scrapping by the two lowest films (The Incredible Hulk and Captain America: The First Avenger). Luckily for it, beating The Incredible Hulk to avoid this distinction *should* be just about guaranteed.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning debuted atop the box office, selling 247,600 admissions over the weekend frame across 449 screens, and 350,199 admissions over its first three-days in release. This is about 30% less than The Final, but if you've read many of my last posts, it's very likely due to a high number of fans who haven't had the opportunity to see part one yet due to the SOEs that affected most of its run over its first six weeks. If The Beginning displays strong legs early on, we can likely determine this to be the case.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final held onto second place with another crazy strong hold that's become the norm for it in recent weeks, and in doing so, marks the first time ever that both parts of a two-part finale have occupied the Top 2 spots at the weekend box-office! Despite the SOEs affecting it almost immediately out of the gate (day 3) and over its first six weeks in release, it has displayed very good legs and is probably going to finish around ¥4 billion ($36 million or so).

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet enjoyed a nice increase to round out the Top 3, a much needed increase it's been waiting for as theaters in Tokyo/Osaka (among others) have reopened (though under capacity restrictions). It looked like it may have finished just slightly above ¥7 billion, but I expect it'll have a pretty long run now with theaters reopened and summer vacation a little over a month away. We'll need to see how it performs in the next few weeks, but this weekend is a good sign that it could be targeting ¥7.5 billion (about $70 million) or more.

Kakegurui: Desperate Russian Roulette's weekend figure remains an estimate, and I didn't realize it actually opened on Tuesday as soon as theaters reopened in Tokyo/Osaka (among others), so its cumulative total above is a 6-day total, and it's sold 88,194 admissions since then.

Fate/Grand Order: Paladin; Agateram experienced a massive increase, either due to theaters reopening in Tokyo/Osaka (where a film like this makes the vast majority of its sales) or Aniplex giving it a event over the weekend with theaters reopened now. Or perhaps it was a result of both. Either way, it was enough to keep it in the Top 10 for another week.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train dropped to either 14th or 15th place, depending on the weekend actual for the 2gether movie. Its 34 week admissions have reached 29,019,995. Unless there's an interest among the most diehard of fans to check it out in theaters ahead of the home video release on June 16th (so close now!), this will probably be its last weekend that's tracked.

Sad that Conan will not beat Evangelion. I thought it had good chance after its opening but the restrictions really cut short its legs.

Not quite, but it's down to 110 theaters (mostly Aeon theaters) starting today with just one showing per location, losing about 2/3rds of its theaters, and more are scheduled to drop it June 17th. So, its run is certainly near its end and will basically be over next week.

The home video release is just days away now (June 16th), which takes the vast majority of business away from theaters, so it's pretty common for theaters to begin dropping films (if they're still playing) just before and right after the home video release. Home video releases effectively end a film's theatrical run in the market since ownership is still very prominent in Japan, and piracy is almost non-existent in the market. A lot more to be gained (~3x more excluding all the special edition prices which can be 5x+ more) from selling a Blu-ray/DVD than a movie ticket.

I'm expecting the home video release's first week in sales (revenue) to possibly beat its first weekend at the box office (the all-time record by a huge margin). The home video market is just another territory for it to try to conquer after the manga/book industry and box office.

I also saw that despite the near end of its run, the Demon Slayer event with stage greetings and gifts is still on the cards. Even if it won't bring in much, it will maybe bring it closer to ¥40.2Bn before the end.

Yeah, they're just on a much smaller scale and very limited.

There will be five stage greeting showings in total (each with a different cast member), with one happening each week in July (week 2 has two). The audience will be determined by lottery. So they'll add something like 2,500 more admissions and maybe ¥6/7 million (~$55,000-65,000) or so depending on the ticket prices, assuming each venue has around 500 seats without capacity restrictions still in place by then.

