Huge second weekend for DC25. It's either just shy of the franchise record, or might have taken it.

Here are the comparisons via mimorin (including independant theatres) for the first three days of each film:

Using the same average ticket price for Friday and the weekend that I previously calculated for the First Part, I'd estimate that the weekend earned ~93,916,000 yen with a 3 day total of ~150,861,000 yen or so.

I will caution that the usual locations have been accounting for a much larger share of nationwide ticket sales, or rural locations have been accounting for a much lower share of nationwide ticket sales, or it's been some combination of both for the past 6 months or so (especially in 2022 proper).

This doesn't impact smaller releases like Free! The Final Stroke as much, but it's just something to consider in case those gains above wind up being smaller than expected.

It's close but defeated by ¥8M (¥894M) Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 enter TOP 15 (¥13.5B). Shin Chan 2022 had a great improvement by at least ¥43M from prev. film. I was worried when OD was some 50% behind the former. Well, weekend perform well. FB3 also had a great hold ¥332M / ¥2.77B

Yeah, great weekend all-around!

Detective Conan 25 breaks the franchise second weekend record (Biggest Second Weekends updated above) and continues to track ahead of the highest grossing film in the franchise (DC23) after two weeks in release. Don't want to guarantee anything yet, but it's looking likely that it'll become the highest grossing film in the franchise if GW delivers.

Fantastic Beasts 3 continues to hold well, and so long as it delivers over Golden Week, looks set to become Hollywood's biggest film since 2019 and perhaps their first blockbuster since then, too.

Crayon Shin-chan 30 delivers one of the better openings in the franchise in quite some time, I believe. And Kanroji, its Friday was only weaker than last year's film because last year's film was delayed from its annual April spot to July due to COVID (weekdays are much stronger from mid-July to the end of August).

Sing 2 and The Last 10 Years are edging closer to ¥3 billion, and with Golden Week coming up soon, both should get there.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 entered that 4-way tie as the 15th Highest Grossing Film Ever, which it'll break and be the sole film in that spot.

Thanks for sharing Free!'s three day figure! I was just about to post the Weekend Actuals and 2022 Charts when you did. Its weekend will still be estimated, but it appears to have come in above ¥100 million based on that 3-day there. Its admissions will be estimated based on the last film.

It's annoying that numbers (and lack of admissions, I believe) for this series, and other "smaller" releases like it aren't reported normally, especially when they do respectable numbers!

Monday is the only "normal" day this Golden Week holiday period this year. It'll be the weakest day of the period, but should still perform above average. Every other day of the period will essentially be as strong as a Saturday or Sunday. I'll post daily estimates for the holiday period.

Golden Week 2022 should be quite strong as all four national holidays fall on weekdays this year, which makes both the weekdays strong (obviously) as well as keeping the weekend strong as normal (and the 1st is Sunday, so it's a pseudo-holiday itself!). The date-arrangement is very ideal for the box-office this year. It'll mostly be holdover dominate (Conan, Fantastic Beasts, Crayon Shin-chan), although there is Radiation House: The Movie (based on the Fuji TV drama) and the live-action xxxHolic movie opening on the 29th. Radiation House is one to watch being a Toho release, but it will probably be limited to its TV audience (however... there isn't much this GW for adults, so it might branch out). xxxHolic should almost exclusively appeal to the anime/manga base, so I don't expect too much from it.

Dr. Strange 2 is also opening, but not until May 4th, so it's largely missing the holiday period. It's opening on perhaps the biggest day of the entire holiday period, so that's good, but it's missing a lot and will probably be really, really frontloaded by going from two holidays to nothing the rest of its run. Disney should have just released it on April 29th. They know by now, surely, that piracy is almost non-existent in Japan, if that was a concern. Sony's done it in the past, to great results, with Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, releasing them at the beginning of GW. Others have too, but these are two notable examples.

Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween is currently tracking ahead of Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire after two weeks (+2%), so will it outgross it and make a run at the ¥10 billion (uber-blockbuster) milestone to become the first film in the franchise and the first animated release in April to reach it?

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is possibly going to crack the list, too, as it appears on track to get really close to / a bit over ¥5 billion. We'll probably know for certain when Golden Week concludes.

Indeed. There were some 2010 releases that took advantage of when the exchange rate started to become really favorable (like Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3, Arriety), but it's a shame nothing released in 2011/2012 managed to reach ¥10 billion when the rate became REALLY favorable (only one film even got to ¥9 billion those years!).

But now the exchange rate is the worst it's been in 21/22 years, and seems likely to reach 1990s levels. USD totals are going to suck for years. This doesn't matter to local films, but it definitely hurts Hollywood. ¥5 billion is only $38 million, and ¥10 billion is only $76 million now... ¥10 billion was $120/$130 million 10 years ago (~$50 million MORE than now...), and $90/100 million over most of the last 4-5 years.

The JPY has declined 14% versus the USD in just two months... Recovering from a 20+ year low (maybe even 25+ year low since it keeps declining as the dollar skyrockets) is going to take forever (likely several years) to bounce back.

Golden Week began with a bang today! Friday's (Showa Day) numbers are exceptional. I'll post some estimates here later.

Important to remember that during the three major holiday periods of the year (New Year, Golden Week, and Obon Festival), that the individual weekdays can be about as strong / stronger than Saturday or Sunday themselves. And the weekdays as a set can be 2-3x greater than the weekend, and this year will certainly be on the high end of that range, or maybe greater, since all four of Golden Week's national holidays fall on weekdays (Friday this week, and Tuesday-Thursday next week).
