Do you think Belle can stay in top 10 for another week or 2 or do you think this was the last week for it?

Highly depends on MX4D release from 10/22. But, I think it will be out this weekend because of Dune

There are 6 wide openers, 3 of which are very wide (300+ theaters), next weekend. Dune isn't even the widest. So Belle is definitely falling out of the Top 10 next weekend, and I doubt the 4DX expansion gets it back in there in two weeks with 3 more wide openers that weekend, unless there are a lot of Hosoda fans (probably up to 50,000) who are willing to pay extra to see it again 15 weeks later.

The expansion should have happened back in September during Silver Week.

But again, I could be misjudging Hosoda's fanbase. Maybe there are tens of/hundreds of thousands of diehard fans willing to come back out almost 4 months later to pay a premium to see it again.

>No Time to Die's repeated atop the box office, improving a little bit over yesterday's estimate. Good hold, 3% higher than Spectre's second weekend, but 10% bigger drop. It's ¥211 million behind its predecessor's two-week total though, and being an October release, it'll probably continue to fall behind, or at the very least, won't be able to catch up. This may sound bad, but it's not, really. It just means that it's probably not going to match/outgross Spectre to become the highest grossing Daniel Craig 007 film. But it still has a fair shot at coming in around Skyfall's total, so expect a finish around ¥2.5 billion ($22/23 million) or a little more.

>Masquerade Night delivered a good hold, keeping its chances at reaching ¥4 billion ($35 million+) alive. But will need to deliver a few better holds in the next two weeks to get there. Either way, it's going to outgross My Hero Academia and likely F9: The Fast Saga to become the 7th Biggest Film of 2021, unless a big breakout occurs in the next month or so. Admissions exceeded 2 million after four weeks in release.

>Laws of the Universe: The Age of Elohim came in MUCH higher than estimated, and not only opened higher than 2019's film, but also managed to match almost exactly (¥166.6 million vs 166.7 million) the opening weekend of 2018's film. Age of Elohim sold an impressive 134,653 admissions over the weekend frame on 225 screens, setting a new franchise record by beating 2018's release by 564(!) admissions!

>Wrath of Man is currently estimated for the weekend, and I only have it above Macross since it came in 5th place over the weekend in admissions. But chances are Macross had sky-high ticket prices and likely opened in 5th place instead in revenue. Wrath of Man did sell 62,162 admissions in its first three-days in release though on 210 screens, and its three-day total is available above.

>Macross Δ Movie: Absolute Live!!!!!! debuted in 6th place in admissions over the weekend, but its gross is estimated as no figures have been released. I was going to include it in yesterday's Weekend Estimates, but most Live! broadcasts are excluded from box office rankings. But I think this is an actual film, not a concert or performance. I don't expect we'll get numbers from it, but if they're released, I'll let everyone know.

>Free! The Final Stroke - Part 1 continues to hold very well, and is going to break the ¥500 million mark this week. It's now the second highest grossing Free! film, and may come a lot closer, or perhaps even challenge, Free! High Speed! (¥691 million) to become the highest grossing film in the franchise. Nice win here for Kyoto Animation.

>Dakaichi: I’m Being Harassed by the Sexiest Man of the Year - Spain Arc is the first BL (Boys-Love) film that I could find to ever debut in the Top 10, selling 24,695 admissions over the weekend on just 62 screens. Pretty big accomplishment for Dakaichi and BL films in general. Someone correct me if I forgot a past BL film that managed to crack the Top 10 (or mention one so I can go back and check).

>Kaguya-sama: Love is War Final fell out of the Top 10 (14th this weekend), and is nearing the end of its run but not before it managed to exceed the ¥1 billion milestone!

By BL, do you mean any gay Japanese film? Recently, there have been The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese and Ossan’s Love?

Thank you. And yeah, BL can be live-action or animated.

The Ossan's Love movie was indeed very successful (grossing ¥2.65 billion), by far the most successful BL film in the market. The success of the TV drama helped it breakout into the mainstream.

The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese did well too, grossing around ¥620 million. Obviously much less than Ossan's Love, but still quite impressive for the BL genre.

Dakaichi won't match either of them, of course, but I do think it's the first animated BL film to crack the Top 10.

I'm keeping expectations a bit low, or at least "conservative." I wish it was coming out in a few months instead, maybe January or February. I'm expecting something around ¥250/300 million ($2.5/3 million) this weekend, and a total around ¥1.5-2 billion ($15/20 million). This result would be pretty decent, I think.

Western releases have been really struggling for the past two years. Even if you ignore Disney not having 1 successful film in 2 years (and none on the horizon until at least mid-2022), most other western films aren't performing very well either. One of the biggest reasons I think that a lot of imported films are struggling is because they're opening either day-and-date with the U.S. and other territories, or very close to them. This is unusual for the market, with Japan often being one of the last (if not the last) market to get them for important reasons.

Opening day-and-date with the U.S. and however many other markets is typically a hinderance in Japan, and not advised. Many imported films do better when they're released 2-4 months later since it gives audiences more time to learn about the film, and allows the marketing in the country to be sort of catered to audiences here. And if they're well-received overseas first, it helps garner more interest in Japan as well if the release is delayed. Japanese audiences rarely go into a film without knowing a good deal about them first.

Day-and-date releases normally only succeed when they're apart of a well-known and established franchise that audiences already either have interest in, or at the very least know something about.