Based on the 2-day (¥3.35bn) or 3-day (¥4.62bn) totals? With the release coming up soon I've looked a bit into where things stand so far. (Time for an overly long post that will be moot once the real data is out in a week and a half lol)

The biggest factor is the edition split. Impossible to perfectly predict of course, though on the sales estimation website pripri.xyz (which extrapolates to the overall market based on Amazon rankings), it's very heavily leaning towards the regular edition, which makes sense for a mass-appeal film, especially given the much lower price.

The percentage for each version in pripri's estimate is:
71.8% - regular edition (¥4,000/3,500 MSRP w/o tax)
22.4% - limited edition (¥9,000/8,000)
5.9% - limited store exclusive (¥11,700/10,700)

Some other store exclusives are a couple hundred yen less, but it it's all about the same. Also, it should go without saying that pripri's estimates could be wrong (i.e. Amazon may not be representative of the overall market), though they tend to be within a ballpark or two. But an atypical release like this does complicate matters, for various reasons.

One minor issue is in how Oricon may report the data. Typically the entries on their weekly lists correspond to entries in their database, but the latter has no listing for the store exclusives. I don't think this means the exclusives will go unreported; they'll almost definitely be reported as part of the non-exclusive ¥9000 BD/¥8000 DVD LE. Usually this isn't a problem because most store exclusives have the same MSRP as the non-exclusive LE anyway. Kimetsu is pretty unusual in having higher priced exclusives. That said, we're talking about missing ~25% of the MSRP of a few percentage points of the total sales. Not a big deal. So they're being treated as the ¥9/8k LEs for my purposes.

Next is the DVD/BD split. The TV series' split was 42/58% DVD/BD. A mainstream film will probably be closer, and indeed the pripri estimates show 45/55% (though even 50/50 wouldn't shock me).

All told, if we take pripri's current splits it would need something like:
¥3.35bn = 61k BD LE + 324k BD RE + 49k DVD LE + 316k DVD RE = 751k total week 1
¥4.62bn = 85k BD LE + 448k BD RE + 68k DVD LE + 435k DVD RE = 1,036k total week 1

If the LEs get more than the ~30% estimated share (very possible), lower numbers would do the trick. As for how feasible either number is, we'll know soon enough!

(One last thing to look out for is whether Aniplex puts out a press release reporting official shipment numbers. If so, that's the more meaningful number versus anything Oricon puts out, the latter of which will always be incomplete. But we can't compare the official shipment numbers for one release to Oricon numbers for another, and official numbers are almost never released, so Oricon data always gets used when comparing releases to each other.)

I'm setting its over/under at 1 million copies in its first week, which as your numbers show, can get it above its opening weekend (either 2-day or 3-day) at the box office in revenue.

Personally, given what it's done across every other medium, I think it's going to go comfortably above that mark and challenge Frozen's first week. But I don't want to overpredict anything. 2021's home video market is a lot different than 2014's, so it's of course something to consider.

The fanbase is so large though, I think they alone will push it well beyond 500,000. Factor in a certain number of the fanbase that's likely to buy more than one copy (multiple versions being released), it could go significantly higher. And since it achieved mainstream success too (which is a massive understatement, to say the least here), there is a lot of potential for the casual audiences to pick it up for a wide variety of reasons (for themselves, their children, gifts for friends or other relatives, just to own the biggest film ever, etc.).

It's sort of the perfect storm of having the big fanbase appeal like a late-night or just popular anime series (on steroids), AND and the major mainstream appeal like a Hayao Miyazaki film. If Demon Slayer does fail to challenge/break a lot of home video records, I think we can safely assume all the current records are likely to hold forever (not an exaggeration).

I'd say first target for Jjk movie should be blockbuster milestone of ¥5b and based on opening move it accordingly. Not many anime adaptations reach 10b mark in the market.

I say we compare JJK movie to BnHA since they are around the same level of Popularity.
But of course, being a canon movie, it would be higher than BnHA movie gross.
So around 3 billion I guess. But it could easily be 5 billion because of the Holiday benifits it would get.

It should be at least higher than the current Evangelion movie 8.5B ?