F9: The Fast Saga (which itself even opened 6 weeks after the U.S. in Japan despite being a franchise film) is going to be the only non-Japanese film in 2021's Top 10 Grossing Films (looking at 8th place). And they'll only be 3 imported films (F9, 007, Godzilla vs Kong) even in the Top 20 this year unless a breakout occurs. And note: These 3 films were released by Toho or Toho-Towa in Japan. Japanese films are doing very well. Imported films (and internional distributors)... not so much right now.

1 billion yen total ? Or Opening Weekend ?

Sorry, I was talking about the total. I have not see Blade Runner 2049, so I don't know the exact what will be the total. As, Corpse says Western Release are struggling in last two years. Geniuely, speaking no idea how it gonna perform. Everything just depends on Opening Weekend.

BL films have had a relatively longer history at the Japanese box office. One of the genre’s best and most successful directors, Ryosuke Hashiguchi, has been making films since the 80s. Here’s his 1993 film A Touch of Fever:

The film was a commercial success, surprising given its subject matter. It was nothing less than a breakthrough for real life gay-oriented films in Japan, as well as Okoge (1992) and Kira kira Hikaru (also known as Twinkle) in 1992.

One of my favorite BL films is La Maison de Himiko. Would there happen to be any box office data for it?

I spent a bit of time looking up data for it, but came up with nothing. It didn't debut in the Top 10 when it opened (August 27th, 2005), and I checked each weekend for the rest of 2005 but it wasn't there. And it's not included in Eiren's 2005 data, so it grossed under ¥1 billion. Also, since it didn't appear in the Top 10 at any point, it's probably safe to assume the gross was significantly below ¥1 billion.

Finishing up the 1-Year Anniversary Demon Slayer post(s) today. Tomorrow (Japan) marks the one year anniversary when it opened in theaters, so I've updated/put together some posts to celebrate it.

Do you guys want these posted here later today (technically the weekend it opened in Japan now), or just wait until tomorrow?

One of these includes the "Record of Slayed Records" (last count was closing in on 200 strong) that I managed for about the first 5/6 months (now fully updated), but note, especially to any new members that have joined (or are lurking) in the past 6 months or so:

Demon Slayer wasn't just a record breaking film. It broke records, and then it broke them again, and then again. For example, its opening weekend, second weekend, AND third weekend were ALL bigger than the previous opening weekend record that The Matrix Reloaded held for 17 years. From day one, it broke and now holds every single "biggest/highest grossing" cumulative total record as well.

There are several records where Demon Slayer's first THREE weeks (be it the weekends or individual days) in release were higher than any numbers that any film ever put up in their first weeks. The list can sometimes look a little confusing when it says "Biggest Weekend Ever", "Second Biggest Weekend Ever", etc. When you see somewhat contradictory records like this (how can it be the Biggest and Second Biggest?), it means that it broke those records and holds the First AND Second (or Third, etc.) spots on those lists. (E.g. Demon Slayer's third weekend was big enough to break the old OPENING weekend record.)

Hope that clears that up.

How much can they add ¥10M or ¥2-3M in limited time?

It's a busy theater, one of the top 10 busiest locations in the country.

I guess it just depends on how limited the run is. I'm guessing two-weeks. They're starting on November 19th, so a two-week run before the bigger December releases seems right.

But note: This is just ONE theater, so don't expect anything crazy. Both films also aired in IMAX Laser at other locations during their runs, so no incentive for any diehards to seek them out to view them in a "new" format again. Some diehard fans will obviously still turn up, but I wouldn't expect many outside of the Hyogo prefecture area. Maybe something around ¥5/10 million like you mentioned. We'll see.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Daily Performance
Next, here is the Daily Performance Tracker for the film.

Note: The film wasn't being tracked between 06/11-07/22. It entered limited release on June 11th (just ahead of its DVD release), and was well outside the Top 25 films to even provide an estimate. And to those in the unknown, the film received its Final Week expansion on July 23rd through July 29th.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer 1-Year Anniversary Day
Working on finalizing the Records List, and I just want to reiterate once again: There are many records that it broke, and then broke again (and again), or had other days that broke the original records OR had other days that broke its own record. When you see Biggest, Second Biggest, Third Biggest and so on, that means it holds the record for Biggest X Record, along with the Second, Third, etc. place positions behind that.

It's only ranking behind ITSELF and above everything else in these instances.

I listed one example yesterday, but another example is that it broke the Biggest Single-Day Record (twice, once over the original record and then beat itself), and went on to acquire the Biggest 7 Single-Days behind that to hold the entire Top 8 of the Biggest Single-Days ever.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
And here we go! 190 strong (at least) when including records it broke more than once, or ranked only behind itself, breaking the previous film records.

A massive list of records, and there's of course going to be other records it broke or set that aren't as trackable. The film completely decimated the record books. You could say it IS the record book now.

Stated this many times during its run, and while Japan is a "never say never" market, SO many of these are likely to hold for a really, REALLY, long time, if not forever, unless the population crisis gets under control in the coming decades.

This also excludes Weekly Records. And it holds A LOT of them.

I may add them in the future, but it's a good bit of work outside of the obvious or likely ones in its first 3/4 months and some later ones in its 7th-9th months. I'm thinking something like 15 or more Weekly Records. Of its first 12 weeks, I think it holds 9 or 10 of them. And then it holds many later in its run throughout its mid-20ths to early-30th weekends. And it holds the biggest 41st weekly record, too, and is the only known film to rank inside the Top 10 in its 41st weekend of release.
